You can probably make a poll on a third party poll website to circumvent the 12 options restriction. And just link to it then.

I'm also not sure if we should use all versions from a series? As in Age of Empires 1, 2, 3 but i.e. only WC 3.

Definitely need to specify instead of list series. It would be a travesty if all Mario games got lumped into one category, because some of the Mario games stand above most other games in the series. (Super Mario bros. III for example)

This might be a crazy idea but why not do the poll by series first and then take the winning series and then have a seperate vote on the best in the series to find the best game?

This would allow people who didn't vote for that particular series as their favourite to have their say about which particular one is best, I think the results would be more inclusive and credible as a result.
