Why yes it is a protest thread. But it's also a serious thread for serious botanists.
I've got a spider plant and geranium growing on my bedroom windowsill. I think I've been over-watering the geranium though. As I understand, the two plants need radically different amounts of water. Any tips?

This is a very serious thread and I will be very put off if it is closed.
Please share the plants that you love and water and speak to. <3

Well I'm only really protesting the silliness of having a gun-lust thread with my very own plant-lust thread.
Those sunflowers look amazing. I assume since they are Russian I could plant some in a couple weeks (Easter Canada) and probably have some luck? Do I need to buy seeds online?-I don't think I've ever seen these before

I like these. Snapdragons! Really neat little flowers.
I also am a big, big fan of a another plant or two.

Raise them indoors under 6500K lights, 16-24 hours of light per day, with a fan blowing on them. Don't let them get root bound in their pots. Transplant outside when night temperatures are above 50F. Prepare a deep bed with lots of nutrients and drainage. Make the bed least a half meter deep, a meter deep if you are fucking serious about them like me. Here are last year's babies. + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/axf3b.jpg) Here is the pit I dug for the bed. Holy shit that's some very serious gardening. Thanks for sharing man! Will definitely look into these. Do you have pics of the fully grown flowers?

After seeing this thread I realized that I don't have any plants in my apartment, and I kinda want something. What do you guys suggest I could get for my bedroom windowsill that only needs to be watered daily and left in the sun, but is pretty and doesn't make a mess? I guess I could always ask my mom lol but she tends to go overboard with this sort of thing
|
i saw the gun thread title first then this, i lol'ed.
i've always wanted a back yard fenced with bamboo trees. and if i had acres of land, i'd have a bamboo forest.
|
I've just killed my cactus - I'm still baffled as to how I pulled that one of, but well, apperantly even a cactus needs water from time to time...
|
My girlfriend gave me a tulip for Valentine's. It's growing really slowly because the gap between my building and the next one doesn't allow much sun, but it's satisfying to watch it grow.
|
Although i cuerrntly do not grow any plants when i lived at my parents house a couple years ago we grew a vegtable garden made up of Corn, Summer Sqush, Zuqinni, Green beans, pea pods, carrots, brussel sprots, pumpkins, beats, green pepers, red pepers, yellow pepers, lettuce, and cucumbers. There may have been a couple other plants but i cannot remember right now. :D
|
I have a florection, NOW CALL ME CRAAZY! umm i dont plan on planting flowers actually, any suggestions on flowers that will actually give me something back besides that gagging in the back of my throat for how much i spent on flowers that don't do shit...
|
Well every fruit you've ever eaten started with a flower, but I think the real reason you're here is to be told you're crazy for having a florection.
You're crazy for having a florection.

I want to plant some flowers in my yard, but the the soil has a rock garden instead : |
Maybe I can just put a small one in the window in my room.

no plants at the moment, but would also like to legally grow a couple marijuana plants.. it really is a nice specimen.
would also like to grow a few peyote cacti, since it's legal in Canada.. also some giganteum somniferous papavera (sp?).. hehe.

![[image loading]](http://www.venusflytrap.co.uk/images/wasp_venus_small.jpg) I've always found carnivorous plants appealing. Not only do the eat pesky bugs but they look hardcore while they do it. I like how they show how brutal nature really is. A Venus Flytrap would probably be my first choice.
|
Grass. The unspoken hero of the planet. Maybe not a flower but must be considered as the single most awesome plant in the world! I love grass. And by grass I actually mean Grass. The kind Cows eat, the kind that feeds most of the world's faun.

Bamboo can really take over in the right climate, but is quite difficult to contain (My grandparents planted some a few years ago and now it's 20 feet tall and quite robust). The roots spread out underground and sprout new shoots, so they can require a lot of work to prevent a bamboo fence from encroaching on your lawn. At least this makes it really easy to make a bamboo forest

I've always wanted to get some higanbana (also known as red spider lily, equinox flower), they're my favorite flower. The genus, Lycoris, is native to many parts of Asia.

Nothing in my room. I'm more kind of a guy who buys plants for the looks, after a few weeks it's dead because I don't water it and I have to buy a new one. Also most friends tell me watering plants is actually cheaper than going to a local mart every once in a while and buy new plants. Thus there's nothing flowerish in my room, except for things like parsley in the kitchen for cooking purposes. + Show Spoiler +For all those McDonalds/Burgerking freaks like me, that's it and you can ACTUALLY eat it! ![[image loading]](http://www.gartentipps.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/kraeuter-giessen.jpg) If the garden counts as well, there's way too much to just pick a few so I'm going with the biggest thing there is:
![[image loading]](http://www.colostate.edu/Dept/CoopExt/4dmg/images/walnut1.jpg) Walnut trees rules, they're just awesome. Imagine a cold wintery day, you don't want to go outside because it's fucking cold and you don't have to, because you have everything you need inside. Your couch, TV, a few walnuts and hopefully a nutcracker. Screw those animals and their wintersleep. I've perfected that without the need of sleeping thus you're not missing a thing!
Edit: Oh and I used to have a small field of strawberries in the garden too. Now that's awesome, walnuts, strawberries, there's nothing missing and you're the luckiest man alive. Sadly I don't know what happend to that field of strawberries

Red Roses, Birds of Paradise, Mistletoe, honeysuckle.
|
I have a bonsai jade tree, a bonsai... Mangrove, and a garden with strawberries cantaloupe and some beans. As for plants I'm planning on getting, I really want to grow my own bonsai, the two I already have were store bought several years ago.

Bamboo. It's really low maintenance and fills up your backyard almost instantly. You can cut some and use it for random stuff around the house as well.

I've always been intrigued by Bonsai... If I were ever to develop a green thumb I'd investigate Bonsai for sure, because there are so many different kinds, and it's literally like building something yourself. Very cool.
I quite like this one:

Oh yes I fully support this protest thread. I dont understand TL sometimes, why is the gun thread even allowed? It's just sad.
I'm planning to plant a firetree one day this summer

not a serious botanist or anything, but i do grow some cucumbers, tomatoes and 깻잎(perillas) in the backyard.
also i had a venus flytrap thinking hoping to eat some bugs that fly in to the house. didnt work too well.

haha yeah, if you like them i suggest you try growing some too on backyard or in a pot. theyre relatively easy compared to other things i grow. Buying them in supermarket is way too overpriced and ones you grow last all summer. and fresh too!
|
My mom is an orchid lover xD
She has at least 10 of them in her room she cares for.
Honestly some of the most beautiful things on the planet....and the best thing is you only get one or so flowers a year, so each one is very special.

Jade plants, salvia plants, and of course the most important plant on earth, hemp. Most people don't know there was a law in the 1600s that made farmers grow hemp. It's good for everything from clothes to paper to fuel.

I would like to own a nice grapefruit tree. Too bad I live in washington.
|
Will be living in NYC for a while. Won't exactly have a garden for the next several years. I suppose I could raise a cactus on my window sill or something. Not worth it IMO.
|
I also have inverted tomatoes no the porch. Very low maintenance. I water them only in the afternoon and they give me 30 or so tomatoes every month. Good for fast breakfast and snack.
|
I want to get a Aglaonema and a Japanese Peace Lily when I get my own place. Movie plants from The Professional and Hot Fuzz for those who didn't know. :D
|
I had some flowers that i planted in like May last year, then i remembered that i lived in Arizona, and then all my flowers practically burst into flames due to the heat. It was fun planting, but they literally lasted like 1 week...
|
Are there any specific plants which you would reccomend for someone that is quite new?
Would be placed inside my room, in a pot and prefreably small.
|
I have a Barrel Cactus. I would highly recommend a cactus for a plant; they are unique looking and very easy to take care of (you can forget to water it for 2 months and it will be ok).

Yeah, just like how it's hard to have guns in NYC, it's hard to keep plants
Maybe you can buy a chia pet.

You guys ever heard of Banyan Trees?
I dunno I can't get imageshack to work, so here: Google Image Search for Banyan Tree
They grow up and actually re-root in the ground and grow again.
edit: other than that I would like to have a venus fly trap.

I have many... peaches, bananas, mirabelle, cherry, strawberry, grape a vanilla plant and much more, maybe ill post good pics in some weeks, when the sun arrives.
|
I have a little strawberry plant ^^
I don't really know anything about plants and well, how often should I water it?
|
My first plant/tree I ever took care of is young apricot tree like 15 years ago. When we first bought the place for our house there was one wild apricot plant that was so crooked that was growing basicly on the ground.
My father wanted to cut it because of its wierd growing patern but I didnt allow it. It took me 1 year to make it grow straight and now it gives so much fruit that the tree's branches are so low to the ground lol. It gives so much fruit that we can drink home made apricot juice trough the whole year.
We have another apricot tree, 2 peach trees, 2 plum trees, pear tree, 9 grapefruit vines, blackberries and blueberries in the yard. My mom got lots of flowers too but I dont know the names in english lol.
|
A bunch of ivy and several orchids, mostly white, some maroon. A few small succulents on my desk.
Eventually I would like to grow my own bonsai trees, and/or have a carnivorous plant greenhouse. Specifically one with some Nepenthes.
|
I own none... my room smells
I always had a thing for lavenders though, I think it's the purple.
|
You, you're the flower i've always wanted.

I have a single Cherry Blossom Tree in the garden

This thread is so much more awesome than the depressing Gun thread. Thank you OP <3.
As to plants, well I got a few at my appartment. Im no expert of any sort but I believe they are some variety of Orkidé. I searched around and they kinda look like this one: + Show Spoiler + Which is an orange phalaenopsis orkidé.

I attempted to grow a bonsai from a seed, but after germinating the seeds and planting them they never grew :/
If I was to attempt to grow something again I'd choose a strong smelling flower, as I hate the choking stench of aerosol-air-fresheners but I also dislike the coldness of opening a window... If anyone could recommend a strong smelling indoor flower to grow I'd be very grateful, as I'm not sure what would work ~_~

I love this idea!
I've wanted to get Lily of the Valley for the longest time, but I'm not sure my climate can support them.

I have a few sweet orchids. They are amazing and easy to care for once you get a hang of it. Basically, do not overwater.

Finally a nice thread about personal stuff! I used to have 2 little cactus on my shelf, but on a windy day my window killed one of them by chopping its body from the roots Now only one is left, once I found out how its called, i'll post a pic

By "protest thread" are you refering to the gun thread ? If so I fail to understand how this thread is protesting ... I mean I get that flowers are peacefull and guns are not but , why precisely a plant thread. Anyways for the plant , I have always adored bonzai trees and I want copious amounts of them. Also there is a blood read maple looking tree that just looks fantastic :p
|
Thanks to OP for the awesome thread! So far I'm pretty sure about three plants that I want to buy in the near future. I don't know the name of the first plant, but it's a pretty regular plant. I just adore how the leaves are light yet the wood is so sturdy.

All the plants I grow are ones I can eat
Currently have beds of rhubarb, garlic, redishio (might be radishio actually) lettuce, a pepper plant and there are plans for some peas and tomatoes. I also keep plenty of herbs indoors on a mini herb garden thing I have on my kitchen windowsill. Got chives, coriander, basil and rosemary on there at the moment. The kitchen smells awesome.

This thread is just about the last thing you'd expect on a starcraft forum, glad to see it generate so much interest. When I was a kid I turned my sandbox into a garden, 15 years later only the raspberry's are still alive, and they've spread all over my parents' back yard like weeds that have to be pulled every year. But hey, they get tons of free raspberries every august, I don't see why they complain. And at least raspberries are productive, making tasty treats unlike all those lazy flowers my mom spends so much time attending too.
|
what are good indoor plants i can grow/have... its too cold to grow things outside and I want a plant
|
Unfortunately, i'm allergic to nature... grass, weed, ragweed, trees, etc, which really sucks because my mom loves plants
|
2 cactuses and an Aloe Vera plant. I'm horrible with anything green, it just withers and dies as soon as I step near them, so I'm playing it safe. Besides, I'm a bachelor, so it's not like anyone expexts my apartment to be a garden.
|
Thats a fairly gay thread title right there. On topic i have herbs in pots on my kitchen windowsill. So far got Rosemary, Chives, Basil, Sage, Parsley and Bay The most useful thing if your a keen cook, and they only cost me 50p/plant from ASDA, cheap and they last for ages as long as you take care of them.
|
I have a balcony outside of my room and I am growing a society garlic that i transplanted from another region of my property and have potted. It is now over two feet tall and has 3 awesome blooms and the others on my ranch are <1 foot and have no signs of blooms in the near future. I also just finished planting a Cosmo? seed and cannot wait to see the results. I am new to gardens and plants and whatnot but I am really excited to see how this is going to turn out.
On a side note, my balcony has rails that i would love to have a vine(s) growing on. What would be the best vine and procedure to accomplish this. Once my cosmo(s) grow i will post a fun picture of my balcony garden that i am ever so proud of XD
