With the dark news of the recent threats from North Korea to South Korea, let's look at some lighter North Korea news: an interview with Kim Han Sol, the grandson of Kim Jong Il.
http://blogs.wsj.com/korearealtime/2012/10/18/kim-jong-ils-grandson-gives-tv-interview/
So he's a 17 year old teenager schooling in a boarding school in Bosnia, speaks fluent English, and looks like any other South Korean friend I have. He previously had a Facebook and Twitter, but deleted it due to his sudden media publicity when he was accepted to the school. It's fascinating learning how his background and circumstances allowed him to become an articulate, "normal" young man.
I really hope that he will be a key person in uniting the Koreas; hopefully his link to the North Korean dynasty and his interest in humanitarian efforts could help the Koreas out in the future.
Kim Han Sol fighting!~

A year ago there was a media craze when they found he would be moving away from Macau.

I came here expecting something completely different. This young man seems well spoken and well informed. Seems like a nice guy, cant believe Kim Jong Il is his grand father.

His English-speaking ability is pretty incredible too

Hmm reunification of the two Koreas incoming in 20 years?
|
It's really unnerving that his English is so... Standard Korean-American Punk, I could've sworn he was from anywhere in the states and immigrated after he was 14. He even has the girly-boy earring...
I hope he doesn't get detained or executed for showing so much disdain for his home Nation's government... Maybe it was even a ploy to get the North Korean government to disavow him and leave him to his own devices.
|
The guy seems cool and down to earth. I can see peace in the future between the North and the South through this guys future actions. We can only hope for it.

The thing is. Will there still be two different Korea in next 20 years? I honestly don't know :/ But I hope he keep his cool personality IF he becomes the next leader

Uniting North and South Korea isn't important. Stopping all the attacks against South Korea, for no reason, is important. Hell, everyone just generally getting along, instead of this giant fucking world war that everyone is fighting with everyone, and all over dumb shit too, like, religion, location, culture, race, money. Won't ever happen, but I hope this guy can stop at least one fight.
|
Wow that was a really great interview. He seems like a really stand up guy, and hopefully one day he can help with the reunification of the Koreas. It should be interesting for him when he grows up and to see how often him and Jong Un talk/if at all, I wonder if the brothers are close at all O.o.
That was a really great interview, nice to see a unique perspective on things.

I wonder what it must feel like having an uncle who is the leader of one of the worst regimes in human history. It must gnaw at his morals even though none of it is his fault. At least hes mature enough to know whats right and wrong.

I PMd the guy who warned me because I honestly don't know why I was warned, all he said was "dont do this". If it really is the whole switching of Rs and Ls, then im disappointed. I've stood up against racism against Asians (my own race) enough in my own life to be able to recognize real racism from harmless fun.
Edit: I take more offense to people in this entire site claiming to know about Asian culture purely on Koreans' SC2 work ethic than an obviously stupid joke about the pronunciation of Rs or Ls.

All I've seen from him is that he thinks the U.S/U.K are awful, everyone in the west is incredibly biased, that Communism is awesome, that he is for equal rights for all, but life in NK isn't bad (implied via comment that everyone in NK has a cell phone now that only makes calls locally).

How is changing a letter for another to make a joke completely unrelated to his race itself "racism"?
Racism is the hatred for another race or feeling of superiority of a race over another. Referencing a manner of speaking (which stems from differences in languages and not physical differences between races) that is well-known is so far from racism I'm be pressed to find a single person who'd be offended.
Team Liquid thought-police at work. What a case of super hyper sensitivity. Par for the course, I guess. The TL user base is definitely not known for their intelligence.

Your point is incorrect. It's like seeing a black person and slurring all your words in a "ghetto" way, as if all black people speak like that. It's inherently attributing a way of speaking to skin color, which is racism. Racism doesn't have to be negative. Calling Asians smart is racism. In this case, pointing out what some english speakers find funny in the phonography of asian languages, is more of a teasing neutral racism, but racism none the less.
It's less a matter of spite and more a matter of ignorance.

For most Koreans that is the case. I have a Korean professor who has lived in America for fourteen years and teaches Greek to American students. His grasp of English mechanics is better than most of the students he teaches, and yet his l's sound like r's all the time. His intonation is often off as well, and is has nothing to do with being racist. The way Korean phonetics and language works is fundamentally different from western linguistics. It is how it is and trying to coddle everyone so no one gets offended doesn't really help anything.

Now that they know where he is, do you think maybe the cia will kidnap him and use him as hostage to better negotiate with north korea? I mean, the fact that he is in a random place like bosnia seems fishy, almost like they wanted him to be out of the public eye.

Kim Han-sol (Korean: 김한솔, born 16 June 1995) is the eldest son of Kim Jong-nam and the grandson of the former North Korean ruler, Kim Jong-Il. His father was the heir-apparent until 2001, when he fell out of favor with the regime following a failed attempt to secretly visit Japan’s Disneyland in May 2001. His uncle, Kim Jong-un, was named the heir apparent in September 2010, and succeeded Kim Jong-il upon the latter's death in December 2011. [...] In October 2012, Kim made his first ever televised interview with Finnish TV network YLE, making several comments about his desire for Korean reunification, while also criticizing his grandfather's and uncle's rule over North Korea.
Considering this, and since he's lived in Western-oriented Hongkong (former British colony) and Macau (former Portugese colony) for most of his life and is now studying as part of the United World Colleges (UWC) program in Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina (interesting choice), it's fair to assume that he and his family look at things differently.
Anyways, interesting interview. Cute guy. All the best to him.

How odd would it be if there was a North Korean civil war between those who support Kim Han Sol and those who want NK to remain a strict communist nation. It could result in 3 koreas o.o

Strange how it seems like his father was so estranged from Jong Il and was almost hippylike compared to the total cult of personality the Kim family have over North Korea. You would think if you were born directly from a dictator like that, you would try to do everything in your power to be the next head of state. I guess Jong Un was the only one of them who really wanted to be the Leader. Really shows how different siblings can actually be in a powerful family like that I guess.

The two older brothers were not seen fit by iL . One of them, I believe the second oldest had no intentions or "passions" to take the seat thus lazy. The oldest one lost his chance when he was caught with a fake passport in Japan in an attempt to go visit Disney Land (twas arrest and was shipped back) and was branded a "shame" to the family... So yea..the leader won probably by asking one more question than the lazy brother (everyone was skeptical of the new leader because no one knows what his motives are and is a "quiet" person)

Kim Jong Il was relatively westernised compared to his father, as a lover of American pop culture and basketball, not to mention that mongrel attempt at a Pompadour which he calls hair. Ideologically too, he was a more modern leader, although he fell short of the stage presence or charisma of his father. I suspect that the present leader, Kim Jong-un, may be the most Westernised man in North Korea.
|
As singular as the power in North-Korea appears, a single leader will make little difference.
Kim-Jong-Ill bloated the military, and they will be damned if they are going to let some nobody gut their massive budget. They know what it's like to be a North-Korean without a gun, they keep them under control and execute them on a daily basis.
How exactly do you take power from people with guns?
North-Korea is locked in place, unless the military happens to turn democratic.

Seriously, all the warnings and bans are derailing this thread from the actual subject, and onto bashing mods. I agree with most posters, these warnings are pointless, they take away from the object of the thread, and serve only to increase negativity.
Whomever is modding this thread, please go have a nap, and then come back with fresh mind, and less anger.
ONTOPIC: I really hope this (and more openness towards different ideas in NK) will further the relationship between North and South Korea, and help move towards a united KR.

That was an interesting interview.
I tried to work out how close in line he (Han Sol) is to being the supreme leader of NK. The answer appears to be surprisingly close.
If the current leader Kim Jong-un, is assassinated, then as Kim Jong-un has no children, control may pass to Han Sol's father (who was next in line until 2001), and then when his father dies Han Sol is next in line as the eldest child. This may require Han Sol's father to act in a more statesman like way, e.g. give up his dream of attending Disneyland in Japan.
Unfortunately this puts Han Sol's father in a dangerous position. If the military doesn't like the behavior of the current leader, Kim Jong-un they may attempt to assassinate him. The obvious, and sadly frequently implemented, defensive response in these type of situations is for the current leader to kill all obvious successors to leadership, including Han Sol's father, and Han Sol himself.
I feel a little sorry for the guy.

I suppose if by some miracle theres a military uprising in side north korea this guy has a chance to go power and do something in the name of the glorious leader

In the extremely unlikely chance there will be one Korea, that will be very good for US imperialism. We will now dominate the whole Korean peninsula and be right on China's doorstep by land. Things are getting better and better. People hoping for a united Korea are just hoping for the expansion of US power whether they realize it or not, ironically.
The Mexican-American War gave us some of our most important actual territory. The Spanish-American War beat the last of the Spanish in Latin America and gave us heavy power there to this day. The end of WW2 basically gave us Western Europe and parts of the Far East. The Soviet collapse gave us much of Eastern Europe. Anyone else, like backward Arab dictators and monarchs, we just throw money at them and they wag like dogs. Any countries that don't kneel, we destroy them, like Iraq and Serbia.

How are you not warned yet ? ; D
The joke was fine IMO, and I don't think that having a small joke in a serious topic is such a bad thing !

THis is huge news! Really good interview he sounds very sophisticated!
|
Interesting interview! He's quite intelligent for a guy of his age and really hope people won't reject or disapprove of him just because he's the grandson of a dictator. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure there are ignorant people who will. And to be honest, I was shocked when I heard that the interviewer was speaking Swedish with a Finnish accent :D
|
he seems like a well mannered guy, but he's not just some kid. he's a privileged individual who lives off of the benefits of a dictator state that treats it's people like cattle. it's great that he has a wider view of the world than his grandfather likely did. but I doubt he'd have any compassion for the people in his country who suffer and die for his well being.

Yeaa, that guy is as likely to reform NK as I am.

Seems like a nice guy but he's not even in the direct line of succession so I don't wouldn't bank on him having any significant effect on North Korea.

I just wanted to point out the irony of critical methodology here, which is intensely North Korean. Instead of regarding virtue as a quality of personality, virtue is now completely bound to your position within the power structures of society. Just like the American Imperialist, who regardless of how much he loves his community, considerate in his manners or modest in appetites is incapable of being virtuous, because he's still an American Imperialist, the North Korean elite is of course simply the North Korean elite in our eyes and nothing more.
That kind of superficial analysis may belong to the fables of social science, normal and sensible people ought to judge in terms of things more substantial.

wow, he really seems to be an intelligent person. One day maybe he'll make a change.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before in this thread but Pol Pot studied in Paris and had many friends and seemed like a cool guy and yet... Became a total monster. The daughter of Stalin escaped.
So we have 2 very opposite situation. One where a person get the chance to see the world, comes back to his country, destroys it. The other, leaving family and everything, grew up her own mind.
We won't know what kind a person this guy is until he has power, if he ever has power.

I don't know anything about Pol Pot, but Svetlana Alliluvyeva was not quite the idealised picture of one of Emma Lazarus' 'tired poor huddled...yearning to breathe free.'
After her defection American propagandists celebrated her in a fashion akin to the defection of Solzhenitsyn. Yet like Solzhenitsyn, Svetlana was never one of them, and became a deeply unsatisfied and unhappy woman in America. Political loyalties do neither beasts nor angels make.

I am living in Korea right now... And regarding this, you can't really trust the North Koreans, they are really secretive and plot ways to take over Korea and possibly more... Wouldn't the North Korean government already do something about the grandson? I mean hes not raised as the normal North Korean brainwashed beliefs...

The Kim family has send children to Switserland before, since they are one of the few nations that don't actively hate them, since they are well known for being neutral all the time.
Also, I presume most of the higher-ups enjoy a more western-education than the masses do. If your the son of a high rank politician or army officer, its likely you will at some point in your life have to deal with the outside world.
It's just that the elite echelons of society are extremely closed off, and also stand to benefit the most.
It creates a circle.
Those that are born into one of political families will not only live a rich life, but also have more power than anywhere else in the world. From a self-serving point of view, they couldn't be in a better position. Not even Bill Gates could just pick a girl of the streets and rape her. A North-Korean official wouldn't face many problems over it.
Meanwhile, the army, the only place where the common man can climb up, is the same insititution that oppresses the people. So, the only way to escape being a victim, is to join the criminals.
Everyone in North-Korea has to take part in its sick system in some fashion. Nobody is exempt.

very biased. the interviewer is even biased as fuck and its a very one sided interview. sorry but i really dont like the thing at all.

Perhaps you have to see bigger and wider picture what interviewer does.

He seems like a really articulate young man. If he was truly "an evil demon who lived off of the work of peasants and lived a life of luxury". Why wouldn't he stay in North Korea ? Why would he try to open himself up to the world, when it could only make him realize what a sheltered life he has ? Going to an international school shows that he is interested in the world and people outside of Korea, and I don't know how anyone can think this is a bad thing. Seemed like a nice guy to me O.O

It's not suprising that atleast one person in the Jong Il family is relatively normal, it's nice to know someone like him exists in that country.
The problem for North Korea doesn't stem from that family line any more I feel. If anything I believe that the main issue with North Korea is the generals. Kim Jong Un for example is relatively normal compared to his father, but even if he wanted to change anything he wouldn't stand a chance as the generals wouldn't want to lose their seat in power.

Keep in mind Kim Jong Il had other children 2 of which where candidates for succeeding him and then lost favour for Kim Jong Un the youngest son, pretty much for the same reason this grandson will lose favour for succession when the time comes.
As people have said in this thread, the Family doesn't exactly rule North Korea, the "Nobles and Hierarchy" do. The son who can follow the rules will always be the successor.

User was warned for this post Why does that Star Wars joke get warned? Han Solo, hilarious! I don't see anything wrong here. The 'r's That's ridiculous. I've seen pictures by Manit0u in the funny pictures thread making jokes about black people not being able to read and he goes unscathed. I see a thread devoted bashing religion simply because they protest on their own private property about abortion, the creator went unwarned. User was temp banned for this post.
This America(TL whatever.).It is ok to glorify Hitler(you mean guy who killed 30 000 000 people based on their ethnicity?yeah i do. ) but dare to make joke based on pronunciation of your own people. All this in thread where people are amazed that guy who is grand something of "insane-psycho-killler-selfproclamed god" is not "insane-psycho-killler-selfproclamed god" himself.
i quess he, who see racism in everything is probably racist as well.

I'm looking forward to being banned for this post. I just can't help but point out the irony of the moderators of the biggest SC2 site, a war strategy game, being the biggest pussies on the face of the earth. Grow a fucking spine you dumb apes, or perhaps expand your humor to include light hearted jokes. You even ban people for blunt criticism. Let's nerf the world and promote a war game! It doesn't make sense. Hahaha.

This is no longer a discussion about KJI's grandson, it is a referendum on the strictness of TL moderation. Mods, please change the topic title accordingly if you insist on making it so. Every single day people criticize the moderation on TL openly *not in PM* and don't get banned or warned for it, but all the sudden one of you got your panties in a bunch about it so you are letting the warn/banhammer fly. You're thinking you're trying to prove a point and set a precedent, but all you're doing is proving you are the asshole that just can't let it go, as everyone is thinking you are. You're like the riot police officer that got insulted and someone flipped him the bird, then he starts creating reasons for mass arrest.
Consider this post me sitting down with my arms locked with the rest of the people who speak their mind in this thread. Pepper spray me and arrest me all you want, you've already proven how mature you are.
