I will be in the UK, specifically Northern Ireland, for about a month in a few weeks. I kind of wanted to work and earn some money during that time, but it seems that to be legally able to do that, i need a national insurance number. But from what i can figure out, the only way to get one is to apply while being there, and then it may take a few months to process.

So is there just no way to do a one month vacation job? Or is there some other way of doing this?

I am a German/EU citizen if that is relevant.

I know that this is possibly not a stupid question, but i have no idea how to figure this stuff out.

Google the city/region name + job centre or department of employment or department of labour (terminology differs), go to the website of a relevant institution like that, find the contact section.

Then mail them or preferably call them and ask that question, even if it isn't the right place they should be able to direct you to some public service that can give you a proper answer.

The lady my girlfriend works (unpaid) for seems to think that i require a national insurance number, and as i said, getting one seems to require being in the UK and waiting for a period between two weeks and a few months. Which would make going there and working for a month impossible if i want to get paid. Apparently you can work while waiting for the number, but it would still be complicated.

Do you have other information?

first off, romanians took er jerbss; second, my sister waited for about a month until her papers came and then she could work(couple years back).
that insurance number is kinda required.

Is there a way to donate my pubes like how people donate their hair for wigs? I'd like to do some good for the world by donating my pubes to be made into a wig for some poor child who can't grow hair.

hmm good theory, now do we have anyone with expertise in the subject. And if so please explain your expertise!

I doubt that that is the case. Without doing any calculations, i would assume that the effect of the temperature of the gas is basically neglectable. There can't be more than a few degrees Celsius in difference between different types of farts. And that would mean that the effect of that on the spreading of the gas is not relevant when compared to outside effects like air currents in the room you are in.

In fact, i would actually doubt that there is a large difference in the real temperature of farts at all. All of them come out of your intestine, so i would assume that their temperature on exit is pretty close to your interior body temperature of 37°. There might be an effect of fermentation heating them inside of you, but then that heat should be dissipated pretty quickly throughout you body by your bodily fluids.

As such, i think the way the question was originally asked is correct, and we should focus on them feeling hotter. And this leads to my theory:

Water(or other stuff) in the fart air. If you ever were in a Sauna, you know that it feels a lot hotter after someone threw some water on the hot stones. The reason for this is simple. Air isn't very good at transferring energy, but the more stuff with high heat capacity is in the air, the more this changes. Your body doesn't feel temperature, it feels heat energy transference. Something feels hotter the more heat energy it transfers to your body, and it feels colder the more heat energy it takes out of your body. (Another example: This is why a piece of metal in winter feels a lot more cold than the air, despite being at the same temperature.)

The outside of your body is at a lower temperature than the inside. So if we assume that all farts are at core body temperature, but some feel hotter than others on exit, the reason for that can be that the "hotter" farts have more water (and other particles) in them. Which would also explain why they smell worse.

Another, more boring explanation would be that it is something along the lines of the burning feeling you get on exit after eating chili, which is not in any way related to temperature. But that is boring.

Regarding my credentials, i study physics at university with the goal of becoming a high-school teacher. I am nearly done with my studies and am pretty confident in my knowledge of basic thermodynamics.

Another EU citizen in the UK here, you need to be in the UK to apply for the number yup. For me it took about 2 weeks to get a meeting where they ask that you are who you said you are in the phone and then you can start to work. Took about 2 or 3 more weeks to get the actual number but you can work in the meanwhile.

Okay, i am majorly pissed of right now. The lady i talked to at UK jobcentre is utterly incapable. She told me a) that it would take about two months to get a NINO, and that they don't send those abroad. She told me b) That i don't need a NINO if i work for less than 12 weeks. I asked for where to find confirmation about this that i could show my potential employer. She said the gov.uk website (And she took about 1 minute to dictate those 6 symbols. I am not kidding about this.) Then i asked where on that website, as i didn't find it. She told me to look up "Working in the UK without a national insurance number". I did that. I didn't find anything. She told me she would look it up, and needed apparently 5 minutes to load the government website. She then quoted to me a paragraph that had nothing to do with my question or her answer:

Working without a National Insurance number

You can start work before your National Insurance number arrives if you can prove you can work in the UK. You should tell your employer that you’ve applied for one, and give it to them when you have it.

Which is clearly not what she told me before, and which clearly does not help me in any way, as it still demands that i apply for a NINO. I told her this. She then told me to hold while she searched the website. Which i did. At this point i have been holding and talking to this lady for about 25 minutes, and i don't even want to know how much that costs me from abroad. Eventually she gives me a different website, where i need to fill out a questionaire, and claims that at the end, it will tell me what she told me before.

https://www.gov.uk/legal-right-work-uk/

I ask her if she can stay with me while i try this out. She says no, she is not allowed to talk to me for longer than 5 minutes. So i tell her "okay, thanks, bye". I fill out the literally 4 questions, but am sadly done only shortly after she hung up. And it says nothing along the lines of what she just told me. It tells me that my passport enables me to work in the UK, which i already knew. It does not solve the fucking NINO problem i had. And now i apparently have to call again and wait in queue again for 20 minutes before talking to the next person. I am fucking pissed off now.

After venting, this is my question: Can anyone help me with this shit? Does this 12 week rule actually exist, or did this lady just make that up? If it does exist, can anyone provide a link? I just want to work for 4 weeks while in the UK, these bureaucratic hurdles are fucking annoying to deal with, and that lady did not seem to have either any idea what she was talking about, or any interest in helping me whatsoever.

I'm going to do my best.
I'm at work so I'll have to find out what I can between working haha.
ok so this website seems to have fairly simple info:
https://www.transfergo.com/en/blog/moving-uk/apply-national-insurance-number/

Who needs a national insurance number?

Anyone who works in the UK or intends to work must have an NI number.
An NI is sometimes referred to as a ‘social security number’ in the UK
You must have the right to work or study in the UK in order to apply for and receive a NI number. This applies to EU citizens as well.
Employers will always ask for your number before you start work. (Note that you do not have to have a NI card. The number alone is sufficient.)
Contribution will be taken each time you are paid.
You can only apply for a NI number once you arrive in the UK.
It is possible to apply for an NI number once you have taken or been offered a job. Sending any job documentation with your application can speed the process. You will pay emergency tax, which is greater than the normal contribution, until the NI is issued.
NI numbers do not expire. Once issued the number remains valid even if you leave the country for extended periods of time.

What do I need a national insurance number for?

Anyone coming to the UK to work will need to apply for an NI number. NI numbers are automatically sent to British Citizens when they turn 16.

The application process starts by calling the Job Centre Plus number and making an appointment. The lines are often quite busy so it is best to be prepared for long on-hold times.

Once connected the representative will set up an Evidence of Identity Hearing at a local Job Centre Plus office. The appointment for a hearing may be up to several months away. Even though you may not need all of them, you should be prepared to bring the following documents with you to the hearing.

Passport or identity card
Residence permit
Birth or adoption certificate
Marriage or civil partnership certificate
Driving license
An account of previous work experience
Information on when and how you arrived in the UK

Applicants will be told at the hearing the approximate wait time to receive their number. This can be as little as two weeks to several months.

Alternative Application Methods

Often those newly arriving in the UK face certain problems when applying for their NI number. One of the most common is the lack of a permanent address as living arrangements may not have been finalised. Since the card and number is sent by post this can result in delays due to lost or misdirected mail.

There are a number of services throughout the UK that will help new UK residents obtain their NI number such as 1st Contact. For a relatively small fee (usually around £30) the company will help the applicant with proving their identity, work with the applicant throughout the process and ensure they receive the card if they change address or workplace. Often the services are able to bypass the Evidence of Identity Hearing, although the same documentation will be needed. The services usually promise that the card will be issued with four-to-eight weeks after the identity hearing.

Is this helpful?

If there's any other questions you need answering I can ring the helpline near me and ask them. I also have a friend (acquaintance) who works for the DWP who might be able to help.

It looks like, given that you'll be working for such a short time, you might have to resign yourself to getting ermergency taxed. This is a high tax rate given to people who have failed to provide their details/ or don't have an NI number.
Emergency tax is horrible, most UK workers have had to deal with it at some point. You can claim this tax back from the UK government once the tax year has ended and you have a p60 (end of year tax statement).

You should be aware that our government wants this situation to be a horrible nightmare for you. Their immigration policy is to let people come here - whether permanent or temporary - but make life as difficult and frustrating as possible once you are here.
I would advise trying to be as organized about documents and things like this as you can possibly be.

Finally, here's some information on emergency tax:
http://yourtaxrefund.co.uk/tax-advice/what-is-emergency-tax/
E
mergency tax tends to happen when HMRC don’t have the correct or sufficient information about you and your income and tax details. As they don’t have the information they need, the correct tax code that you should be on will be unavailable – which means you will be issued with an emergency tax code.

When you leave a job you should be issued with a P45, which shows how much you’ve been paid and how much you’ve been taxed so far in the current tax year. The P45 will also provide your tax code – which is needed by your new employer. If you are not given a P45, or fail to give it to your new employer, then an emergency tax code will have to be used until your employer finds out what tax code you should be on.

Tax refunds
Tax returns
Why do I have an emergency tax code?

There are several reasons why you may have been issued with an emergency tax code, including…

You have just started a new job and haven’t received a P45 from your previous employer

You have just started your first job

You have just started in PAYE employment after being self-employed

You have just begun to receive taxable company benefits like a company car

You have just started getting the State Pension

How can I tell if I am on an emergency tax code?

The first anyone ever tends to know they are on an emergency tax code is when they first get paid and they realise they are paying much more tax than before.

If you suspect you have been put on an emergency tax code then you can find out for sure by checking your payslip. If the tax code listed on the pay slip is any of the below then you are being emergency taxed:

1100L W1

1100L M1

1100L X

BR (20% tax)

0T (40% tax)

What to do if you are on emergency tax

If you are on any of the above emergency tax codes then you will need to provide your new employer with a P45 or details of your previous income and tax payments. Once this has been submitted HMRC will send out a PAYE Coding Notice which will list your new tax code, which should then be on the next payslip you receive from your employer.

I think it's because they're more humid, therefore they exchange heat faster (and thus feel hotter), and at the same time the water carries some shit particles with it making it stinkier.
