I guess there must be some problems because it is a composition of different pictures. East Asia seems overexposed compared to Horn of Africa for example. Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Yakutsk and even some random spot in the middle of the highlands of Papua New Guinea that can only be Mendi (population 20k) or Mount Hagen(50k) appear brighter then Mogadishu(2mil) and Addis Abeba(3mil).

Mogadishu may simply have less electricity. I don't know much about Somali economics, but it's possible that many of those 2 million don't have power.

Westerlund 2, Hubble's 25th Anniversary Image. Curiosity rover spoted by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on April 8, 2015 on the lower slope of Mount Sharp. And I finally found the image after almost a year of searching online, truly fits this thread: + Show Spoiler + Rites of passage and, all too probably, their final meeting: a Polish woman slips something into her husband's knapsack as he leaves for the front, September 1939.

Most applicable with the recent Memorial Day in America. When those in the armed forces lose a friend in war, veterans might buy them a drink, a small but touching gesture. I've read on more than one occasion (as happened in the above) The managers of the establishment might leave the drink there for the rest of the day. In memory, lest we forget. edit: IED - Improvised Explosive Device, EOD - Explosive Ordnance Disposal, RC - Remote Control

I think some of them really do say a lot. The girl who was scared of the photographer says a lot more than just "war is bad" and it speaks to a whole dimension that a lot of us just don't ever come into contact with. I agree that a lot of them are repetitive and we all know about the tragedies of war, but some of the pictures have a human element to them that words don't really capture in my opinion.

A picture saying more than a thousand words is a metaphor for saying that images can convey more feeling over text. It's about quality rather than quantity.

This kind of squeamish NIMBY attitude is precisely why war photos are important to share.

People not wanting to see war or support the shedding of blood aren't people to look down on. I don't want to see war photos either, but some of them do really show important human moments. A lot of others, however, are just iconic war photos or things that make war look interesting. His criticism is valid. That said, for some people all of these pictures really are worth more than a thousand words. These pictures boil down to art, in a sense, and art is very much appreciated by a person according to their life. I would have it that war is entirely eradicated and forgotten, but this stuff really speaks to people.
