It's no secret that Team Liquid has changed radically over the past year. Therefore it's with great interest that I make this thread. TL has done unofficial demographic surveys before (most recently here) and it'll be interesting to see how things have changed.
After about a week, I'll make some cool graphs in Excel to show the changes, if any.

I picked others for "why do you mainly come to TL?" I come to be entertained and everything seems to be included. Great members with extraordinary sense of humor. Also I commend the Mods for filtering out all the idiots.
I chose the "Other" option in why I come to TeamLiquid, because I don't come here for any one of those reasons. If TeamLiquid was just about StarCraft for me, or just about the community, or just about the other gaming cliques, I'd get bored before long and leave.
It's because TL offers all those things and more that I've stayed here for nearly a year. It's because I've been able to root for Liquid'Tyler and Stork to crush faces, laugh and cry with fellow community members sharing their stories and dreams, and get involved with the groups that play the games I love that AREN'T StarCraft.
All on the same day, on the same site, with the same people.
That's why TeamLiquid is special, and that's why I'll always be here.
Voted other for why I come here: it is basically my one stop shop for the internet. I learn about SC2 strats and happenings, but also about general news, internet memes (yes they do get posted as threads) and in general all things cultural. I also go on irc a lot and chat up a storm there, so it is also a social thing for me as well. Now, if TL had e-mail and video services then I would never go anywhere else.

Hey, I'd prefer to call him NonY as well, but dammit, the SCII crowd knows Tyler and not NonY.
Is there anything besides Mexico as Non-US/Canada North America in geographical location? Or are places like Alaska or Hawaii supposed to go there? I just found that option really strange, but maybe I'm missing something.
Just noticed there is no Central America, is that it or that should go with South America?

"Native" is a pretty neutral term in Canada, but "Indian" has a lot of baggage with it. Mostly the Indian Act (which doesn't apply to Metis, I still pay taxes ;_;)

North America and Latin America, they are two different ways to split the Americas, by geography, with South, Central and North, or by colonization, with Latin and "Anglo-Saxon?" Americas, so Mexico stays with the big boys in one way and is left behind in the other, or at least that's what I remeber from school.
As Im studying political science I just cant get around to say that the "how much do you post" question could use some numbers. For example: 1-10 times a month,1-6 times a week, 1-5 times a day, 5-10 times a day. "rarely" is not really specified which can produce unnecessary fluctuation.
I like the idea of the census though, keep up the great posts motbob :D
€: herp derp, someone suggested that already. changing it now is kinda moot though. Next time =)
I voted "The Community/People" for why I come here, but to be honest I don't really care about blogs or general forum. I'm just here because it has become my home over the years. I'm not here for any reason other than to be home.
I think a sexual orientation poll would be interesting to see as well. I was thinking a religion and political affiliation thread as well, but something tells me that it is a bit too controversial from what I saw in other TL threads and it is a bit irrelevant.
Also,I think education poll seems a bit important.

Political affilation is a bit hard to grasp imho, when people are from the whole world. Religion, sexual orientation would be interesting though.
I come to TL.net about 500 times a day because it's simply the best thing internet has ever seen. Everything is good about TL > the team, community, moderators, stream features, basically everything it has to offer.
The community does sometimes let the site down but the good bunch definitely do more than make up for it
For some reason I expected there to be more Asians than the poll shows. I expected the number of whites and the number of Asians to be around tied for first.
Same for some reason I thought there would be more Asians, but thinking about it that doesn't really make sense given the range of countries TL has and most users come from the US which is still a White majority even if there are concentrations of SC Asians nerds here.
The last poll isn't that surprising and isn't sad. BW is what founded TL but a lot of BW fans enjoy SC2 also so it's not like it's a betrayal to like SC2. The majority that voted for both SC2 and BW likely started out as BW fans anyways, though maybe I'm underestimating the amount of SC2->BW fans.
no I am actually studying political science. At least thats what its called here. It has some similarities with Social Science. (for example: using surveys as an empirical research tool)

I think that BW will be closer than you think.
Probably has to do with the fact that a huge amount of Tlers who follow SC2 read only the SC2 sections, and those who follow BW(over the years) read the General section too(same thing with Blogs and LQB really).
I come here because it's the most maturely moderated site I know of, and the community acts as my source of information for many things (such as the Japan events). I also occassionally present blogs and such in regards to my mod work, voice acting, and other such things for both educational value and to let people know what's up. Otherwise I post extremely rarely as I just don't have much to say that progresses anything (I'm just a troll otherwise).
I used to read everything on TL but after SC2 came out the information got so overwhelming Even being away for a week feels like missing out a lot when you are back. I think I was initially interested in TL mainly because of BW, now I stick around because of the community in general
20, I post moderately. Have a high post count mostly from being here for a long time. Usa. Came here for bw staying here mostly for community. I still follow the results here and there for bw and sc2.
I put other for the last poll because it's a combination of things: community, BW content, and a tiny bit of SC2 content (mostly TSL + some guides for when I rarely play SC2).

Definitely this as well. Not only does it just seem wrong having a competitive player with his ID as his actual name, but he's also a player I previously knew as NonY, so I get a huge irk when I hear Tyler >.>
For the last poll, it's pretty hard to say. I basically do everything, from BW/SC2 to sub forum stuff and what not. Not least of all, just for the community.

Well as with all surveys not everybody takes em. It might be accurate for the percent of women on TL, but probably not the raw number. Maybe if this was a featured thread or everybody was pmed and encouraged to take it the actual number would be closer.
Discovered this site a long time ago, because liquipedia had all the broodwar vods, and that was amazing. For the most part I wasn't playing broodwar anymore, but just watched it. After sc2 launch I decided to make an account as I started to play again, and I have way to much posts already xD
The continuation of the BW section and the faithfulness of its fans is amazingly helpful. There are tons of places popping up with SC2 content, but TL is still the stronghold for BW outside Korea. Even though I only play SC2 and never played multiplayer BW very much, I come here more often for the BW section.

It looks like not everyone voted in all polls. That's a shame.
Thanks for doing this. I'll be interested to see the results!
A question though - don't we have to put our birthdate in when we register an account? Is there someway that TL.net could use the registration info to look at age groups? Or I guess you only want to look at people who are active now, not all registered accounts?
Brood War Ocasional SC2 Kpop thread General discussion(some really good, smart people here and often discussed at a high level relative to other forums) General community(people are friendly, intelligent and understanding most of the time).

Sadly I can't pick an option for that, so I just picked SCBW+SC2.
I think one of the things that make this site such a huge and beloved community is the "high" age of most users, or atleast the the target of this site is not for kids but for grown ups that like games.
I'm 27 years old and i feel that should be the average for this site!

The good thing about using the generic term "aboriginal" is that it can apply to any aboriginal people, whether North American, Australasian, European, African or Asian.
For "Why do you mainly come to Team Liquid?", I voted other. I mainly visit the General and Sports & Games forum(s), but there is no option for both. I also check out the Blogs section from time to time. Almost never visit SC2/BW forums besides reading interviews on rare occasions.
There's less than 2.5k votes in the census, but there's 3k people logged in at the moment, and 11k people "active". It would be really great to get more responses, even though I'm not sure it would change the results overall.
Reason for coming here was a tough vote. I went for content related to BW only because I've been lurking and watching Stork and Bisu break my heart since 2007. I do read a fair amount of SC2 stuff as well, but if the entire SC2 section of the website shut down, I would keep coming here.
Also, good god poll, way to make me feel old at 23!
Edit: And yes, I only have 28 posts in 4 years and I don't think I even registered an account until last year. I usually just read tournament results and watch vods.
18 year old Chinese male from Canada here. I'd say I post a moderate amount now. I lurked TL without an account for about a year before creating an account, but rarely posted anything. I think I have something like 20 to 30 posts per week now though.
I'm not too sure about my answer for the last poll. The main reason I came to TL was because of SC:BW of course, and quickly got to liking the blogs/community discussions. However, more recently I've been more interested in the BW content yet again, so I'd say that my main reason for coming to TL daily changes with time.

pew barely made the first age poll lolo. I hope this is used to get better ads they are not very relevant to me and I also feel you should add more adds. I want bigger prices for future events and Hot_Bid / R1CH and all the other hard people should get some bonuses
Voted "community/people" for the last one. I came for BW at first 3 years ago but since SC2 is out I kinda stopped following BW as much as I used to (I watch like 1 match every 2 months now or so) and only watch TSL, because it's TSL and I've been watching since the first one and because Chill is awesome. I really only read the ADT and general forum in general plus sports/games and blogs anymore.

My main reason for coming to TeamLiquid varies a lot. Sometimes I come for what's being talked about for the week in the general discussion threads, or what games people have been keeping up with.
Of course StarCraft BW/WoL are always there as well, but as of late because there are so many tournaments I think I've probably been watching a ton of those with streams more than anything else.

Doesn't really matter either way
No, you're just poorly informed.
While individual leagues and team leagues are going, you're looking at 2-4 sets of games per day. Of those, most feature top pro caliber play, whereas SC2 is still in its infancy and features a range from top tier to amateur caliber.
SC2 may have more "stuff," but when much of it is random weekly tournaments of 512-1024 players for an e.g. $100 prize with no requirements to enter, it's quite difficult to argue that the level of play is the same.
In either event, your post is extremely inflammatory. Accusing people who voted for BW of "lying to themselves" is offensive.

Feels kinda silly to have that big title just for Mexico, if there's only Mexico that is. So maybe just put Mexico or remove it and have Latin America instead of South America.
Also, a poll for native langage would have been interesting too i think. Geographical says a lot i suppose, but then not necessarily.

Central America is technically part of North America, so is all of the islands in the Caribbean. That is a LOT of countries.
I feel bad, put down 20 but I'm really 19! Only turning 20 next week. Thought it'd be fine but I now realize I'm a total liar Also, surprised so many users are SC2 only, though I guess I shouldn't be. And mixed instead of other would be nice for ethnicity ^.^

I guess this is the best way to make a census of TL. Just be aware of trolls who try to be cute by fraudulently selecting the most extreme choices (such as >50 for age).
The closer the numbers are to the majority, the more accurate/believable they are.
I think what we can see from the age poll is that e-sports might gain commercial mainstream interest in 4 to 5 years, when the majority of TL users (assuming they roughly represent the overall age structure of the esports community) turns 25-30. These people, then being part of the "established society" will be a target for other companies (cars, beer,...) than only the nerdy ones (gaming hardware). Would also be interesting to see a poll of "highest educational attainment" in relation to the different age groups.
Day[9] made me do it. No literally, back then I wanted to get better and people in the battle net forums mentioned Day[9] A google search on him would led me to the day[9]daily thread.
Man, that should be included in the poll. He plugged Teamliquid a whole lot back then, also his archive at day9tv.blip.tv

LOL!!!
Would be really funny if NaDa's Body continued on forever, even after all of the current TLers pass on. Blizzard will be on Starcraft 10, but NaDa's Body would still have posters. :D
You'd think with all the advertisements for dating sites, more of us would have girlfriends we would be introducing to TL.
Either the dating sites aren't working, or some of us aren't getting our girlfriends addicted to StarCraft. Cmon guys, step it up. Sure it'll make writing your girl blogs awkward later, but deal with it.
I always have girlfriends but I try to keep my gaming addiction away from them...the last thing I need is my korean gf kicking my ass at starcraft and then bragging to my friends about it

Yes well you see, i usually consider those territories belonging to european countries to be part of Europe, which is contestable, but if you take that for true then Northern America by the "common" definition is just Canada/US.

What?
Latin America isn't a continent and South America starts below Panama. Last I checked Costa Rica and Cuba don't belong to any European countries.
26, white, usa, dude, post moderately, lurked for most of brood war, don't give a crap about sc2 content (game isn't that interesting to me), occasionally come for BW content but mostly for community and blogs.

Yea that is how it is. Central America is definitely part of NA, i don't know why anyone would think any differently :S
I'm from Panama but currently live in EU (but only for 2 years now), but voted for Panama because otherwise i wouldn't feel as special Thought TL would be more diverse than this
I wonder if we have any female Arabic 12 year olds who live in south east Asia though, would be incredible if we did O.o

Geographically maybe. Key point to the wiki article (other than it's a wiki article), is that there's no clear definition. I tend to have a cultural view on it. Thus Latin America, the US/Canada as North America and the european possessions who don't fit very well into it. It's just how i see the place. You don't have to agree with me.

That's a misrepresentation provided by the age groups split into two polls, 26 happens to be the highest one in that poll, it's still sub 250 atm, which is lower than everything between 17 to 25. (Decent bell curve we've got going on right now with 19-22 at the center)
With all graphic symbolization of data, always look at the actual numbers behind them, because graphics are generally misleading, or the brain makes them into something they are not.
I picked other for the last option: I spend almost all my TL time reading the debates and such in general with a bit of the EVE thread. And of course, watching GSL and day9.

It's not that people gave up on BW it's just that a lot of BW fans also follow SC2 too. New members changed the demographics of TL, but I'm guessing most BW fans didn't die off when SC2 came out they just aren't the majority anymore. 35% still come here for BW related content and I'd also guess many of the misc category votes still follow BW too just more so the community.
What's crazy is that only 3% of users say they post "a lot". I believe them, but man there's already quite a lot of posting going on. Imaging if that number bumped up even just a few percentage points.
This seems like a pretty predictable survey, but cool to see it done.

Think of yourself as young at heart! Eventually all us kids will grow up, and for most of us, playing games will stick with us. At some point, the generational significance of gaming will just cease to exist, and everyone will play in some respect.
back at it, but that article actually says that there's no clear definition, and does include a version where Central America isn't in it. Plus, i can imagine someone from Central America not really identifying with North America, considering that place is still mostly US/Canada, even if you put Central in it. I mean, culturally they're closer to Chili than Alaska, you know? Not to mention closer.
They do have the "other" category in most cases, and this is a poll for demographics... Why is it racist, then one would just turn it into an arbitrary census or poll rather.

You're not applying for a job or college. You're answering a survey in which you get to stay anonymous if you dont make a post stating what you are.
Is it a mistake that you guys have arab down twice or were you trying to separate the non-middle eastern arabs from the middle eastern ones?
as for mixed, yea it would be nice. personally i would prefer to know what they're mixed of but that would require allowing people to select multiple options. O well, I think this is all pretty cool anyways.

these are just polls. they aren't going to put your answers on your profile or anything. still don't want to answer? then skip that question. i'm mixed and identify more with 1 over the other. it's not that big of a deal. don't call racism when there is none.

Pretty much, here in NA hispanic means people of the indigenous/spanish blend that is mexico and central america. In somewhat blunt terms, not white, but not Native American.

Actually, in America, the only way to legally discriminate is to be bigoted against white males. Various laws have forced a "reverse discrimination". Use a racial slur directed at anyone who isn't white, get your ass kicked, the guy gets off (most places, obviously there will be some variance for community.) Use a racial slur directed against a white guy, and there's a good chance that if the white guy swings, he'll go to jail for a hate crime for discrimination against the way they like to talk or something. (Don't know if this has happened, but the atmosphere created by the laws makes most people not really want to try and find out.)
Oh, and lets not forget jobs. Equally qualified? White male is the last candidate to be hired, with decisions being based on gender and ethnicity "equality". Very equal, if the white guy is screwed for being born in the majority demographic for a lot of job positions.

I think it might have to do something with the massive anti racism movement. Basically if you even mention race, or skin colour, people think of you as a nazi. Not saying racism's a good thing, but basically where I'm from you're considered either racist or inbred if you have a flag on your lawn ^^
I'm a bit confused about why so many people said they have an account but no posts. Whats the point of an account if you're not gonna post? Of course there are some that just haven't found what something they want to post about but it doesn't seem very likely that that is the case for all of them.

That is actually rather surprising given how small the population of Canada is, but maybe Germany and France have their own equivalent of TL? But even then, UK alone has twice the population of Canada.

I don't think so. I think everyone who can speak English goes to TL, and those who can't generally stay away from the internetz. I guess there's reddit though, but I get the feeling there's mostly north americans in there as well.
I think SC2 isn't very popular in France or UK. I think it's mainly Germany and Sweden in western Europe, and Ukraine and Russia in Eastern Europe. I believe that's the main reason actually.
I guess the Census thread is as good a thread as any to make a first post on TL. Been lurking for a while as I come to grips with what goes on this forum and what does not.
Also, since the poll asked me to specify, I'm from South Africa.

You didn't read what I said. I'm talking about hiring, not about what demographic happens to have gone to school for a certain skill set and gotten jobs in certain fields. Demographics are a lot more complex than a straight 1 for 1 numbers game, and aren't even taken into account in the laws that force a company to hire based on race or gender just to try to even things out.
What happens if on paper, two candidates for a job are equal, but the personality of the white male seems better for working in the group? Potential lawsuit.
My wife works with someone who does literally half the work she does (she works in IT, and she's shown me tickets closed by herself and this co-worker, he's worked there a month longer than her and closed less than half as many), but it's taking months to work up enough paper trail for her white boss to be able to safely fire the guy.
Anyway, this isn't the purpose of this thread, I don't want to derail it, I was just answering a question. If you want to debate the merits of affirmative action laws, PM me.

theres never a "central america" option in the "where" polls, one would think the world does know we exist seeing that we are a popular vacationing spot at the very least
Why is there no category for East Indian? If you are grouping East Indian as Middle Eastern than that is incorrect. I believe East Indians don't identify themselves as Middle Eastern and Arabs and East Indians are completely separate races. It is odd that you would put us in the same category

Central America is not its own continent. Your country falls under "non-US/Canada North America".
That's debatable, depending where you come from, since you quoted wikipedia, let's see the same page on another language, but I could actually find books that say the same. It's fine to use the definition you used, since it does seem like it's used in the US, but just calling him wrong means calling a lot of renowed sources wrong.
In the bottom there's the list of continents, including Central America. It's really hard to find a way everybody agrees to divide the Americas, the spanish site actually calls it a subcontinent, just like it does for South America and North America, and calls America the continent, while the portuguese sites calls each a regular continent.
Another example, over here we consider Oceania the continent, while americans ussually consider it Australia, and they are actually diferent regions, I think americans consider all pacific islands either in Asia or America.
Not considering New Zealand in the same continent as Australia looks really weird to me.
Looking at the wiki link you gave, there are actually countries completelly missing from the definitions it contains, so it's really hard to believe in it's credibility.
