Yeah man - this one time I asked a rich guy to trade his Aston Martin V12 Vanquish for my wind up race car. He declined? Imean what gives? They're both cars. Whats the V12's wheels roll better or something?

I know this post is a little late, but...
TOUCHDOWN!!!!!!!
Bravo human race, awesome stuff =D

The new rover has research tools that put the other two rovers to shame.

YEAAA GO HUMANITY!
so many tears of joy this morning.

People raging about a 2.5 billion Dollar Mars rover which was developed for 10 Years, but not caring about the 2 Billion Dollars spent by the US military each day...

You're looking at it wrong. It's powered by plutonium!

Well, tomorrow is where we find out the real info. Today was success, tomorrow its back to work for those geniuses at NASA! I'm really curious to see exactly where it landed, and how close to optimal of a landing location it could have been. Maybe a HD picture or two, and my curiosity(damn that name is too good) will be sated for awhile.
Fuck yea humanity!

You don't have to go to mars to find that and it's not even in the top 100 list of interesting things they could find.

Science and exploration is cool and all, but stuff was way more fun when it was all just an excuse to rub it into Soviet faces.

We know of a planet thats made almost completely out of diamonds.
Better plot a course.

Wrong. Its been done before so there is nothing to achieve. They will get more accurate data on some dirt and the air. Yay. While I don't begrudge it happening I fail to see why so many people in this thread are excited about something that has been done before.
Yes the USA should put their military budget into NASA and get some real progress. But this isn't progress. Progress would mean something new happens. 20 rovers on mars isn't progress. A thousand robots on mars just means we are really good at polluting two planets now.
So yes if you are a scientist this would be interesting. I love the idea of exploring space but missions like this kill any belief it will ever happen. Put a man back on the moon! Then worry about mars.

If your arguments are to be taken seriously, then getting back on the Moon is just as meaningless as this. NASA has said it themselves previously, but getting back to the Moon isn't a priority right now as it's too expensive compared to what we would gain from it. Getting a car-sized lab on Mars is another thing though.

If we're gonna go back to the moon we would need to get to the dark side of the moon to find anything of interest.

Anyone know what happens to the skycrane when it flies away?

It flies FAR away.
Its gone, forget about it. In a few hundreds years someone will go get it and put it in a museum.

I assume once its cleared the landing area by a decent amount the engines will cut out and it will crash land onto the surface.
