How do you refuse draws in chess? Do you give your opponent the finger when they offer to shake your hand or how?

If your opponent offers you a draw, the way to refuse it is by making a move. There are also technical ways to draw including stalemate, threefold repetition (repeating a position 3 times with the same person to move), and the game going 50 moves without a pawn move or piece capture.

If the position occurs 3 times on the board you can draw by force by calling 3fold repetition as was the case here.

This wasnt just a normal draw right but because of repetition. So i assume the only way to avoid the draw would have been for Carlson to make a different move which would have been disadvantaged.

I was expecting them to play in a convention in the center of everyone ( eg: WWE) and have a referee standing beside.

Carlsen opened poorly and Anand forced a quick draw.

So do the players decide how many games they will play on any given day?

No, it's one game per day and a few rest days in between. Schedule is in the op.

Anand played very cool and collected - he understand how to undermine the Reti with sharp quick play immediately after development. It ended up betraying Magnus' expectations and was unable to utilize his advantageous strength and talent in the midgame.

16 move draw???
what pussies

Carlsen has no choice really, his position was bad so he had to repeat the move and Anand playing any other move was meaning he will lose the forever advantageous play so he choose to repeat the moves.

you think i don't understand why it happened???
chose a fcking other line earlier to prevent this or just take a fcking chance with b5 or something!
there were so many other options before...
i don't get 11. c5 but hey, i'm not Carlsen.
at least Anand should have steared clear from a possible repetition on 12 ... Nd5 maybe with Ne4
he had the better position, why give the opportunity of a draw to the opponent?
if yo don't have something special planned than Nd5 practically forces the draw (which is btw a fine result in general with black, but come on!)

that's why I called him a pussy and Carlsen too for getting into a slightly worse position as white.

Ok thanks for the heads up.

Reading all the discussion in this thread over the past week has got me into trying to find out more about Chess. Like many here, I know the rules, but really only have a rudimentary idea of strategy. Interesting to follow, despite not being able to appreciate the subtleties of such a high level match.

What else can he play besides c5? He needs to do something about his pawn being attacked on c4. How is 12...Ne4 an improvement?

It's first game. Like Anand says they are just exchanging information in a sense. You don't want to risk losing shitton of money from the start just to entartain people.

I guess there is bit more on the line than just the money...
