I'll try to translate this interview with one of the guys that was on the island during the massacre, that he did with a Swedish paper.
Edit: Sorry, the interview was made with a Norweigan paper, but it was also published in a Swedish one.
"Thorbjørn Veriede was together with his friends when the uniformed man suddently arrived and attracted all the youths. - It's safe to come out. You will be saved. I'm from the police, he said. Then he started shooting. - We were 30-40 when he started shooting. When he was done, five or six of us still stood up, Thorbjorn tells VG. He has terrible "memory images" of the shooter, calmly shooting most of the victims twice, to make sure that they were dead.
- He didn't seem to care about the situation, Vereide tells VG. When an emergency boat came to save them, he didn't want to jump aboard. He had problems trusting people after being fired at, by a fake police officer. He hopes to be able to meet some of the survivors and talk about what happend. - It's terrible. I've talked to some of my friends at the hotel and they told me they've seen their best friend be shot in the head right infront of them."
Sorry for any spelling misstakes, if there's something you don't understand, just ask. Tried to do it quickly, not in the best mental state either.

I'm torn between sadness and anger. Why did those children have to die?
I can somewhat understand political fundamentalism, because our world is used to that. But why the kids?....
My very sincere condolences.

im lacking the connection between his intention and why he chose those young people? Or ist it really just they key to bring his message out due to media interest?

By reading his book I´ve found a reason, it´s very illogical however.
He simply thought that everyone who was a part of the multicultural establishment was his enemy and must be disposed of.

They were the future generation of his political opposition. What better target was there for him to maximize his impact?

The kids were at a summer camp organized by the Youth Wing of the Norwegian Labour Party, which is the major party in the current ruling coalition and the party of the Prime Minister - Jens Stoltenberg.
The killer seems to have some kind of hatred towards this party and its Youth Wing, calling them "Stoltenberg-Jugend". In addition, I guess the location made operational sense...

They are the future government.

Correct. Found this in the book:
All that, however, is barely noticeable compared to the sacrifices made in relation to the distribution of this book, the actual marketing operation;)

I know this might sound kinda weird now but considering what absolutely horrible thing he did in order to get attention one might think what he has to tell is signifcant, important or maybe even enlightening. I try to find some kind of logic behind this but come on. Muslim is a religion with individuals he is writing as if there is a movement in which every individual is basicaly trying to destroy europe by making it multicultural. I mean tell me what he writes is just nonsense, isnt it.
Oh well one can barely say this guy has some kind of psychic damage when he wrote this all up and does this. Its just blood cold murder in order to spread an idea..

In Norwegian, if you run it thrugh google translate it may make some sense. Basically, it is assumed he may have had to change magazine in his MP5 upto 20 times and that he killed one youth a minute before surrendering.

You can safely assume this person planned all of this very, very thoroughly. He hates "marxists" and is obsessed by the idea that Norway is somehow controlled by "marxists", the youths obviously are "marxists" for him. And well, 13-17y.o.s will likely not try to overwhelm him. The camp being on an island makes all of this a "perfect target" for the sick mind of his.
