Yeaa, that guy is as likely to reform NK as I am.

Seems like a nice guy but he's not even in the direct line of succession so I don't wouldn't bank on him having any significant effect on North Korea.

I just wanted to point out the irony of critical methodology here, which is intensely North Korean. Instead of regarding virtue as a quality of personality, virtue is now completely bound to your position within the power structures of society. Just like the American Imperialist, who regardless of how much he loves his community, considerate in his manners or modest in appetites is incapable of being virtuous, because he's still an American Imperialist, the North Korean elite is of course simply the North Korean elite in our eyes and nothing more.
That kind of superficial analysis may belong to the fables of social science, normal and sensible people ought to judge in terms of things more substantial.

wow, he really seems to be an intelligent person. One day maybe he'll make a change.

Finally, a thread that truly sums up Teamliquid.

The Mexican-American War gave us some of our most important actual territory. The Spanish-American War beat the last of the Spanish in Latin America and gave us heavy power there to this day. The end of WW2 basically gave us Western Europe and parts of the Far East. The Soviet collapse gave us much of Eastern Europe. Anyone else, like backward Arab dictators and monarchs, we just throw money at them and they wag like dogs. Any countries that don't kneel, we destroy them, like Iraq and Serbia.
Who's next? >: )
Thanks for the laugh
Sorry for the short post, have to go kneeling facing the US of A.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before in this thread but Pol Pot studied in Paris and had many friends and seemed like a cool guy and yet... Became a total monster. The daughter of Stalin escaped.
So we have 2 very opposite situation. One where a person get the chance to see the world, comes back to his country, destroys it. The other, leaving family and everything, grew up her own mind.
We won't know what kind a person this guy is until he has power, if he ever has power.

I don't know anything about Pol Pot, but Svetlana Alliluvyeva was not quite the idealised picture of one of Emma Lazarus' 'tired poor huddled...yearning to breathe free.'
After her defection American propagandists celebrated her in a fashion akin to the defection of Solzhenitsyn. Yet like Solzhenitsyn, Svetlana was never one of them, and became a deeply unsatisfied and unhappy woman in America. Political loyalties do neither beasts nor angels make.

I am living in Korea right now... And regarding this, you can't really trust the North Koreans, they are really secretive and plot ways to take over Korea and possibly more... Wouldn't the North Korean government already do something about the grandson? I mean hes not raised as the normal North Korean brainwashed beliefs...

The Kim family has send children to Switserland before, since they are one of the few nations that don't actively hate them, since they are well known for being neutral all the time.
Also, I presume most of the higher-ups enjoy a more western-education than the masses do. If your the son of a high rank politician or army officer, its likely you will at some point in your life have to deal with the outside world.
It's just that the elite echelons of society are extremely closed off, and also stand to benefit the most.
It creates a circle.
Those that are born into one of political families will not only live a rich life, but also have more power than anywhere else in the world. From a self-serving point of view, they couldn't be in a better position. Not even Bill Gates could just pick a girl of the streets and rape her. A North-Korean official wouldn't face many problems over it.
Meanwhile, the army, the only place where the common man can climb up, is the same insititution that oppresses the people. So, the only way to escape being a victim, is to join the criminals.
Everyone in North-Korea has to take part in its sick system in some fashion. Nobody is exempt.

Perhaps you have to see bigger and wider picture what interviewer does.

He seems like a really articulate young man. If he was truly "an evil demon who lived off of the work of peasants and lived a life of luxury". Why wouldn't he stay in North Korea ? Why would he try to open himself up to the world, when it could only make him realize what a sheltered life he has ? Going to an international school shows that he is interested in the world and people outside of Korea, and I don't know how anyone can think this is a bad thing. Seemed like a nice guy to me O.O
