A player who normally weren't even supposed to participate in candidates tourney became a world champ.

Ian will beat himself over a few mistakes he made...
In the first WC series he had only a small chance to win but here he had the chance of his life.

You might have misunderstood me.
I meant that Ding Liren only participated in the candidates because Karjakin was DQ-ed.
And then he go 2nd place and was able to play for the crown only when Magnus refused to play.
So you could say Ding Liren kinda got lucky twice in a row to end up in the battle for the crown.
I meant no disrepect to Liren whatsoever, he got a chance and used it in its fullest which is a sign of a clutch player.

What an amazing achievement for Liren

Really quite unexpected result, tbh! But what a brilliant last game of the rapid portion with black pieces by Liren.. wow!

A truly amazing World Chess Championship finishes with an awesome game. Fitting.

GGs WP both and Congratulations to Ding Liren on becoming the 17th World Chess Champion

Haha.. yeah, you're right that is a really crazy story, honestly. Somebody should do a documentary on it someday.

Thanks for the clarification

I felt like Ding Liren was so high ranked that even if he had a period of inactivity, he had a legitimate shot to play the candidate tourney even though he got in through special circumstances.

Hikaru was a bit further call. He also didn't disappoint result wise but having not play in a tournament for 3 years... Coming right back and rising 40 elo points? I was really surprised. Even if all those players are incredibly strong, I wonder how well Hikaru ranks in raw tactical power.

Poor Ian - winning candidates twice in a row and then losing the match to 2nd place...

H.Nakamura hated Gotham's success; his rants/outbursts on twitch were lame and funny at the same time.
And my fury stands ready. I bring all your plans to nought. My bleak heart beats steady. 'Tis you whom I have sought.

So they;ve buried the hatchet and all the toxicity and nonsense can go away.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-66647445

"Since June, both sides have negotiated privately in a good-faith effort to resolve their issues and allow the chess world to move forward without further litigation," Chess.com said in a statement on Monday.

"We are happy to share that all sides have reached an agreement."

It added that Mr Niemann was welcome to play at "any and all events... and will be treated no differently from any other player".

The platform said it stood by its report on Mr Niemann, "including that we found no determinative evidence that he has cheated in any in-person games".

Mr Carlsen, 32, said he acknowledged and understood the report, "including its statement that there is no determinative evidence" of wrongdoing by his rival.

He added that he was "willing to play Niemann in future events, should we be paired together".

Mr Niemann said that he was "pleased" that his lawsuit had been "resolved in a mutually acceptable manner" and that he looked forward "to competing against Magnus in chess rather than in court".

Why? It was the only way to close the case that was so absurd in the first place.

Magnus publicly destroyed niemanns reputation, niemann countersued him and now both are just fine no problem?

If i was innocent and niemann i would be fuming with anger

If both want to move forward, they need to act like adults and stop sueing, spitting etc...
Niemann destroyed his reputation by himself. It was his destroyed reputation that led to Magnus' baseless accusations.

I'm pretty sure neither are fine, they just realise there is no point to continue.

And yes, if Niemann didn't want to be accused of being a cheater then he shouldn't have been cheating.
