Crisis in Japan - Page 9

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

I'm hoping for the best for everyone involved.
I have a dream, that some day I wouldn't see any imba comments in GSL threads.

Just saw the video most of you guys have seen.

I hope the damages are minimal and not too many lives are lost.

Glad there isn't any leaks on the nuclear(?) reactors around the area. That would be bad.

Reading news about earthquakes in Tokyo, which caused a whole school's roof to collapse. Hunders of childs inside.

Not sure if it's been linked yet, but a ground-level video someone took of the earthquake itself:

Thoughts are with the people of Japan.

Just saw a statement by Japanese pm stating nuclear power plants had been affected but no confirm of leak. Hopefully there isn't one.

I am due to go to japan in 4 days.

I live in Yokohama which is about 40 km from Tokyo, and to my knowledge there hasn't been much damage - in this area. My family has contacted my dad who lives in Tokyo and he's said that everything is ok.

Up in Sendai though, different story.

thankfully reactors automatically shut down in these kind of events...if not,the consequences would be devastating beyond words

Heard on the news that Japans got the fastest early warning system which alerts people within 5-10 minutes, in combination with high building standards hopefully the death toll is low. I really hope so

My god.

Such a gigantic earthquake. Remember that the Richter scale is logarithmic... so to put this in context it's roughly 500 times larger than the earthquake that devastated Christchurch last month and probably killed over 200 people (including a number of Japanese tourists).

From what I've been hearing, people generally have made it out ok... so hopefully we'll continue to hear that as we learn more.

There's warnings that tsunamis can reach and hit places as far as Australia (where I am) and even New Zealand, further away. That's some scary stuff. I hope the people of Japan pull through this.

Oh, and ABC News 24 is live-streaming NHK World, you can watch it here: http://www.abc.net.au/news/abcnews24/

edit: yup, 11,000 people in the affected areas in russia are being evacuated.. just shows you the magnitude of the earthquake

thank you for the information, my girlfriend and I appreciate it. Her father works in tokyo, and they didn't get ahold of him yet so thats at least reassuring.

The footage where the cars barely escape from the oncoming wave is like something straight out of a movie o_o

It really is sorta heartbreaking to hear the Prime Minister's translator. It sounds like she's about to break down crying.

I was standing in the convinent store when everything started shaking. At fist I thought it was my hangover that made it hard to stand then I realised it was an earthquake. Next thing I noticed was the staff running aound to make sure the doors didnt get blocked and that stuff started falling out from the shelves. Todays earthquake was BIG.
