Just listen to one of the broadcasts. If you're new to chess the analysis is probably going to be hard to follow, but it's still the best way to get a sense of what's going on.
On a purely personal note, I'd like to show Yellow the beauty of infinitely repeating Starcraft 2 bunkers. -Boxer

At this point, beating Carlsen is like beating a human with computer-like abilities, so I'd be very impressed with Anand if he could actually pull this off =)

So I'm completely new to this watching competitive chess thing, and I poked around a bit. Is there actually going to be video of this event? Are the broadcasts pretty polished with showing the board and commentators and such? Will there be VODs available since I'm in the EST timezone and probably won't wake up for it with all the BlizzCon watching I need to do this weekend? I am not that good at chess but I like it, and this match has me intrigued.

Thank you in advance for answering all my noob questions.

There's also going to be an official stream which I assume will show live video, shots of the players, etc., but the casting team seems to be made up of 2 IMs and a GM I've never heard of. That doesn't mean that it has to be bad, but it's a little odd. The candidates tournament for instance had Nigel Short on the official live stream, a very strong and famous GM.

Both Lawrence Trent (IM) and Susan Polgar (GM) have confirmed on their official pages/twitters that they will be commentating :-)

It doesn't work that way. Each player usually only has 5-10 people helping him, and rarely will those people be top GMs, because the top GMs have their own tournaments to worry about.

The chance is about 0. Since chess is a game of perfect information and has no mechanics, there is really no excuse for anybody but a novice to fall for a scholar's mate.

This should be fun to watch! I haven't played much chess for years but I used to play pretty seriously. I closely followed the 1995 match between Kasparov and Anand very closely. It was epic to see Kasparov bring out the Sicilian Dragon. I played the opening for years after that just because of that match (with notably less success than Kasparov, unfortunately).

Thanks for the post, OP.

The highlight of Anand so far was against Kramnik in 2008 where Anand was in the form of his life.
The IM in the video mentions that Carlsen wouldn't have had a chance against the Anand of those days.
The critical position in this game is at 24min into the video.

you really should watch it live. Vods in chess (with commentary) is just extremly dull compared to watching it livestreamed.

Many people probably won't have the time to watch every game in real time.
There will be a lot of post-game analyses that wrap up the games into 30-60 min videos.
These videos will usually appear on the same day as the game on various channels.

Don't understand why the commentator would make such a silly statement.

I wouldn't be surprised if Anand can win against Carlsen though. I haven't seen Anand play for a while, but he has prepared extensively and if Carlsen has to play from a disadvantage after the opening he will have a hard time against Anand. I expect close and vicious games though.

Edit: In the video, I didn't get Kramnik's move 22. a3. It looks like a weak option to either move the king to keep cover and get out of the b2 rook's sight or play bxd7. Especially when coupled with 23. xc8

It's going to be very interesting, i think Anand can pull this off. Carlsen is absolutely impressive with his winning streak but really Anand isn't a 5 time WC for nothing.
They first ignore you. After they laugh at you. Next they will fight you. In the end you will win.

For the unlikely case that Anand is going to win this:
He would then have 6 World Championship titles and would have to be considered among the greatest in the history of chess.
