Crisis in Japan - Page 38

Thread is about the various issues surrounding Japan in the aftermath of the recent earthquake. Don't bring the shit side of the internet to the thread, and post with the realization that this thread is very important, and very real, to your fellow members.

Do not post speculative and unconfirmed news you saw on TV or anywhere else. Generally the more dramatic it sounds the less likely it's true.

also what is extra shitty is that today was graduation for junior high school students all across japan. talk about a shitty way to end things at JHS. thankfully, most (maybe all) ceremonies were held this morning and most (maybe all) students were sent home around lunch, so hopefully there was no school buildings full of students (in JHS at least.. but i think ES/HS were normal days, unfortunately)

"Japanese police have now confirmed that between 200 and 300 bodies have been found on the beach near Sendai, the closest city to the epicentre. NHK television said the victims appeared to have drowned. Earlier, police said at least 60 people had been killed and 56 were missing."

The images I have been watching on Al Jazeera are haunting. I hope the Japanese Government and People can get through this as best as possible.

Anyone ever have this thought while you're watching the news these days that all these people who die would probably have carelessly add you on facebook even if they're not sure they know who you are?

It's a bit of a strange feeling, these people in Egypt or Lybia or New Zealand or Japan that you might have casually talked to 5 minutes ago now simply no longer exist.

Aside from the obvious general loss of human life, there's also a strange sense that these are distant acquaintances that are dying. It feels like when you open an old jigsaw puzzle and there's a few pieces missing.

Maybe I'm just getting old, or maybe this whole ambient presence thing is changing how people feel about each other.

Unfortunately, there isn't really too much we can do about predicting earthquakes. The absolute best anyone can do is saying that there is a potential of a quake in some region. Getting specific warnings, thus far, is pretty much impossible.

I talked to a japanese friend of mine who lives in Tokyo a few hours ago. She said it's still quaking, but I guess the situation isn't that bad anymore, at least in tokyo.
But a lot of people died in Sendai and it seems that other countries might suffer from this aswell.
Hope this all is over as soon as possible.

My dad woke me up, our school is canceled for tsunami warnings. This seems pretty serious, idk when our tsunami hits though.

Sort of makes the Chile earthquake a blessing though, i very well believe it was sent by God to test our defenses for this

"Japan's government has declared an emergency situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after a reactor cooling system malfunction. But officials say there is no radiation leaking. Some 3,000 residents living near the plant in Fukushima prefecture, north of Tokyo, have been told to evacuate the area."

The on the BBC Live stream (video) it said there was a fire and has been put out.

I don't think that whirlpool is too bad. They'd just probably get stuck in it until it goes back to normal. The thing is, the current based whirl pools don't usually suck downwards.

These type of catastrophes are manmade because a bad infrastructure will do terrible damage. Luckily, I believe that the Japanese are really good at damage prevention and from what I've read so far, so on balance, that's always really good.

Still, hope everyone is ok and prayers go out to those that were unfortunately killed in the disaster.
