England: People believe everything in the media without thinking for even a second. Its true what that guy said about everyone being scared of or scared of being accused of a pedo/molester. Walking a street at night you are shit scared whenever anyone walks past, especially groups of young men. 50% of people (townies) on a night out adopt this super macho persona where they will shout at random strangers and threaten to knife you just for the thrill of it. Sooo many times I've considered keeping a knife on me or at least in my room incase some violent drunk tries to batter my door down. I feel bad walking behind women because I always get the impression they think I'm a rapist. Um but maybe that's just me :3 The townie/chav culture is into 2nd generation now, which means the alcoholic jobless aggressive tracksuit-wearing kids now have alcoholic jobless aggressive tracksuit-wearing kids of their own. You will see tracksuit/hoodie-wearing people aged 25+ and later get attacked by their 13 year old kids at a bus station. Trying to get a job is hell. You get paid £5.80/hour (a mcdonalds is £5) and there are so many people who want your job you're expected to take EVERY sort of shit and abuse else you get fired. I just quit my new job after 2 shifts because it was simply rediculous and the woman wouldn't even let me talk to her about anything, she just says "I don't want any excuses, you do what you're told and do it immediately or I'll fire you and find someone else". And this is me trying to TALK to her AFTER being absolutely PERFECT in every way. Rich people abuse the benefits system. They buy a house and rent out TINY DIRTY rooms to jobless people on benefits, charging £92/week because the government will cover that much. It means that when you actually get a job you have to move out because £92/week is fucking crazy - or you just don't notify the government that you've got a job and start abusing the system yourself. At least until you can afford a security deposit to move into a new place with. People are funnelled into university like you can't imagine. Many of the 1st year courses are 20x easier than A Levels (easier than GCSEs actually) and many kids just spend their £3k borrowed money on booze and drugs then drop out, or wait till they get the next £900 then drop out, now with £7k total debt or whatever. Girls/women are 90% overweight. Which leads me to.. The culture of food is unlike anything you can imagine. Where I live there are around 14 fish-n-chip shops within 10 mins walking distance, and 1 chinese place that costs £7/meal presumeably because eveyones too busy scoffing chips to bother going there. I have literally gone months eating nothing but chips for every meal here. There is NO variety whatsoever. I'll spend 30 minutes in a superstore and just come out with a plastic box of ham that tastes of nothing but salt then maybe stop at mcdonalds just to have some different tasting chips for a change. I AM SICK TO DEATH OF BRITISH FUCKING FOOD! Older (middle-aged+) british people are insanely set in certain ways. It's probably the same everywhere, but if you don't say or act a specific way infront of many older people, they will literally HATE you. If someone says "good morning" to you, and they don't hear your reply, they will walk back to you and say "I SAID GOODMORNING???" and you'll be like "wtf" and then they'll go round telling people that you're arrogant or some BS. The gym where I used to live (within an hour of public transport) cost £77/month if you pay monthly. It is a shitty little village gym but because NO ONE fucking goes to the gym in this country they will charge the earth and act all elitist about it. On the other hand, the gym I currently go to is awesome family run and costs £15/month. But not one gym I have been to has any space to do deadlifts safely (or at all).

So I guess winter isn't always that bad. You might not know that British Columbia, Alberta and another one (N-S I think, not sure thought) also have separatist movement. To your 3rd point I respond Canada isn't what it initially was (1867 vs 2010), therefore french independance movement emerged.

- There are some quite popular right-wing parties that are completely out of their minds (you've probably seen the posters of the white sheep kicking out the black sheep and heard about the minarett-ban in switzerland and other crazy racist stuff like that). - Everything is so expensive here.

We will preach til sundown about the environment, human rights, the value of education, the dangers of capitalism, health, and our moral superiority on every other topic, but when you examine the facts, we're a polluting, capitalist bunch of a fatass hypocrites who wear their nikes and drink their lattes just like everyone else south of the border. We also feel fairly self-important because our media constantly tells us how great we are. This is why arguments between americans and canadians about which is a better place to live are so polarized. When you have 1231232 studies comparing various aspects of different countries, it's pretty easy to just present the 10 studies where you came out on top and declare yourself the winner. You've probably never even heard of the studies where you didn't do well. Frankly, going to the "strip" in my city is a surefire way to lose your faith in humanity. Edmonton is a place where people have money, but no class. Their idea of a good time is getting shitfaced, doing coke, renting a limo, and sticking their head out the window going "WOOOO" as they drive up and down the street 8x. If you're not renting a limo, you're probably going to shitty clubs with your bros or your hoes to listen to with shitty DJs (they don't even mix...) who play even shittier top 40 music to meet other hoes/bros, picking fights in the lineups, and otherwise embarassing themselves. If you're lucky enough to not be edged off the sidewalk in a display of macho superiority, you might hear conversations full of angry whining, gossip, "omg im sooo fucked up", and male posturing "whatever man, if that guy says a fuckin word i'll just go to my car and get my crowbar". We have the distinction of being nicknamed "stabmonton". And these are not muggings, these are not gang fights (despite what the official media release says), this is simply that the entire population of 16-30 year olds in this city are basically city-hicks with nothing better to do than fight. For murders in canada, we were #1 i 2006, #2 in 2007, and somewhere in top 3 for the last few years. Oh, also, people are really stupid.

I think they're also stupid and more than anything a response to how everyone panders to Quebec since they started spouting off about wanting to leave. The notion of secession is foolish, and is emotionally driven more than anything. We have an amazing country, no need to stir the pot because you can't have everything your way.

I've lived in Edmonton, it's pretty isolated; but I promise you that it's like that everywhere. Your last line sums it up: "people are really stupid." Doesn't matter where you go, same kind of shit is everywhere. People all across North America have been socialized to think that: drinking + acting retarded = entertainment.
