Apparently an Antares rocket exploded a few seconds into launch and trashed the launch complex.

Details and video aren't really available yet.

I went outside to watch the launch from DC, but didn't see anything. Someone else with a cell phone suddenly said "oh shit"

Oh man, what a set back... It was just not meant for this flight to happen.

I looked in the wikipedia article but it's light on details, what was the payload for the mission?

Is it anything critical for the ISS?

It was thousands of pounds of supplies... so yea I'm sure the ISS needs them. I don't know what the contingency plan is.

It also had classified "crypto equipment", so CNN is saying the area needs to be secured while they recover the equipment.

Wow that video....holy shit. Was actually going to watch it live when it popped up on my twitter feed but I had to do something. Came back and saw smoke everywhere and shit on fire on the stream T_T

Thankfully nobody was on it but with all the stuff it was going to carry to the ISS...wonder how soon they can try again, and just how urgent the supplies were.

Hopefully Planetary resources follow the American model of building a backup for twice the cost. Orbital Sciences was using Russian Engines known for problematic launches!

WASHINGTON — Rocket maker Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is expected to begin a series of review boards with the U.S. government’s chief engineer the week of Oct. 27 as it enters the “final phase” of its quest to earn the Air Force certification necessary to launch national security missions, a service spokeswoman said.

The Air Force requires SpaceX — and any other so-called new entrants in the national security launch marketplace — to provide data from three successful launches for analysis and to pass 19 engineering review boards, among other tasks, to earn certification.

NASA: Advise that nobody go near the area due to chemicals, (possibly still burning?), second stage status is unknown, don't know if engines were cause of failure. Result is of a $200 million loss.
