And have we ever seen the best female chess players play against the best male players? Also, hoping for Carlsen to win here It's only partially divided. Women can play in any tournaments, but there are some tournaments exclusively for women. The reasoning is that chess has traditionally been a bastion of men and the vast majority of serious chess players are still men. By having some female-only tournaments (and special titles for women), the chess world hopes to draw more women to the game. As with tournaments though, all 'men' titles are open to women as well, so a woman can be WGM as well as GM. Unfortunately, women who can compete at the top level are still very rare. Judith Polgar was mentioned on the last page, she's the prime example, and you used to (she's put her career on hold somewhat) see her regularly compete in top events. Also if anyone tells you it's because men are better at spatial intelligence, ignore them. They're fucking dumb.

Judit Polgar, the best female chess player ever, never competed in a Women's World Championship, but qualified for the World Chess Championship 2005 (among 8 participants).
