Keep it civil guys.

Alright I am sick of warning people: Trolling, flame baiting, and derailing will result in insta bans.
The same goes for conspiracy theorists and stupidity generally.

Confirmation was as follows
- On-site DNA test which came back as 99% positive.
- photos of face sent to CIA and confirmed with photo analysis
- confirmed by 20 year old wife who live in pakistan.

This thread is specifically dedicated to the details surrounding the raid/his death.

"May 1, 1945: Hitler confirmed dead. May 1, 2011: Bin Laden confirmed dead."

Is that true? Wikipedia says Hitler died april 30, when was he confirmed dead?

There's a time and a place for the anti-americanisms, right now isn't it. Trying to hijack this attention to attack America will just be shooting yourself in the foot image-wise imo. Either way congrats from Canada, well played.

Nah we'd have to murder 3000 civilians to make it an eye for an eye.

I'm kinda tempted to look for the number of civilian casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq by US attacks now :|

There's a distinction there.

There hasn't been any sort of comfort or condolence after 9/11. So many people needed this to move on.

Damn for real? Thats what really happened? You should hold a press conference since you have all the facts.

The funny thing is that if they found him already dead of old age they would still be celebrating you do know that right?

Well, he was 54, not 70+. But your main point stands, his death may not have a very significant effect on the actual conflict in the Middle East. However, this remains a huge symbolic victory for the US, since they declared their intention to find him almost ten years ago. To most Americans, he's a symbol of 9/11, so I can understand why they'd be so happy to finally hear this. It's about retribution.

I think we really have to take into account the psychological side of all this. If you've been fighting a war for a decade with extremely mixed results so far, something like this is huge. It's not only a symbolic victory, it's a real victory. At the end of the day, people in the military will at least be able to feel like they've finally accomplished one of the major goals of the war in the first place. Even if it doesn't change much, if it can provide a sense of encouragement to people who haven't felt that in a while, then its a great thing.

Obama stated he was killed after the firefight, meaning he was likely executed after the rest of the terrorists were eliminated.

Lol. No. That's not what he said. He said that after a firefight with a JSOF unit, he was dead. There is no implication that he was 'executed after the fight'. That's you misinterpreting words. The US & allies do not espouse extra-judicial killings, nor does Obama - just look at how the "Kill Team" was received by media & military recently.

Yes, I understand that it's good PR and all. But apart from that?

This is a hugely ignorant statement, you should be so ashamed of yourself.

Bin Laden was responsible for the murder of thousands of civilians in one of the greatest terrorist incidents in history, and was (until today) the physical and spiritual leader of Al Queda. His presence, his videos, his life, was a huge symbolic boost for terrorists and an international symbol that someone could kill so many, cause so much death and pain, and run away.

His death represents so much to the US, and especially to terrorists around the world. You're so ignorant, it appalls me. How can you label this as "good PR and all"? This event is HUGELY historic and a huge win for the entire world. Sure, practically speaking, Al Queda might not have been doing that much in where you're from. But they're still murdering thousands of innocents around the world, and all you can say is "good PR"?? Ridiculous and highly offensive to ANYONE who has relations to someone who has died from any terrorist incidents.

edit: btw I'm Asian Canadian and not American.

The best thing that could happen to Al Qaeda was Bin Laden becoming a martyr.

So are you, and the other... idiots... who are saying that this is useless and even bad for everyone and not big news, proposing that we should have let a mass murderer live and keep being the top symbol and spiritual leader of terrorists around the world, and letting him continue as the official director of Al Queda which had conducted major terrorist attacks all around the world like 9/11, the London subway bombings...?

People think this was all about America.

Europe is dealing with Al-Qaeda all over the place.

Al-Qaeda and the Taliban have littered their land with explosives that kill civilians every day.

If you aren't happy to see this megalomaniac terrorist leader dead, your beliefs are jaded, to say the least.

And he isn't a "martyr" now. No one is going to feel the urge to join Al-Qaeda because their leader got shot in the head while hiding in mansion....
