It pretty much sums it up.

"I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed. And on the pedestal these words appear: "My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away." I feel like it would be extremely appropriate. Alternatively, but mimicking the same sentiment: "We weren't as great as we thought we were, and neither are you, so don't fuck up like we did, or you'll get laughed at by the next generation."

Or this one by Morris Bishop: I met a traveler from an antique land Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them on the sand, Half sunk, a shatter'd visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamp'd on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings! Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Also the names of Emory P. Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Dukes, and Oscar Baer of 17 West 4th Street, Oyster Bay

I can't remember the source, but I read they found 5000 year old rocks with messages left for future generations. "Humanity must live in perfect harmony with nature" or something in the lines of that. "PS: There are no gods in the sky" besides that wouldn't change any belief, because it hasn't today.

It turns out it took physicists an awfully long time to really treat atoms as very real things (this is why Einstein's paper on Brownian motion was so significant). You could argue that a simple statement of the scientific method would be more important, though -- maybe something like this: "The best way to learn about and gain control of the world around us is to make systematic, quantitative observations and look for patterns in them; an even better way to learn about any particular phenomenon is to arrange circumstances such that you can measure that phenomenon in isolation, without interference from anything else, so that its unique properties can be deduced."

"It's dangerous to go alone! Take this" (hands child a sword). EDIT: Perhaps I will never tell my child what that means, and leave him (EDIT: or her...) to figure it out for himself.

You could tell them something like: The earth isn't flat. An object's mass attracts things to it, the sun has the most mass, we are attracted to the earth's mass. however if you're going for general life ones the classic fight club quote would be: You have to know, not fear, that some day you are going to die. Until you know that and embrace that, you are useless. -Tyler Durden
