calfrobe bridge is gonna be closed soon, some areas south of probably mcknight are closed as well. It's gonna be an absolute shitstorm by memorial dude. I'd avoid anything but like small local drives tbh

Yo chris you should be able to hit stoney no problem from Airdrie. You can completely avoid the city. What area do you have to get too?

Just basically hit Stoney 2 minutes past Balzac from the deerfoot, get onto shaganappi and then merge onto John Laurie.

LOL while people wait in line to get bottled water in prep for the water treatment to be compromised, I am filling up water jugs and then going to the beer store.

I feel like I am winning at tragedy here hah

Also I think karmy needs to be knighted for making me feel a lot better in this tragedy. He got me TL+ out of nowhere and is helping with the barcraft here in calgary. <3

I'm very likely going to be sent to Calgary (from Kelowna, BC) for "emergency work" when the flooding begins to die down by my employer (Telus) because many of the telecommunication lines are basically going to be fucked from all the water. Really gonna suck.

Aside from that, I hope everyone manages to stay safe who is in Calgary atm :o

Here is an update for you all. I just got back from beltline, took crowchild straight down to 17th and the water is a few blocks from my basement apartment, but the drains have all backed up. So it smells delightful. I found this out during operation fish rescue to try to save my fish from certain death

I live in BC, but my one of my friends and his wife live in Calgary. They weren't evacuated but decided to head to his Uncles place which is a bit out of city. Their offices are downtown, and obviously they've been told not to return to work until the flooding subsides.

He said just like the OP that this came pretty much out of nowhere.

Sorry for not having time to inform myself, it is quite late and i have to go sleep. You have my sympathy. Was there deforestation in Alberta in the past few years? Could that factor in in having such a big, unexpected flood?

No, deforestation has nothing to do with it. Basically there are two factors: at the start of summer into about mid july we get more thunderstorms than just about anywhere in North America, being beaten by only a few more storms on average coming off the great lakes, if I recall. So precipitation is normally high, along with glacial melting as temps go up feeding into the bow river and related drainage basins. The other main factor is that there is a huge low pressure area to the south of us which is driving precipitation up from the states straight into the calgary drainage area.

200 or so mm of rain in 60 hours is more the cause than anything.

dont mean to thread crap but there is also massive flooding in india that pretty much dwarfs whats going on in calgary. 600 confirmed dead now but number probably going to end up much, much higher

To say I was shocked to read the news this morning is an understatement.Currently working up in northern Alberta. Fortunately I live south of the flooded zone and should return to a dry house.

Hopefully we can get to cleaning up this disaster sooner rather than later.
