Makes sense from a Conservative view point due to they should get a large majority with Labour in the toilets. However the main reason i believe is due to how indecisive and poor the brexit talks internally are going and how all the MPs are just all over the place. Hoping for a nice easy Conservative win :D

Surely you would want to hold elections and get a new government in place before you start negotiations. And not waste several months going through a transition while the clock is ticking.

And what happens when if a pro-EU candidate wins? Where does that leave the negotiation?

Sounds like a mess all around.

what would a general election do to fix the internal stuff though? sure part of the reason she called it is to quell the criticism that she doesnt have a mandate to govern. and also this is pretty much a free win thanks to labour being in shambles

I can't see how anyone Pro EU could possibly win an election in the UK, we have a first past the post system with the conservatives around 45% of the vote Labour down on 25% you are looking at a 100-150 seat majority for the Conservatives and electoral wipe out for Labour

The internal stuff i mean as Conservatives win a few labour seats or something on those lines meaning that she gets her stuff voted through better? Or maybe she thinking that if they win they get to tell everyone WE LEAVING STOP BLOCKING STUFF. That was my thinking behind that, unless im wrong.

She basically said in her statement she was calling the election because all the other parties and the house of lords were blocking/delaying her, so she is calling the election to shut them up and stop blocking.

it's just clever political manoeuvring. many people voted brexit as a protest but regret it, and now there's no credible opposition which means the tories will have their mandate for a hard brexit and nobody can do anything about it

Yeah that is what i thought, so if they win another 40-100 seats according to poll data at the moment she will be laughing. I still don't get why this has to go to a general election for this to happen, bit of a shambles of a system.

I mean shambles due to that the government in charge is not able to pass the bills due to people blocking on purpose.

i think she is banking on labour voters who can't stand corbyn, and who accept the referendum result and just want the thing to go through smoothly so things can be business as usual

Well that's the end of Labour's little hard left movement then surely.

I think labour voters are either not going to vote at all or they will jump to a stupid vote like Lib Dems or Green Party xD which should again mean Conservatives clean up in the areas.

Should be an opportunity for the Lib Dems to get some seats. Just get the message out there that you're a moderate pro EU party and they should attract a good amount of votes with a decent leader.

Yeh the leader already did so;

Tim Farron said "For those who don't want a hard brexit and still want access to the single market should vote for Lib Dems, we will change.....blahblah"

Hoping for a leadership which takes the referendum vote more seriously rather than just trying to subvert it for as long as possible in the desperate hope that someone would change their mind.
History will sooner or later sweep the European Union away without mercy.

It will be the same leadership, but they will go from a majority of ~10 seats to a majority of ~100. Arch europhiles in the Tory party won't be able to block a clean Brexit any more, so it's a good thing. Tories currently polling 44% with Labour on 23%. Also, the clock is not 'ticking' because the EU are not going to do any serious negotiations until after the French/German elections. Might as well get ours out the way in the same time period.

People were speculating that she would try to call an early general election, but it is still suprising that she would considering that she would stand to lose more than she would gain. We might be in for another Lib Dem shocker.

That's what they want you to think. In reality Tim Farron is almost as unpopular as Corbyn and all the Lib Dems are achieving is splitting the left wing vote. They will gain seats, though, but not enough to do anything.

The Lib Dems are centre left, not left wing. The left wing vote goes entirely to Corbyn, the centre left will be probably be 70/30 in favour of labour just due to general lack of trust in the lib dems and tories.
Either way the tories will win, but not necessarily by the massive majority that is expected. Be prepared for some small surprises.

Are British people generally satisfied with May? I know she hasn't had much time, but she honestly doesn't seem that good a leader, and barely in control of her own party. So despite Corbyn being a trainwreck, couldn't 2 months of campaigning on a campaign of "as soft a Brexit as possible" from Labor actually squeak out a victory?
