Random Access Memories is the upcoming fourth studio album by French electronic music duo Daft Punk. It is expected to be released under exclusive license to Columbia Records on May 17, 2013 in Australia, May 20, 2013 in the United Kingdom and on May 21, 2013 in the United States. The album features collaborations with several artists including Nile Rodgers, Paul Williams, Giorgio Moroder, Pharrell Williams, Todd Edwards, DJ Falcon, Chilly Gonzales, Panda Bear and Julian Casablancas.
I liked the song before Pharell's singing got added. I've listened to several youtube extensions and remixes of the 15-second SNL ad. I'll probably like them more than Daft Punk's original. Hoping I'm wrong here when the full song gets released.
Very excited about this; it'll never live up to the hype but hopefully it'll be like human after all where a year later it suddenly all falls into place.
Best news next to new album would be confirmed tour dates.
This is going to be sick, the Giorgio Moroder interview was enough to convince me this will probably be album of the year (hopefully with the new Pet Shop Boys coming in a close second).
Here's a little Giorgio to hold everyone over while we wait for the next release
This is exactly what I want to hear; I've always had a thing for disco-tinged house, and DP's willingness to put conventional instrumentation at more of a forefront is going to allow them to create some really awesome sounds. Sometimes, good electronic music needs strings!
I've been a fan before my purchase of Insterstella 5555 and of course after watching to that iconic album/DVD. I think the EDM need some new influences and I think DP can set the tone for the coming decade.

But it would actually be kind of funny if it turns out to be absolute shite.
A lot of people are gonna find it shit for sure, just because its different from what they did before. Everyone was disappointed with human after all, until the live tours and then it kind of fell into place. It's still not their best album, but its not 'terrible' like it was reviewed in 2005.
You can't go wrong when you're Daft Punk and you take your time on the music as you should do. Really like their style, it's hard to find good quality music in this genre these days.

I bet this album is going to be harder, better, faster, and stronger than the last one. The pharrell sample is interesting... I sort of like it but it doesn't quite seem like DPs old style. I guess they're looking to evolve and try out some new styles this time around though.

9 minutes past 9, 9.9.1999 they got electric shock trough some of their equipment and became robots.

And I mean, how many people know that they are called Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter or, heck, even that they are French?
They really did a good job at not becoming starts while still making music that is really popular. I kind of wish more artists aimed at making their act be famous rather than aiming to be famous themselves.
Deadmau5 is a bit like that too, though he's a lot less private than Daft Punk is.
I saw it just few hours after the site came online and since then I'm hyped for this. In fact I'm so hyped and I read all about it that google gives me almost exclusively Daft Punk commercials on youtube and RAM banners all over the internet xD
It sounds and feels great so far. Can't wait! Have you guys seen the huge posters on walls with just their helmets on it and nothing more? Got to be the only producers who can do that and everyone knows what time it is! I'm curious how much money columbia put into the advertisement.
In anticipation of the daft punk album, here's something to hold you over, its a mixup of Justin Timberlake's suit & tie with the small 15 second loop from Daft Punk's ad' by someone called "The Hood Internet" it actualy makes the somewhat dull Suit & Tie really funky

I know but Ended is a bit extreme. I mean listen to Alive 2007, it is not something that got stuck in the 90's. Alive 2007 open up Human After All, which was a bit inconsistent and looking for a direction, yet
Discovery was awesome, and the anime videos for it... It's a different experience and it all makes sense. Here is something awesome also from France, in the spirit, while we are waiting.
This sounds fake to me, its mixed awfully and you can here where the snippets are mixed together
well Mr "contempt make me so cool" standard internet guy, this is clearly not patched, so unless they released enough samples to make this, i'd say it's pretty unlikely to be fake ...
The mix is bassy and overcompressed...well what a surprise ( plus they have 5 diferent mixes for radio, internet, cds, tv ect ...)
I think it's probably fake as well, but even if it is I don't mind. I've already heard several mixes made from the samples and I've liked most of them :D
I seem to be one of the few people who actually prefers Human After All to Homework. But I do consider Discovery to be the single greatest House album ever made and would put along side Thriller and Dark Side of the Moon...
But so excited about RAM, the fact that the track they put out is kinda like a mix between Discovery and Homework is so awesome... I really hope the rest of the album is done in a similar style to that of UNKLE's where each track is a collaboration between different people and has its own sound.
I also totally get why they wouldn't really want to tour with RAM, it's difficult to tour an album that's more like Discovery and more 'funky' than something like Human After All because it dsnt really lend its self to being in a big huge stadium with an insane pyramid with the most amazing light show the world has seen (the Alive 07 tour (that I went too)).
But yeah, so hyped I really can't wait... have it pre-orderd all over the place and will probably pirate the second it comes out in Australia, but for now am listening to the youtube clips and all there older albums

@topic As a big fan i'm really excited! I welcome their decision to experiment and get away from synthesizers only. But still, 'contact' will be the titel i'm looking forward to hear the most.
Anyway, i'm sure this album will be good and has it's own charm! Alive 2007 is really a great piece of music. It also gives hopes that i have a chance to get into a live event of them, finally lol

Uhm everyone with a slight ear for music can hear where each leaked snippet starts and stops and yes everthing you hear is from leaked snippets nothing is new except for the ending part where they added some sounds which sounds nothing like daft punk quality. We'll find out soon enough, but im 100% sure this is not the real deal.
i loved the old Daft punk style with synth electronic sounds and voices .This Pharell Clip makes me want to puke. I really hope the new style they are going to try out is good , otherwise it will be a big dissapointment.
I still think Human After All was good, but when Alive 2007 came out, it all made sense. Everything fit so perfectly. Regardless, the latest collaborators video with pharrell isn't as interesting as the other ones. I think Nile Rodgers' video is still the best, but Pharrell does like to confirm that he was drugged by the robots. Lol

I still think Daft Punk is pretty over rated. They sound pretty much the same as the other French electro disco artists like Sebastian and Justice, then there's MSTRKRFT and Crookers etc.
Not to hate, I like to listen to electro sometimes but it's not as good as people make them out to be.

I think Discovery might actually be my favourite album, period, even though I'm not particularly in love with any of the individual songs. it just flows so well together.

Sebastian and Justice make remixes of daft punk and the others weren't even in diapers when Daft Punk was killing the electro scene. Not to hate, but Daft Punk is in a league of its own.
I understand that there are a lot of younger people here, who are right to point out that Daft Punk's music is not that different from what many other artists are doing nowadays.
But you have to see the context of when they released Homework in 1997, it was an amazing piece, pushing electronic music into the mainstream by itself. At the time, many underground artists were experimenting with electro, but Daft Punk got it right, they showed the way to everyone.
That is a memory you can't remove, and we are many who have experienced that, and can't wait for them to do it again

The fact you think sebastiAn and daft punk sound similar blows my mind. They sound nothing alike.
Been hyped about it since I first heard the initial SNL piece. The list of collaborators is amazing, and including someone like Pharrell Williams is an impressive move. I really felt it worked out, his voice is pretty damn good. A lot of people seem to be really pissed about it, and there's no denying some of them are pissed about it simply because it's him. Talk about going against everything Daft Punk stands for.
I just really feel it sounds good. It works out. Real good. Can't wait to hear more.

Remember Discovery? A lot of people also started hating it and turned out a great album. Let the haters hate. They probably like Skrillex better. It's the new generation man.
Not too big of a fan of Daft Punk (still have a lot of respect for them!) because it is just too polished for me, but damn that "Get Lucky" really got me. So many huge names on this album.

I hope Pharrel Williams isn't on any of the other tracks on the album, otherwise I'll have to skip it I don't like his singing, just personal pref. I'm liking the fact that these guys are going back to live recordings when everyone else is ditching it

Thirteen tracks have been announced for the album. While not a complete track listing has been revealed, some title tracks have been officially mentioned, such as the lead single "Get Lucky" featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, "Lose Yourself to Dance" also featuring Pharrell, and "Contact" which features the only samples on the whole album.[3][4]
The wiki mentions two featuring Pharrell, I saw some other things that could push that value to three or four

I kinda doubt a fake track would allow some scratchy, unedited parts pass by. Anyway, fake tracks or not, they're still worth listening to!
that version actually sounds way more legit.
Fake, IMO. It just sounds like a remixed sample that they made into a 3 minute song to me. The words in the second half are identical and his voice sounds identical too. The part in the middle sounds pretty sketchy and lower quality.
Lot of Pharrell hate in here. Exaggerating the way he acted in his episode and shit. I'm going to be honest I knew nothing about the guy before this, but I don't see what the problem is, both when it comes to the music (he fits just fine, stylistically, considering the only thing we're judging by is <1 min of one song on the album) and his attitude.
I knew nothing about pharrell before the mention of his collaboration with Daft Punk. I immediately youtubed a bunch of his tracks and didn't like any of them..... but the stuff I've heard from the album I love.
Pharrell is kinda weird - didn't know what to think of his section. Got linked to another interview of his (with Nardwuar) and he seemed like a real cool, down to earth guy (still seemed like he was hiiigh but maybe it's just his personality?).
Doesn't mean I like his music though, rofl.
And again, as far as these 'get lucky leaks' go - at the top of this page are two clips from the song that weren't in any of the ads - I automatically dismiss any 'full versions' that don't have them.
Pharrell is a a fucking artist in every sense of the word. He lives, breathes, eats, and probably even shits music. His life has been nothing but music for the last 20+ years. Its what he loves, more then you, more then me, more then most people.
He has been involved in more music projects then you even know. This is his fucking life, don't be mad when he likes daft punk more then a normal person.
I have and will check this thread everyday till release, and can't even imagine what my first full listen to this album will be like.
Yeah I don't really understand the hate on Pharrell, he blends extremely well with the style Daft Punk is going for on the album. Daft Punk has had plenty of songs with vocals in it and it hasn't seemed to draw such criticism before.

Wow, the quality of the fakes just keeps going up. PS that one with verses is also fake. Everything in there is from the ads, other than the vocals which don't quite match Pharrell's (the verses just seem kinda 'off' regardless). It also lacks this guitar bit:
Trying to figure out why the vocals feel wrong - it's like it's a copy of what's already been shown in the ads, just with different words. There's no new musical material in this fake (other than the weird ending part).
It helps that I saw on twitter that some Italian guy is responsible for it so I'm confident about the 'diagnosis'.

I find that odd because Pharrell does so much in the music scene as a few guys have alluded to. The guy deserves some respect. He's a very good businessman.
Now this one sounds a hell of a lot more legit considering it has more verses from Pharrell. From what I have heard it is a radio edit and not the full length.
But then again it could just be an amazing fake, no way to know for sure unless there is a confirmation.
Edit: Actually now there are a ton of people calling it to be fake. I agree with them on how Pharrells lyrics sound different on all of the new verses than it does on the confirmed bits we have gotten so far. And there are also some minor issues like at 3:03, if you listen VERY closely on 1080, you can hear a clicking noise that would otherwise never make it onto any official release. Perhaps somebody found Pharrell's twin brother to record with? Beats me but I enjoy it regardless.

this is so wrong, and on the top of that you are clearly misusing the term synthetic when relating to music.

Part of me is hoping its unedited and the final edit is even better, but this is great already.
There's a lot of reason to believe it's either a preliminary edit or even a fake - all the vocal sections which haven't been previously released are unmastered, and there are several rough cuts or splices where you can hear a sound or word getting cut off. Also the leaked file is of a rather low quality (128 kbps mp3).
Slightly different from the more legit fakes, but it's generally the same. Nothing massively different. Does have DP singing over Pharrel though at one point. Tiny bit of solo'ing at the end by Nile Rogers.
Lol, he's playing it twice incase anyone missed it actually.

It is an older video, the uploader just put the un mastered (fake?) version of Get Lucky looped on there twice.

It's been out for a few hours now, and it's the same as the leak from two days ago (except slightly different/better quality). It's available to buy/download from Zune and has been for the last 4 hours or so, plus several radio stations playing it before the determined time.

The actual song isn't 100% the same as any of the leaks. But its 90% the same. Sry you didn't enjoy it, I fucking loved it every second of it.
As others have said, maybe that 9pm PDT time was just an estimate and I'm sure they will play it again at that time to make sure everyone gets a chance to hear it on the radio. Several other stations have been playing that same exact version now. I think the stations just got it earlier than expected and DP said fuck it go ahead.
I suppose this is kinda like a US election if your candidate has pretty much lost (didn't get the states needed) and all the stations are calling it, but I suppose you still wait for the concession to believe it's happened.
Well looks like the leaked versions were in fact real. I'm slightly disappointed that the 1 minute teaser was pretty much the entire song, but not too bad.

Yeah, that probably makes the impact even worse :|.
All that buildup and the radio edit is lacking some of my favorite part from the collab videos.
while the joint sounds less DP-ish, I still thoroughly enjoy everything and especially Pharrell's vocal. Dont think theres another singer who fits better. Dont forget the album version is 6 minutes long

I really liked it, and am not much of a Daft Punk fan or a music listener in general. Not too sure about the vocals tho. Bit too much, I liked the parts without them the most.

Welcome to EDM. Sometimes, the best part of a hit is what other great artists can do to improve it. I look forward to their album because I expect it to be solid, but moreso to see what other people/musicians can do with it.
The radio edit just released is a bit disappointed. The synths towards the end are a bit of abummer, and it's just too short compared to the actual length of the song. Bit disappointed in it, but it's still an awesome song. A bit too much Rodgers and Williams though, would love to see a bit more Daft Punk.
Slightly disappointed - overall it was a pretty good song, but the vocals were weak and the robotic part wasn't prominent enough in my opinion. Hopefully the full album version fixes these and also adds more of Nile Rodgers' guitar - there are some little lines and riffs shown in the teasers which weren't present in this version.
I still vividly remember seeing Interstella 555 when i was 16 years old at a 3 day, 10.000 visitors music festival in a small room with less then 50 people. My mind was forever blown.
"There was a sense of searching for a record we hadn't done," Bangalter said. The breakthrough came when they started experimenting with live musicians and "[recreating] what we used to do with machines and samplers, but with people". While Daft Punk still use vintage vocoders and a custom modular synth, the record has hardly any samples. "[We tried] to make robotic voices sound the most human they've ever sounded, in terms of expressivity and emotion."
Accordingly, lots of musicians became involved. Besides the big names like Nile Rodgers, Pharrell, the Strokes' Julian Casablancas, Giorgio Moroder and Panda Bear, the Frenchmen procured "top-notch session players".
"All these guys were tripping on meeting again and playing together again," said De Homem-Christo. Although Kanye West does not appear on Random Access Memories, Daft Punk have worked with the Stronger rapper on his new record. "He's a good friend," De Homem-Christo said.
By working with real people, in real studios, Daft Punk said they hope to shake up the complacent genre of EDM. "Today, electronic music is made in airports and hotel rooms, by DJs traveling," Bangalter said. "It has a sense of movement, maybe, but it's not the same vibe as going into these studios that contain specific things … You hear a song – whose track is it? There's no signature."
It's more than that. I liked the first 15 second leak better than the second. It's when first vocals started being involved (though the 1 minute clip was still good) then dominated the track (taking away imo from instrumentals) that I kinda went 'meh'.
Well, admittedly another part of it was that from a hype follower point of view, almost all of the material in the radio edit was shown in ads etc. I wasn't too excited about the vocals, which is about all that was added. So those of us who expected something new in the single are of course a bit disappointed.
The big thing I'm really missing is more of Rodgers, as teased by the collab vids but cut in the radio edit...
I really dig the song. I don't know about you all, but I interpreted " Get Lucky" to be a love song to EDM and a description of the creation process for Daft Punk. Talking about how they spend so much time working on that sound, flirting with music to hopefully get lucky and find that perfect noise. Daft Punk really wanted to mix things up with this album and I think the lyrics
"We've come too far To give up who we are So let's raise the bar And our cups to the stars"
really speak to what they were trying to do. I think its a great first showing of their new work and while its not like old Daft Punk I am very excited to see what they did now.
I thought it's a pretty good song considering that 1: it's a radio edit and 2: this is probably the most poppy song on the album. I started getting a voyager-esque vibe listing to the instrumental interplay once I payed more attention to the keys and guitar.
Yes, its good. Can i just say that your signature is really missing a comma. Without the comma it sounds like you are saying that you enjoy getting, or are often, shit on. This is apposed to the assumed meaning, which is supposed to express that you are awesome...

I don't really like Get lucky that much. The rhytm-guitar work is really nice but the vocals falls flat - with a boring hook that fails to lift off. After about 2:30 minutes an instrumental/synth-voice breaks comes that are pretty nice, but still doesn't fly when it is joined by the refrain. I feel that two and a half minutes is a long time with Pharell's lyrics starting at 0:15.
Quite crude and boring structure of the song, follows the standard. I don't think there is enough material in it for 4 minutes.
Still it is a decent song and I don't mean to bash it. 3/5

It kind of reminds me of those old 70s pop hits, like Chic or for some reason I'm reminded of Junior - Mama Used to Say. Which I think is sort of what they intended to go for.

That is because the guitarist on this track, Nile Rodgers, wrote for Chic ;-) You can listen to him telling the story in the Collaborators video with him, linked in the OP.
At first listen, the single is really weak. The Pharell's vocals are kind of '...what?' it's not anthemic like One More Time or Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, not does it pound like the tracks on Human After All, nor does it have the more mellow sounds of something from Homework.
Despite that, after a few listens (especially on a nice sound system or listening while you drive) you get hooked. The guitar work by Nile Rodgers is AWESOME. Other than the first line or two, Pharell's vocals are catchy click perfectly with the vibe on the song. On top of that, the lyrics are actually good? I know that sounds stupid when talking about a electronic song with essentially 4 lines of lyrics, but it's true.
It's a very different track from what I expected, but not a bad one. I'd give it 3.5/5 or a 4 depending on the rest of the album and/or the album version.

Pretty awesome but it cuts off mid song and it's pretty short. More Daft Punkey than "Get Lucky".
I would be happy if the rest of the album goes this way. It sounds somewhat Discovery-esque with a bit influence of TRON soundtrack. Still this is a horrible leak in term of sound quality, the full song will definitely have more to offer

It's always a good start to a Monday morning when I'm driving to work and the radio is playing Daft Punk. It really brightened my morning to listen to "Get Lucky" on my way to work.
so I give that Giorgio by Moroder a few loops. Damn the interview actually makes sense as it really contributes to the song. When he said "everybody calls me, Giorgio" and the music starts, I just feel so.. glorious, so pumped. really!

They released the single for "Get Lucky" already, and the full HQ song is on youtube.
Saw all the tweets on twitter about how the Album is and I went out and purchased a Vinyl copy on top of by Digital copy. If its as good as they say it is, DP deserves it.
Most of it is great, some of it is amazing, some of it is awful.
Goirgio by Moroder/Lose yourself to dance are amazing so far, Get Lucky much better than radio version. Within and touch are awful for me on first listen.

Touch is pretty out there.
Hehe I read in some review that one track was absolutely awful.. ^__^
These vocals T_T Well I guess I hated the vocals for Get Lucky in the beginning as well but now I actually like them. So I'll withold further judgement.
I think a few of these are going to be much better on the second time through.
That is, not many of them were begging 'please listen to me again right now!' the first time around, but I'm getting itches to put tracks on repeat on round 2.
it was confirmed weeks ago that this is from a song by a completely different band. I agree that it's very cool though, I'd wanna find the original...
Reading comments now seems that people aren't sure where its sampled from or even if its from a whole song. People seem to think its a slowed down and edited sample from Yellowire - Tonight is the Night (Beato Remix).

so far whats really disappointing for me is that for *usual* daft punk songs, lyrics arent really lyrics, just another line in the beat if that makes sense, whereas here theyre proper voices which distracts from the bass/synth. yeah just take away the voices and its really good(i love instrumental tracks though)

I expected it to be more upbeat i guess, judging from get lucky. But your right, its good.
The music is good, but it's not Daft Punk. This is why many people are disappointed, me included. I like Doing It Right the most. Can't wait for the remixes from Daft Punk themselves

I'm disappointed with the album on the whole, given the only teaser I listened to was the Get Lucky song and was expecting more along that vibe and pace. I think they took 70's/80's a bit too far, but I guess that's what they were shooting for: Random Access Memories
this album has been hyped wayyyyyyy tooooo much. for realz. i havnt heard it yet and i expect it to be listenable. but dumb fanboys have been repping this shit like its the 2nd coming. good going
Well, the album is definitely interesting. I don't really know how much I like it yet. It's probably one of those albums that either grows on people or doesn't. I was surprised at how relatively little of the 70s influence there was given how much it was hyped. It's also far more synthetic-sounding than what I was expecting given how the music was described in pre-release interviews.

At the beginning of the album, it's really artist centric, with that taste of electronica that makes it Daft Punk. Near the end, it sways from that artist centric feel. It's like it goes from 70s/80s funk/boogie feel to a experimental sound reminiscent of Pink Floyd.
Another thing it sounds like, the beginning feels like their old stuff from Homework/Discovery. The later half sounds like their Tron stuff. I don't get a huge Human After All vibe from it at any point, which might be what people are missing. Or maybe they were expecting a modern boogie/funk album with Get Lucky being released first.
Contact is definitely a winner, a lot of the other songs are really too slow to judge right now, requires additional listening, but there are a couple that sound like they will grow on me, Giorgio, Instant Crush, Touch, especially the ones where they allow a bit more complex melody and faster pacing, like Contact.
This album is gonna be a grower for sure. So far I like it but am not really jumping up and down like nuts. But thats how discovery was for me as well, and that album is by far one of my favs.
On May 14 2013 06:18 clementdudu wrote: highlights are definitly the new version of get lucky and contact, which made my heart beat at 200 bpm and i felt like my head was going to explode
Contact was the only thing that blew my mind. The rest is just so.. mellow. Which isn't a bad thing necessarily, but still.
I actually love it, especially because it's so different from the other albums. I find it weird people argue that only fanboys would defend the album to death, when it sounds so different from all the other albums. If you only like the Homework-sound, this won't be great. If you only love Discovery, this is decent, but nothing special. If you like the Human After All sound, this isn't even close to that. If you like Alive 2007.. this rarely reaches those levels of energy (notable exception being Contact). It just so happens I like Electro, but I also like a lot of 70s and 80s music, so this is right up my alley.
Also, it took a whole lot of years for people to appreciate Discovery the way they do now, and I'm really curious to see where they'll be taking these songs next. There's a lot of mix potential for sure, so if you guys are right about this I'm really looking forward to the daft punk mix to this album (:
Didn't quite get the vibe that I had during all of the collaborators clips. Kind of disappointed in that manner. Otherwise i think its a pretty good album. Really liked the Touch, Get Lucky, Doing it right and Contact is best imo :D.
Hope their remixes will be even better with the vibe collaborators transmitted ~~
I'll be listening to this one for long time i feel
S Tier: Contact A+ Tier: Giorgio By Moroder, Touch, Get Lucky, Motherboard, Doin' it Right A- Tier: Give life back to music, Lose yourself to dance, Beyond, Fragments of time B+ Tier: The game of Love, Within, Instant crush
Dude this is not happening. This can't be the real version. I'm so disappointed right now. I knew this was going to be kind of a more funky and laid back piece but what happened? This is not the Daft Punk I know and love; Besides the song ''contact'', I don't hear any daft, nor any punk. All I hear is autotuned funky pop. I can understand why people would enjoy it though. It's a fine piece of music by itself.
All in all I would say that this album is uninspired, and if it was released in the 60s, then maybe it could have been called the sound of the future.

I don't get why people like Touch. Have you actually listened to it and to the vocals? It's absolutely over the top atrocious ;p.
For what is supposed to be a 'west coast' album its still extremely french, you hear influence in it from recent french electro (justice = contact, giorgio by moroder = kavinsky, certain songs sounding like they could have been done by air). And yes, it'll get remixed again, probably the same treatment they gave human after all by integrating it into the rest of their work for live shows.

If you have ever seen them live, you would know Daft Punk live is the 2nd coming. I think I came like 4 times when I saw them.
That said...... I'm not sure how much I like all the singing and the idea of self-aware robots, but the music is definitely solid and workable. Remember how vanilla the tracks on homework and less so discovery were? There is plenty of potential for their live shows and remixes from this material.
I really wanted to like the album.. but I couldn't get into the more retro sound of it. If all the songs were like Contact though, I think I would have loved it (it was the only song I really enjoyed)
Game of Love just kept making me think of Game of Thrones. Kept picturing the Game of Thrones characters going through their lives with this song playing in the background lol.
Is the iTunes stream disabled already? The songs are greyed out for me in the iTunes store, no matter which way I approach the page (even the giant home page links that say "stream it for free")

really good analysis actuallyoO
contact sounds a lot like justice and air could have made a lot of those songs.
Now the big hating and the worshipping will be completely unaffected by the actual quality of this release. It's a pretty good album, let's see if it's good enough to become a classic like Discovery.

Couple of the songs I just had no interest in at all and I was literally falling asleep listening to them and forgot I was listening to the new album Tis ok I didn't like all 100% of their songs on previous albums. Some were def gonna be favorites and added to the glorious DP playlist of their best stuff.
7/10 Not their best album, was definitely different, but that's what Daft Punk does. Still great to listen to imo.
I'm not a big fan of Daft Punk, only heard about them a couple weeks ago. There are a few really solid tracks on this album, Beyond, Fragments, and Lucky are probably the major standouts. But I can't figure out why people like Lose Yourself to Dance, the vocals are extremely irritating and repetitive. Probably one of the worst tracks.

Its probably just me, but I feel as though Doin' it Right is the weakest song on the album. It just lacks excitement and feels boring.
Regardless of your opinion of the album's impact or status, we should all take a moment to admit that, once again, Daft Punk has come out with an album that is great to have in the background while making love.

I know the general consensus here is that this album is not too Daft Punk, but damn if this is not some of the most quality musical project in recent memories. The album has a great variety, complicated sound layers. It's not necessarily better than say, Discovery, but definitely an evolution. God that Within piece is so good
Giorgio, Within, Contact, and Instant Crush are my favorite tracks on this album.
I think people were expecting too much along the lines of an Alive 2007 remake, hence the collective sentiment that this isn't much of a Daft Punk album.
On my first listen, I enjoyed Giorgio and Contact, but don't know that either would end up in a playlist for me. They have a ton of potential for remixing/sampling though. Everything else (outside of Get Lucky) was pleasant but didn't stand out.
But multiple listens can change things dramatically. Instant Crush grew on me the quickest from this album, followed closely by Doin' it Right. Both are so good.
I'm listening to this now, just finished 'Touch' with Paul Williams.
Um, this is the best album I've heard in fucking ages. From Giorgio on this album has been a masterpiece. They're not all going to be radio hits but it's just a beautiful tribute to dance and electronic music. Every track surprises.
For those who haven't heard of Paul Williams, all he wrote was the best goddamn song of all time.
Edit: Just finished the album. This is Daft Punk's equivalent to Pet Sounds. I know this album has been hyped a lot but it's hard to imagine them making a more thoughtful and mature album then this. Although if you're simply expecting a rehash of Discovery than your going to be disappointed.

Same, this track is amazing. It's the only one that feels a little bit like the ''old'' Daft Punk music. So far I like Contact, Giorgio and Doin' it right and Instant Crush. I listened to some of the songs yesterday but today on my work to work was listening to the full thing and so far I really like Doin' right, Instant Crush , Fragments of time, Contact and Giorgio.
Overall a pretty good album - there were a few really excellent tracks, though unfortunately a few mediocre ones as well. Definitely over-hyped, although that was to be expected.

Great - Beyond, Motherboard, Contact Good - Get Lucky, Fragments of Time, Doin' It Right Average/Poor - Give Life Back to Music, Giorgio by Moroder, Instant Crush, Loose Yourself to Dance, Touch What were you thinking - Game of Love, Within For me the first half of the album was pretty poor, second half was pretty good
I actually feel bad that when someone asks me what I thought about the album the first word that pops into my head is 'boring'. I'd rather I hated it, because then it would have at least invoked some strong response from me. No highs or lows just watered down facets providing glimpses of different aspects of their discography, crushed of any meaning.
I think overall this album is great. Not a fan of Contact myself but Lose Yourself to Dance and Giorgio by Moroder were standouts for me and the rest were great too.
I think contact only made it on to the album because its what they're thinking of using as an opener for their next live shows. I mean, its not a bad track but its a buildup to something that never really comes and it doesn't fit in with the rest of the album at all.
People are overthinking this album lol. Guess that's what happens with hype.
I think it's all good. Very diverse. Which is what I expected. I definitely didn't expect an album full of songs like Get Lucky, like some seemed to.
My favorite part of this whole ordeal is the spectrum of negative reactions. Some saying it's still "too electronic", some saying it's "too retro". Central limit theorem at its finest I suppose.
This album is pretty much what I expected, and I wouldn't even call myself a rabid Daft Punk fan. Not sure what others were waiting for.

Maybe not sound wise, but mood wise? That was my intention there. I personally like the more chill, somber stuff that everyone else claims boring (in general, not just on RAM).
I don't know why I like this album. I seriously don't. I have been listening to it while working last night and today at work as well. At first I thought I would have the same feeling I had when listening to Justice 2nd album but somehow it's way more interesting. I can't quite describe it. Just listening to it feels good.
My first thought was this doesn't sound like Daft Punk. But then thinking about their history, apart from Alive where they mash it together to a golden thread, not once have they sounded like before.
I personally think they dont disappoint. You can really hear what their TRON experience gave them. Emotions and painting a scene is much much more important to them it seems this time around. Calm down, enjoy, be happy, be melancholic, love, all while nodding your head to it in the coolest and smoothest way possible.

You don't appear to have a good grasp of what the central limit theorem is, might want to double check your understanding.
Feels out of my element here reading all these armchair music critics - not too hard to float some bullshit 'intellectual' reasons when something doesn't match your taste or genre expectations. This is not to say that legitimate arguments can't be made, but I find it more interesting reading e.g. the twitter reactions of other electronic musicians, especially the ones that haven't 'made it' yet so don't have to worry about who's 'listening' so to say.
That said, not too hard to see why not everyone would be happy with this album. I find it interesting how controversial some tracks, e.g. 'Touch' are.
Also interesting are various interviews were Daft Punk predicted that the fan reaction was probably going to be mixed at best.
1. I think 'Touch' is one of those songs that immediately touched me emotionally (no pun intended). It reminds me of the feeling I got when I first heard 'Stairway To Heaven' and 'Time', by Zeppelin & Pink Floyd respectively. When the chanting of "if love is the answer, hold, hold on" I had massive goosebumps and began to have tears of joy. Less than 5 songs have managed to do that to me in my entire life. And when he says "touch almost makes me feel real", it made me realize that surrounding yourself with people you love is the key to happiness in life. To me, the meaning of 'Touch' is both physical and emotional. In 30 years, I will listen to this song and have such overwhelming nostalgia, similar to when I played 'Stairway To Heaven' for my parents.
2. Game of Love and Within shocked me. Both gave off a sad/melancholy vibe, and once again, I was deeply touched.
3. Instant Crush, Lose Yourself to Dance, and Get Lucky are the most 'radio' sounding songs. However, this is not a bad thing. If these songs are constantly played for the next year, I will be so overjoyed because they just make me smile so much.
4. Giorgio by Moroder is just a fucking masterpiece. The speech where he says something along the lines of "once you let go of what something SHOULD be, you can create something amazing", followed by the strings just blew my mind. This and Touch are truly two of the most amazing pieces of music I have ever heard.
5. Beyond is another classic for me.
6. Fragments of Time is slightly repetitive, and one of the two songs I don't love.
7. Motherboard bothered me because of the water sounds. I absolutely hate the sound of water dripping.
8. Doin' it Right is the most surprising song of the album. The bass hits were very unexpected, but greatly appreciated. Of course Panda Bear compliments Daft Punk, as they are both geniuses.
9. Give Life Back to Music was a great intro, and Contact was a great conclusion.
In the end, I give it a 10/10 (the water drops in Motherboard can be overlooked)
Personally, this stands next to my other favorite albums of all time: -Dark Side of the Moon -Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band -Discovery -Illmatic -Good Kid, MAAD City

The whole album covers the dawn of electronic and synth music, from disco to synth pop to to prog to glam rock.
It terms of composition and pure songwriting, it's wickedly inventive. Anyone that says they can hear Giorgio by Moroder, Touch or Contact coming is a liar. A liar I say!

It's a TL standard to throw out random mathematical and argumentative terms with no understanding of them to appear smarter. We play Starcraft, after all. Strawman fallacy anyone?
Not my favorite Daft Punk album but it is definitely growing on me the more I listen to it. Instant Crush/Doin' It Right are probably my favorite songs so far.

People were whining about "One More Time" when that single landed, because it was so synth and pop compared to the no-bullshit house of Homework.
Then Discovery became one of the most influential and praised albums of the last decade.
People will come around
Pretty much, I think we will be talking about this album for years to come, whether it's disappointment or success in the end.
I have to agree. Some songs are definitely growing on me. I've listened to Instant Crush about 15 times today.

Mine as well I believe it's growing on me because once you get past the initial shock that it's not the Daft Punk you know, you realize there is actually great music to be found, just different than what you expected.
Just sat down and streamed the whole thing on iTunes. While I enjoyed Discovery more, this is a very good album. It has some forget able lows but some extremely great highs to it.

I'm putting it up there with Kid A, Paul's Boutique and Pet Sounds. It may not have the band's most memorable hits but it's definitely a complete, innovative album made at the peak of their career and abilities.
Been listening to it all day. I have been enjoying it, but I do not think it will be a "stayer" for me personally. Favs: Doin it right, touch, get lucky (that guitar is just fucking sweeeeeeet), giorgio and fragments of time is ok. I am really looking forward to a radio edit of touch, a bit too long winded for me atm, I just want more of the good parts!
Also after listening to it I notice that some of the music I have been listening to sounds a bit crude when it comes to what I think is called production? Just seems a bit stale or perhaps staccato is a better term.
It has some songs I find weak like Within and The Game Of Love but I'd say that I find more enjoyable songs in the album than I have on the earlier ones.
The extended intro on Get Lucky compared to the Radio Edit is godlike by the way.
I absolutely love this album. I think the thing I love about DP is that every album is always different, yet still has that DP feel to it. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but man I just love this album.
Favorites: Doin' it right, Giorgio, Lose Yourself To Dance, Give Life Back To Music.
I know I'll be listening to this constantly for a while. Its on-par with discovery and slightly ahead of homework in my book.
As someone with a pretty huge music collection and widely varying tastes, I enjoy this album a lot. It's true, if you were looking for more Daft Punk as you knew it, you'll probably come back disappointed. But having scrounged the edges of the internet for clips and leaks and interviews about this album, I had a good idea of what to expect: Disco.
I think many of the tracks make a straight up pass in the disco genre, If you could ship them back in time to clubs in the 70s and 80s, they'd fit right in. Lose yourself to Dance stands out, obviously.
More interestingly though, there seems to be no solid genre for the album. Sure, it's all "electronic music". But I wouldn't even say it's all dance music. There's a couple really dafty tracks, a few disco tracks, And a few rather experimental genre fusion tracks that I enjoyed very much. Now I didn't like Touch very much. I appreciate it, but it just doesn't tickle my ear. The rock/funk/electro fusions though tickle me very much. Beyond and Contact both achieve a really smooth midpoint between those styles of music in the way that only Daft Punk could. I don't know if Contact rivals that old Aerodynamic song, but it's still a good "hard rock" song if you could call it that.
All in all, The album met my expectations and I like it. I've had it on repeat during ladder sessions for a couple days now. There's really only two or three songs that feel like old Daft Punk, and if all you wanted was that you may be left felt wanting. However I hope that these good disco feels reverberate through the scene and bring back something we've been missing in music for years.
The more I listen the more I get where they are coming from with this album. Sure there are obvious disco vibes but Touch sounds like it could be a David Bowie outtake, whereas other songs remind me of Time-era ELO and even early 80s Prince.
OMG I AM LOVING THIS! My friend just asked me if I had finished yet. As in jizzed myself. I was like - no, no this kind of awesome deserves long slow beautiful lovemaking.

Usually Daft Punk lyrics have just been effectively another instrumental/rhythmic layer where the content of the lyrics doesn't really matter. One of the things which bugs me about the new album is that they tried to write "real" lyrics for too many of the songs, which generally ended up sucking because that's not what they do and not what they are good at. All 5 of my favorite tracks (Contact, Giorgio, Give Life Back to Music, Motherboard, Doin' It Right) are either instrumental or have repetitive "daft punky" lyrics.
I really can't stand Game of Love, I'm skipping it already. I love the robotic voices for bringing some simple extra music layer to songs, but with this song they try to use them emotionally and it doesn't work for me at all, sounds so cheesy. I'm also not impressed by the first song. Within is better but still forgettable.
I really really like Instant Crush, it such an awesome song. Easily the best of the album imo, it has such a good vibe to it. I guess the song title is appropriate . Doing it right and Contact are awesome together. I wish Lose yourself to dance was faster, it's pretty hard to dance on a beat this slow, but still a cool song though the cmon cmon thing really saves it.
I like Touch and Giorgio but I don't really see them as songs but more as a musical experience. The voice work on Touch is amazing! Wish they had continued the end of Giorgio in a new beat for the next song though, love that sound. The Beyond intro is epic, the continuation meh.
I wish the album was a bit more 'happy', (this is what I expected after the single) it seems so dramatic at times. As a whole it's still pretty impressive, but not really instantly likable.
I am a big fan of the album, I absolutely how they moved to live instruments as oppose to synthetics. While it does not sound too much like the traditional Daft Punk we are used to, it still lives up to my expectations of them.
I pretty much love all of the songs except for the parts in Motherboard with the water sounds, I just simply hate water sounds. I also wasn't a fan of Doin' it Right, on the entire album that is the only one I just skip through.

Terrible music, not polyphonic enough, not dynamic enough, melodies not nearly catchy enough, bass/build ups weak as shit, high/mids not nearly piercing enough. Not even going to get started on the cliched harmonies, progressions, etc.
Basically, rock trying too hard to be electro. Something of a rock-electro in-between abomination, just not my cup of tea.

Some source said all of the drums except on Doin' It Right and 1 other song were played live.
Also supposedly they only used 1 synthesizer throughout the entire album and the rest was live instrumentation, though I'd be amazed if that was true given the wide variety of different electronic sounds throughout the album - what amount of screwing with settings would it take to get the same mellow synth that played the melody of Giorgio and the end of Get Lucky to make those crazy sounds at the end of Contact?

I'm sorry but I simply cannot understand what's good about Doing it right. Reading this thread I've noticed that people really enjoy it, so I've been trying to appreciate this song for 2 days now, and find what's appealing about it. Surely, I must be missing something. The instrumental is extremely generic and awfully repetitive. I mean this sounds like the kind of stuff I used to make with Fruity Loops when I was 15. Not to mention the singing is absolutely horrendous and obnoxious. Surely I'm not the only one to have noticed how annoyingly bad this song is?
Can you people tell me what's so good about this track? Not trying to troll here. I've been listening to music for 15-20 years, I have very eclectic tastes and I can appreciate various genres. I enjoy classical, hip hop, trash metal, house, country, you name it. As long as it's good, I'll listen to it. But this "doin it right" song? I simply can't see what's good about it.
tried to listen to the album for several hours these last days... and i really cant enjoy it at all. I wasnt really that hyped in the first place, but still reaaaaally disappointed by the outcome anyways.
I just had a quick peek and all I could this of is "wow, this is really bad", haha. I guess I will re-evaluate my opinion after a detailed listening to the whole album but so far I am rather disappointed. I have still hopes to change my mind though as this has happened from time to time that some music is kind of an acquired taste. :D

Keep listening. This was exactly my first response. I really disliked it, you can find my posts. I am truly addicted to the album right now, there are only about 3/4 songs I really don't like. The rest I love. Once you get past the initial disappointment that it isn't the Daft Punk you thought it was going to be you will hear amazing music.

It's just a very addictive tune to me rofl. It's indeed the least complex song on the album. I liked it the first couple of times I heard it but now it's getting a bit repetitive. Anybody really likes Within? I love the piano.

wat. Couldnt describe my feelings towards this album better.
I think it's the same for a lot of people. When I first listened I only liked it, but now I can't turn it off. Reviews of Instant Crush were really meh but I think it's my favourite track right now.

lol, computers might not be for you then...
iTunes is not exactly lightweight and likes to install additional crap on your computer. This is well known and has nothing to do with me other than me being selective on what I put on a PC.
You are not alone in this. I also refuse to allow iTunes anywhere near my PC. I'm sad that apple decided to change their iPod database with the iPhone launch so Winamp at minimum can't manage the new ones for me anymore.
Related to the topic at hand, I really just want to lose myself to dance ... that song is just sooo good, and the album version of get lucky is even better than the radio edit by a decent margin (the extra parts really add to the overall flow of the song I feel).
Giorgio by Moroder is randomly missing/forcibly muted from it, lol. Edit: the beginning & ending of tracks are mixed together in an odd fashion - probably an attempt to beat out those who would take it down. The BPM might also be altered as some of the songs feel a bit slow.
Dancing in my chair while programming in the backyard, really like this album. Neighbors going to give me funny looks until they know what I'm listening to
iTunes version leaked on some pirate site, dunno from which store though Been listening to nothing but this album for the past 3 days. It's funny how different song takes turn to grow on me. I wonder if Lose Yourself to Dance could have made a better lead single as it's catchy as fuck, I could have it on loop for eternity

I've still been listening to that leak because I don't know how to stream it on itunes rofl. Is there a higher quality download somewhere?

I got the iTunes aac plus version from New Zealand store (which makes sense as it's May 17 already there). It has a higher-volumed, sharper (but also more "grainy") sound than the reddit leak
I knew the second I heard this album people wouldn't immediately like it. Then it would become one of the most beloved albums of all time.
I'm going hipster and saying I loved it the second I heard it. As in, one of my three favorite albums of all time. Now I've listened to it more, and I love it even more.
This album is like Dark Side of the Moon. From start to finish, it's an experience I will NEVER forget.
Give Life Back to Music (10/10) - Outstanding intro. The Game of Love (9/10) - Weakest song of the album. And I fucking love it. Giorgio by Moroder (10/10) - First mindblowing song of the album. Within (10/10) - Sad, depressing robots connect to my soul Instant Crush (10/10) - Instant classic. Can't stop smiling when I listen to it. Lose Yourself to Dance (9.5/10) - Great, groovy song. Goes on for 1 minute too long. Touch (11/10) - Goosebumps when the trumpets start playing, tears falling when the violins come in after... Get Lucky (9.5/10) - Another great song. Needed more robot :D Beyond (10/10) - The opening is like being at Disneyland when you're 5, and the rest is just sexy Motherboard (10/10) - Like I'm on an adventure and I find something that scares me at first, then I realize it's okay. Fragments of Time (10/10) - This song is like looking in the past and loving it, while still moving forward in life. Doin' it Right (10/10) - Surprising bass hits, but I loved the combination between Panda Bear and the robots. Contact (11/10) - What is this song? At first I thought it was about contact aliens, and then I realized something. It's about coming to terms with who you really are, the moment you are dying. When I realized this, I started thinking back to the rest of the album. Holy shit. It's all connected, and in perfect order. And then I started the album over.
After listening to the album at least 25 times now, this is my personal take on what it all means Give Life Back to Music - I've been reborn and life is amazing. Starts off with a bang. The Game of Love - You (Life), I've been here before, and you got away. And I miss you. But I'm glad I'm back. Giorgio by Moroder - Finding my way through life. Breaking down 'what should be and what shouldn't be' and realizing that life is what I make it. Within - I am so confused going through life. This is the first time I have really thought about life and death. Who am I? Instant Crush - I'm a teenager now, and it's the first time I've held hands with a girl. We've confessed that we like each other, and we can't stop smiling. Lose Yourself to Dance - My first middle school dance. The first time I really let go of myself, and I dance my ass off. We're all dancing our ass off. Touch - I'm a bit older now. I'm with a girl and I touch her leg, she holds my neck. It's amazing, and I remember this feeling from somewhere before. But I want more. We kiss *stars go off*. I realize I am in love and can't hold back my emotions anymore. We're lost in each other as we can't stop kissing and touching each other. The night is over, but I want more. I need something more than just ...touch... Get Lucky - It's time. We're moving beyond just touch. Life is amazing, and it's time to have sex. It's magical. Beyond - I'm truly in love. 'The perfect song is written with silence' I have found the one. We can lay together for hours in absolute silence, just staring into each other's eyes. Motherboard - I'm moving through life at an incredibly fast pace. It's an adventure. It's building and building, but I am afraid of getting older. The fear builds and builds, until I realize that getting older is not scary. I relax. Fragments of Time - I am much older now, with children. I see them experience things that I remember experiencing. It's overwhelmingly nostalgic, and I can't stop loving life. I look back at the past with a smile, and look toward the future with an even bigger smile. Doin' it Right - I've finally come to terms that different people move to the beat of their own drum. Everybody is moving, but we're all doing it right. We're all living properly, because there is no wrong way to live. We're doin' it right. Contact - I'm nearing the end of my fantastic life. I look back and can't hold it back anymore. I love everyone and everything, but I'm in fear of death. It builds and builds as I get closer and closer to it. I am overwhelmed by my fear, until it all stops. I calm down. Death is here. I'm okay with it. Silence. Time to move on to the next life. Then it all starts over again
Its a great album but sadly media has destroyed it i think. Daft Punk wasnt this popular before Tron: Legacy. After that movie everyone got hooked on this type of music and theyre music is now overplayed on radio Really grow tired of the music when everyone plays it. Its a great success for the album, but i hate that so many suddenly likes Daft Punk.

Assuming you're talking about the prevalence of popular electronic dance music (EDM): -Tron Legacy soundtrack was (mostly) not EDM -This album is not EDM -Daft Punk has been popular since Discovery (2001), and even before then to a lesser extent

I think you should give the album another couple of months..... it's too early for anyone to tell if this album is timeless like you say it is.

Damn this album is amazing. This is even better than the Discovery album excpet a few of the tracks (HBFS, Digital Love, One More time), but overall more consistent. This and Armin van Buuren's Intense are two amazing electronic releases this month :D!!!

album is pretty sick though, sadly denied touring rumors started by Pharell

I would have to strongly resist the urge to slap whomever said this to me.
I like the ablum quite a bit, but I was hoping that this would be album to equal Discovery. Really 'evolve' dance in someway, make it smarter, more intelligent, away from the wubwubwub. Instead we get a (really great) throwback to the 70's.
I hope bangalter remixes it all properly and I get what I want ;p.

I wanna listen to it just see what all the craze is about. I've never really gotten on the Daft Punk bandwagon, but I know people who love them, like my brother who gushes over them. I guess this will be one of my first Daft Punk experiences outside of the songs everyone who doesn't listen to them know.
I gave the album a full spin yesterday evening while studying, and I really like it. It's not the daft punk of ten years ago, but few bands ever stay the same (and get away with it).

and I think you are wrong. if anything, Daft Punk was MORE popular at the release of discovery / human after all than at the release of Tron.

I've been listening to only dubstep for a looong time, I guess I should have said it was only refreshing for me Anyway I'm liking the resurgence of 80's-like dreamy electro-pop that's been going on and this kinda reminds me of that... so I like this (hope that makes sense)

Just because some music isn't played on radio and TV that it isn't popular. Bands like Rammstein or Iron maiden don't get much air time either but they still sell out stadiums.
This is by far my favorite Daft Punk album, I loved everyone before this one too. Given their background in samplers and synthesis, this album only solidifies their talent as recording artists, composers and producers. The quality of sound is second to none. To all the doubters, haters and none believers, please open your ears, mind and <3.
Wow, I used to listen to Daft Punk all the time, I loved their older stuff. I just listened to "Get Lucky" from OP and holy crap it sounds terrible =(

Tell me again which song on the album Justin Bieber is capable of singing? A vocoder makes you sound robotic, but it's not autotune. I guess he could be in one of the choruses.

Checking Wikipedia, there were apparently 25 (!!!) producers on that kid's last album, including e.g. electronic music producers Diplo and Zedd. For a pop star that big you tend to have high powered producers ensuring that the image & voice of the star are backed up by catchy/trendy music for maximum revenue.
Other than the vocals, the music has long ceased to be about the kid's 'songwriting skills' I would suspect...
Not sure whether the quoted person was suggesting the tracks could have been written by his pop army, though.

I get the feeling that if Justin Bieber put out the exact same song with a robot voice, all those same people would be calling it the worst crap they have ever heard...meh, what can you do
Listening to the album right now, its great, don't know if its a 'classic' but I guess time will tell. So refreshing to hear electronic music that doesn't have 'dropping the bass' in it
Tell me again which song on the album Justin Bieber is capable of singing? A vocoder makes you sound robotic, but it's not autotune. I guess he could be in one of the choruses.
Checking Wikipedia, there were apparently 25 (!!!) producers on that kid's last album, including e.g. electronic music producers Diplo and Zedd. For a pop star that big you tend to have high powered producers ensuring that the image & voice of the star are backed up by catchy/trendy music for maximum revenue.
Other than the vocals, the music has long ceased to be about the kid's 'songwriting skills' I would suspect...

Nah man, I didn't say Bieber could write a song from this album. There is just too much hype around them (Daft Punk) that people just assume that the songs are good, it doesn't have to be Beiber, and it doesn't have to be the whole album. One song. Gotye for example:
A great song and all he does is talk into the mic. I seriously hope you guys don't read this wrong but anyone can talk into a mic and have 26 producers come up with a 80's electro-pop background, but would they get the immediate critical acclaim Daft got? (and 32 pages about how good it is on TL?)
Well, I understood that post to point to how expectations influence how we appreciate something.
This is especially true for songs that require several listens to appreciate. If you're already a fan, you'll be quicker to give it another chance / forgive 'puzzling' or 'weak' elements. If it's a track by someone that's cool to hate, you'll be more willing to 'ragequit' on the song halfway through, remember only the weak elements, and pat yourself on the back for having 'higher taste'.
Very few people are that knowledgeable about music to be good/not that biased critics, not to mention art criticism is all sorts of subjective anyway.
The impact of an album years down the road has a lot to say about how good it was, so it's a bit early to tell...
Edit: With my comments on Bieber I was making a different point: he's the image/vocalist for a big pop machine & his influence on the writing/production of his albums is probably miniscule at this point.
Giorgio by Moroder is really, really good. I've never listened much to Daft Punk before Random Access Memories, but I've really enjoyed what I've heard so far.

Discovery is one of the greatest albums of all time
didnt like any song except the single. but to be fair I only liked their stuff until the tron stuff. it kinda lost its happy catchyness for me. But opinions differ I guess
Dont see how someone can like Discover or Human After All and then not like RAM, it's sort of a mix of the two, with the same emotional vibe as Discovery.
I've listened to the album at least 4 times in the past 2 days, needless to say I love it. Touch is a bit too long for me but everything else is great. Give Life Back to Music, Giorgio, and Contact are the gems for me.
I'm not sure if I like it more than Discovery but it's close.
I honestly had to listen about 3-4x to those Songs in order to decide whether I like it or not. And damn, I really love it now. Giorgio is insane, after 5mins it gets so intense, awesomesauce, Contact is one of the best end-of-album tracks I heard in the last years and Doin' it right is my fell-good track of the summer.
I love this album. Everything sounds perfectly refined. What's special to me is the robotic voices that are JUST in between human/robot. Would have loved a version of Giorgio without him talking though.
Yeah, sometimes some of the erm... less musical sounds are a bit disruptive to the experience, e.g. water in Motherboard, the fuzz at the end of Contact (though cool, not exactly chill listening).

I think it works both ways... Considering how popular and liked Daft Punk was, I think there was a lot of people expecting the album to be bad, or even getting disappointed because of their high expectation. (and i'm not even mentioning the hipster effect!)
I think it's kinda rare (especially on the internet) that the overall reaction to a new popular album/movie/game is "good".

I don't know if you noticed that "his talking", they made it sing. They synched the speech to the music and also I think the intonation is related to the melody playing in the background, I have no idea how the achieved that effect

I particularly love "Touch" and "Instant Crush" (love as in "I can play these songs on repeat and not get bored for hours at an end"). Touch has a very nice musical/OST feeling to it and "instant crush" is just a very typical daft punk song. "Get Lucky" is pretty much the most straightforward song on the whole album, together with "Fragments of Time" and I find both of them a bit boring.
If I had to describe this album in a single word, it'd be "relax". For me, this is the kind of music I relax to after a day's work or school - which is actually what I'm doing now. Some songs wouldn't be out of place on a meditation CD (e.g. "motherboard"). It's still Daft Punk through and through, just a lot more mature, a lot less in-your-face and more varied.
Edit: "contact" is pretty good as well, and could be a song written by 65daysofstatic. Very similar in style.
I didn't really like 'touch' at all, and 'instant crush' overall is good but i really don't like the intro of it... just sounds terrible. This album is not for me. Thank you for helping me out. Those who do like it, plz enjoy and f**k off.
Am I the only one who found it really watered down and poppy? Or did they always do it like this and I only happend to listen to their less know songs? (Da Funk, Television, Derezzed, Technelogic ect.)
I personally love all the songs on the album. Fragments of time is one of my favorites on the album. I don't really get it why a lot of people don't like that song .

Nope. I'm listening to Discovery right now and RAM has more depth/complexity. It's just hidden behind a layer of singing sadly enough :/

Discovery was both a much more complex and a much more innovative album than RAM is. There's some great songs on RAM and its much more polished than discovery was, but discovery was a cohesive album, with a new sound. RAM lacks direction and is more of a collection than an album.
Some of the tracks where they manage to actually create a partially new sound (lose yourself, get lucky, instant crush, giorgio), but others are either pretty much copies of what others are doing already. There's plenty of tracks like Beyond, Motherboard, Doin' It Right made by other bands, and as awesome as contact is its a track that fits better on discovery or even human after all than it does on this album (apparantly they made it in 2001-2002 anyhow).
I think they went overboard with the whole 'wanting to change dance music' thing, they already stood miles apart from what everyone else was doing. Sure, there's no denying that their alive 2007 tour had a major impact on dance and liveshows, and that everyone is trying to copy that style, but their albums were never like that in the first place. All in all, I'm kind of disappointed with the album now, there's some tracks that I love but I can't say I love the album anymore.

In your opinion. I completely disagree. I think RAM is more cohesive, with a twist/combination of old sounds. RAM tells a fascinating story, from start to finish.

Huh? What the hell are talking about internet fame? Oh well, enjoy listening to the album in your mom's basement, weirdo.
And thanks, other guy, for the price correction. My bad on that one. I'm more concerned with the quality of the music than the price, though, because I never want to hear "Get Lucky" again. Not for $11.99 (iTunes), not for free.
Edit in reference to below, since it's not worth an actual post: Let's not argue semantics that simple, please. I think that what I'm saying is clear enough.
wow your a douche.
Good easy listening and really good to chill and ladder away while the album plays..
I don't understand why people bother giving attention to the attention seeker, just ignore them and move on. Especially when it was made obvious near the beginning that he was an ignorant dick.
I couldnt imagine the day when I praise Daft Punk's lyric. But damn if Instant Crush is not some of the most profound one that I could totally relate to
This new album had a kinda weird effect on me. At first i wasn't really fully pleased,i felt something was left you,but i kept listening it more and more and today i love it. I don't like only a few track (02-Game of love, too slow killmenow.png 04.Within,can't stand it and 10-Motherboard,dunno why it feels wrong )

All the other tracks are great, really.
I felt exactly the same way, except Motherboard was my favorite song on the first listen and I still really like it. It is not what I expected at all, even after the single was released, and that is why i think it takes a few times to really get into it. Now i think it is one of the best albums to come out in years, and i hope that it inspires a whole new genere of prog-disco!
The album is incredible BAD. And not because "omg this is not daft punk" "omg I was expecting something else". No. It's just ... BAD without having any expectation.

Relax, take it easy for there is nothing we can do
If I start the album with track 3 everything is good. "Give life back to music" and "the game of love" are just not mine but afterwards it's a wonderful album to relax to. I love "Giorgio by Moroder" but "Touch" and "Contact" aren't too far behind.
Pretty disappointing. Half of it sounds like any other Daft Punk album, the other half is just melodies taken from other songs with the intention of letting nobody notice.
the track get lucky came on on the radio before I knew it was daft punk. The radio presenter prefaced it by saying 'this is such a tune!' and I was like o.O what the fuck is this shit, some mid 90's retro disco bullshit? But I did find it was pretty catchy and then the vocoder appeared and I was like oh right it's DP, this vocoder part is pretty coo'
I've listened through a couple times, wow, this album is in my opinion their best apart from Discovery, Giorgio by Moroder, Lose Yourself to Dance, and Instant Crush are all amazing and the album version of Get Lucky is far more enjoyable than the radio edit. The guitar playing throughout the album is phenomenal and the influences from other genres they use are really well placed.
To anyone who is saying that they prefer DP's 'older stuff' all I can say is that you can't have really listened to DP too much, half of Random Access Memories is totally reminiscent of older songs like Face to Face, Too Long and Digital Love which, again in my opinion, are some of their best.
I've currently got the album as 5 stars in iTunes and I have to say I'm glad they didn't go back to making songs that sound just like their old ones (progression is good, no matter how good Discovery, Human After All and Homework were).
I listened to the album a few times and didn't like it much. My favourite song is the fan remix of get lucky where it sounds like michael jackson. Actually, I found the covers way better than anything on the actual album lol, so I guess I like it via proxy? It'll never top the 2 hour music video they made with Disney a few years back though.
I fucking love Madeon...what's he trying to say here? A bunch of Daft Punk's music uses samples from older obscure songs; I don't find it difficult to believe that they'd adapt something to play with real instruments as well.

About the Daft Punk album, has anyone else noticed the relationship between Touch and Get Lucky (same tempo, key and chord progression) ?

Also I'm not that surprised by the similarities between Touch and Get Lucky. The whole album flows musically and thematically. If you watch Chilly's episode of the collaborator series, he mentions using a song or piece of a song to bridge from the previous theme/key to the new song (it's the intro section of Within, which he plays in the episode). Touch and Get Lucky naturally connect, thematically. I'm not sure what Madeon is getting at.
So you just come into a Daft Punk thread to bash on people who like them?
Everyone who makes music samples others, period. And several much worse than DP.
I like daft punk, I just can't stand when people say stuff like how creative and original they are. Speeding up an obscure disco song isn't creative, it's called being a DJ.

You call us fanboys and link a video explaining how they ripped off songs. That's definitely bashing or attempting to insult people who like them. Whose your favorite artist? Pretty sure I could find evidence that they too ripped off a couple songs with their stuff too. Everyone does it, it's the name of the game. There's also only so many catchy rhythms, it's bound to get copied or changed to create something new.
Just bought the album. Really digging it. Favourite songs are "Touch" (more specifically, around 5:45 and on) and "Contact". "Motherboard" takes a close third. I don't buy a lot of music (I just wait for it to be on Rdio) but this seems like money well spent. It will get a lot of play in my car.
I don't know if it is just me but it seems like the sound quality is so much better than the preview was.

I mainly listen to metal. I have a lot of really great albums, and some songs on those probably have riffs on them that were ripped off/heavily inspired by others.
In classical music, composers did this all the time. However, back in the day, that was considered a hommage or a playful reference, not "ripping off an artist".
The fact that Daft Punk sampled parts of old, obscure disco songs doesn't take away from how good this album really is.
I like the album, dont get me wrong, but I'm with others wondering what everyone is on about them being so creative and whatever. (to be clear, there's a lot of hype around this album even in my own social circles, let alone the rest of the net) It sounds a lot like the kind of music my mom would always play in the car (disco, oldies, etc), which is again good music, I just dont see the big deal.
It's odd that people hear the funk/boogie feel of the album and just equate it to being derivative or narrow. I also highly doubt Madeon would be criticizing Daft Punk for having a song that sounded similar to another one of their own. That would open him up to (negative) criticism that his own songs all sound very, very similar to one another.
On the topic of Madeon, it was merely something he noticed, and found interesting. Other twitter posts are praising the album, obviously would not insult daft punk.
On the topic of the album, I am one of those who was not blown away after the first listen, but who now loves it. I think I just expected Discovery or something, but I am now glad that the album is what it is. To be perfectly honest it has gotten to the stage where I am surprised that people dislike it. But again, that probably boils down to expectations
Nothing wrong with using samples, but DP just rip entire grooves (including all instruments). I like their music, don't get me wrong. But the whole vibe of the song is exactly the same. And I wouldn't have a problem with it if at least the public knows that they didn't just make these songs from scatch (and therefore are brilliant, which is the general consensus). If George Duke would re-release this song as a 2013 remix people would probably bash it, now it's suddenly great cos these guys wear helmets.
Sampling demonized in electronic music... What happened?
Is it because the album is popular, and people want to put them (and many other artists) on blast for "copying" now? There are lots of huge names in EDM right now that sample heavily and I haven't heard any outcry.
I think the random 'omg Daft Punk uses samples' post got some wires crossed here. Madeon's comment wasn't criticism, it was an observation of an interesting/not immediately obvious parallel between two neighboring tracks in an album, which can only speak to better album cohesion as far as I'm concerned.

I'm sorry to insult you but you are an idiot if you think Duke can re-release his album remix and have it compared to the success that Daft Punk had with the sample that they took from his song. You are crediting Daft Punks success on the song due to their helmets? what?
It is also idiotic to imply that Daft Punk its trying to act as if they made all songs from scratch. Just because its the general consensus may think that, it doesnt mean they are guilty in trying secretly sample music. Most people are some what educated in what they listen to and know that maybe about 80% of songs today are inspired by old songs or samples and about 90% of EDM is based of samples of other music.
It's also even more idiotic to say that " the entire vibe is the same " from the song because of a sample. The additions they made into the song change it completely, its almost to say "hey, you enjoy DP? Listen to the song they sampled it from its just as good !" which is completely wrong. The only way you can say its giving you the same vibe is if you are being ignorant to the entire song.

I REALLY like Touch. Something deep is going on here and I wish i could get to the bottom of it.
Yes the whole album is meant to be listened as a whole. Check out the Chilly Gonzales vid from The Creators Project, he explains things about progression, how the piano part at the beginning of Within is made to make transition between the first 3 songs (same chord) and Within, etc.
Don't really understand why this album is getting so much space everywhere... yeah it's Daft Punk, whoop de doo, the album is pretty mediocre. Not that Daft Punk has ever been amazing, but this is IMO far worse than their old stuff. It's not that it's "bad" per se, but it's not good and it's not interesting. The album is just... boring to listen to. I'm quite confident if it wasn't Daft Punk, it would have been ignored and forgotten.

i would have never thought that song was made entirely from samples but man they did a great job with it ! very impressive
I can't see the video cause it's blocked at my work, but I'm guessing that's the video of a dude recreating Smack my Bitch up in Abelton?
That's an example of some awesome shit you can do with samples, how you can manipulate them in such a way that they become their own instrument. The video I posted was an example of some lame shit you can do with samples.

After my first full listening, I can't say I like it either. I hope some of the artistry grows on me, but mostly it feels disconnected and bland. I enjoyed their golden era of production with Discovery, so it's hard for me to let go of that, while ignoring "Homework" and "RAM."

Look at each song individually, as an album its okay, but when you give each song a listen and judge it on its own. Well that is when they truly shine. Listen to the ones you like not the ones Daft Punk made.

I love the harmony of an album composed for the names of the tracks, the theme of the work, and the progression of each song as a whole listening experience.
Metal does this well, and that's a reason why metal fanatics can be so proud in the face of degradation and ridicule.

Really?
Maybe you should reevaluate your position on musical appreciation.
I feel like this album brings something to the table everyone can enjoy. If you want to characterize this as "struggling to identify with the masses" I think you're missing the point. Consider the amount of money Daft Punk must have accumulated given their career. Do they really have any motivation to be grovelling at the ears of anyone? I think this album - like their idea of music in general - is supposed to bring people together. The message is that music is inclusive, not exclusive. I don't think it's wrong for musicians to want people to identify with their work. I don't know if you are a musician or not, but if your perspective is that your music should only be appreciated by a select group of elite or qualified individuals you probably won't get very many fans.
It's fine if you don't like some of the songs or even the whole album, but if your reason for disliking it is that they are trying to identify with people I don't think you quite understand the concept.

Daft Punk's "Discovery" honestly was a true random pick-up for me as a child. I was in the store, and I wanted to get anything. I came home with it and absolutely loved the discovery. This album isn't the same for me, it's pace is all disjointed, it has too many artistic voices included, and it's overall boring.

I agree with you Discovery was a great album and if questioned I would quickly place it in my top five favorite albums of all time to this day. My friend had a good point about this - if Daft Punk wanted to make another Discovery, or re re invent EDM again they probably would have. I think this album is very different for a reason. It's something new, while at the same time retaining and reverencing a multiplicitous menagerie of the past. I don't see how you could think it boring - but that is your opinion. If anything - I think the pandora of musical presence only adds to the tempo of the album. It did not seem at all disjointed to me. Remember, Daft Punk is drawing from their manifold experience for this work. They have done everything from scrupulously authentic House to Movie Soundtracks. I think their multifarious array of musical experience is what really makes the album here. Again - this is all opinion.
After listening to the full album i cant believe they made this stuff, it just doesnt suit their style. I was really hyped for the album after that 20 sec ad on SNL, but now i am just dissappointed.
Discovery sounded so good, because they sampled music from real disco bands. With this album they decided they were gonna try and recreate that style but record everything themselves and with studio musicians. Unfortunately, the final product is kind of bland and soulless (in my opinion), as it's hard to recreate the feeling of a real band with studio musicians who don't really play together.
So many tracks are ruined by something: track 12, doin' it right(great start), by the the awful singing. Track 13 by turning into noise halfway. Track 3 by way too much talk. Track 10 by pissing. And track 2, 4, 9 and 11 are just too slow and boring, don't stand out at all, especially compared to a lot of old funk. But I like tracks 5-8. So it's hard to make up my opinion about the whole album.
This album has a very 'pink floyd-ish' vibe imo (listen their 'animals' album to know what I mean).. Songs with chapters, lots of sound effects. I really like giorgio by moroder and contact. The drums are great.. I also like the fact that the general tune of a song stays kind of the same, but the support intstruments/sounds vary a lot.

To be honest, I'm a big fan of metal and I find the lyrics to most metal songs utterly ridiculous (especially in death and black metal). It's a good thing you can't make out what they're "singing" about most of the time. My favourite bands are actually those who combine really good musicianship with good lyrics, like The Ocean, Amenra, Lamb of God, System of a Down, Dark Tranquillity, Gojira, etc.
I do agree on the harmony part. It rarely happens that I do not spin an album from start to finish. When the album is good I will make it to the final track but if it isn't, I will have turned off my CD player without bothering to listen all the way to the end. An album should always be more than the sum of its parts. I don't want three or four good songs on an album, I want all songs to be good. Albums (non-digital) are expensive enough as is.
Daft Punk's RAM has that flow as well, though I can enjoy some songs by themselves as well. It's not an album that I'll spin every week though. Once or twice a month, maybe. The songs are long and rather melancholic so I find it hard to listen to when I'm in a good mood. It's the kind of stuff I'd listen to on a rainy autumn day. It's a good album though, but I find it hard to compare it to their previous ones; it is just too different. Discovery and Human After All were full-out EDM albums but this one lacks the punch and the speed to meet the EDM criterion.

I agree totally. The Omar Hakim drum parts are so brilliant. I guess you pick up a thing or two when you play for Miles Davis.
I dunno....I absolutely loved everything else Ive heard from Daft Punk, but I think this album is only alright. Im listening all the way through for the third time now, and theres a few songs on the album I dont care for (The Game of Love is just...not good). Maybe I came into this with expectations being too high, but Id only rate this one a 6-7 out of 10.
I don't know. I bought the album on release day but it sucks isn't mine. I love the others but... meh.. am i just not old enough to like it? I do understand their influences... but MEH... it it.. ....
