WASHINGTON — A SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico late May 30, concluding Axiom Space’s second private astronaut mission to the International Space Station.

The Crew Dragon spacecraft Freedom safely splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico near Panama City, Florida, at 11:05 p.m. Eastern. Recovery crews quickly got the spacecraft on a SpaceX vessel and helped the four-person crew out.

The spacecraft undocked from the ISS 12 hours earlier, concluding an eight-day stay at the station on the Ax-2 mission. The spacecraft launched on a Falcon 9 May 21 and docked with the station less than 16 hours later.

“That was a phenomenal ride. We really enjoyed all of it,” said Peggy Whitson, the former NASA astronaut and current director of human space flight at Axiom Space who commanded Ax-2, shortly after splashdown. With Ax-2, Whitson extended her record for most time in space by an American astronaut to approximately 675 days.

Joining Whitson on Ax-2 were John Shoffner, a private astronaut who served as pilot for the mission, and two mission specialist astronauts from Saudi Arabia, Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi. Those two were selected by the Saudi Space Commission in February for the mission under an agreement the commission signed with Axiom Space in September 2022.

The Ax-2 crew had a compressed schedule of activities on the station. The mission was originally scheduled to spend 10 days at the ISS but was shortened to eight to keep a cargo Dragon mission on schedule to launch June 3. The Ax-2 launch had slipped from early May because of delays in a Falcon Heavy launch that used the same Kennedy Space Center launch pad as Ax-2.

The mission, which incorporated lessons learned from the Ax-1 private astronaut mission to the ISS in April 2022, appeared to go smoothly. The crew conducted a set of science and technology demonstration experiments while performing educational outreach activities, particularly for Saudi students.

Also Sierra Space is one step closer to going into space.

WASHINGTON — Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser took a step closer to its long-awaited first flight by powering up its systems in a key test.

The company announced May 31 that it had powered up the spaceplane in its assembly facility for the first time, feeding electrical power into the vehicle that, in space, would be generated by its solar panels and turning on flight computers and other components.

“This is a milestone that points to the future and is a key moment in a long journey for Dream Chaser,” said Tom Vice, chief executive of Sierra Space, in a statement about the test.

The test comes as the company prepares to ship the first Dream Chaser, called Tenacity, to NASA’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Ohio, the former Plum Brook Station. There, the spacecraft will go through thermal vacuum tests before shipping to Cape Canaveral for final launch preparations.

Sierra Space did not disclose a schedule for those milestones in the announcement of the powering up test. Speaking during a panel at the 38th Space Symposium in April, Janet Kavandi, president of Sierra Space, said Dream Chaser would ship to the test facility “in the July timeframe.”

She said the vehicle would be tested there for a few months before shipping to Florida. “We should be ready to go by the end of this year,” she said of launch plans for Dream Chaser.

That schedule will depend not just on the readiness of Dream Chaser but also the manifest of missions going to the International Space Station as well as the status of United Launch Alliance’s Vulcan Centaur rocket. Dream Chaser is slated to launch on the second Vulcan mission, after a launch of an Astrobotic lunar lander that has slipped to later this summer because of launch vehicle testing issues.

Starliner has been delayed again. Look at one of the reasons.... now imagine it had gone ahead and been crewed ffs.

Honestly surprised Starliner is still getting funding. By this point NASA should be invoking whatever failure to deliver clauses were in that contract. Letting Boeing figure out if they want to finish and market it or just stop the program.

Been saying this for years lol. Starliner, BO, SLS. Learn to cut your losses NASA and re-evaluate some shit.

And fuck the politicians for holding NASA hostage for jobs over advancement of sciences. Like Brownsville, AL is a cream of the crop location to work. (fuck texas on principle, of course)

Now Boeing is being taken to court saying they stole IP and have been knowingly misusing said stolen copies on NASA projects.

Wilson and Boeing had collaborated over many years on several big space projects, including the International Space Station (ISS).

Wilson invented a series of tools designed to tighten fittings to precise specifications that were approved by NASA to avoid unnecessary damage to spacecraft and the potential for dangerous leaks of toxic or explosive fluids.

The lawsuit alleges Boeing's "theft" of designs for tools used by astronauts to install equipment on the ISS, including part of the life support system and an airlock.

Wilson Aerospace claims Boeing orchestrated a cover-up, expunging all records showing any relationship between the companies.

Peter Flowers, partner at the law firm Meyers & Flowers, which is representing Wilson Aerospace, said: "Boeing's brazen theft is illustrative of a large corporation leveraging its unchecked power to squash out a small family-owned and operated business.

"The Wilsons have a storied history in aviation and Boeing once again has shown that they will act deceptively to take advantage of smaller suppliers, like Wilson, by stealing and infringing on sensitive intellectual property.

"Boeing's choices have endangered astronauts, all in the name of a larger bottom line."

Wilson is seeking damages from Boeing for use of its "trade secrets".

In a statement, a spokesperson for Boeing said: "This lawsuit is rife with inaccuracies and omissions.

"We will vigorously defend against this in court."

Virgin Galactic about to launch again. Also Rocket Lab might launch the "secretive" suborbital HASTE cargo this weekend....

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Virgin Galactic announced Thursday that monthly commercial flights to the edge of space will begin for ticket-holders in August, following a research flight planned for the end of June.

The space tourism company will be taking up a team of specialists with the Italian Air Force and the National Research Centre of Italy to conduct microgravity research. The window for that research flight will begin June 27 and span the next three days, with timing depending on the weather.

After that, those who have been waiting more than a decade for their ride aboard Virgin Galactic’s rocket-powered space plane are expected to get their chance. The company said the first of those flights will begin in early August, with monthly flights following that.

“This next exciting chapter for Virgin Galactic has been driven by innovation, determination and a commitment to delivering an unparalleled and truly transformative customer experience,” CEO Michael Colglazier said in a statement.

Virgin Galactic has been working for years to send paying passengers on short space trips and in 2021 finally won the federal government’s approval. The company completed its final test fight in May.

After reaching an altitude of nearly 50,000 feet (15,000 meters), Virgin Galactic’s space plane is released from a carrier aircraft and drops for a moment before igniting its rocket motor. The plane shuts off once it reaches space, providing passengers with silence, weightlessness and an aerial view of Earth. The rocket ship then glides back to the runway at Spaceport America in the New Mexico desert.

Virgin Galactic has sold about 800 tickets over the past decade, with the initial batch going for $200,000 each. Tickets now cost $450,000 per person.

The company said early fliers have already received their seat assignments.

The highest profile test flight came in July 2021 when Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson beat fellow billionaire and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and rocket company Blue Origin into space. Bezos ended up flying nine days later from West Texas, and Blue Origin has since launched several passenger trips.

Pretty much, if confirmed, destroys any hope of a successful environmental lawsuit that is in court right now. SpaceX is trying to join in on the defense with the FAA.

What is the consensus here around NASA being a potential conspiracy i.e they don't go to the moon/international space station is filmed, this is to drain money etc.?

I think I can speak for everyone in the thread that it would be a lot more impressive if NASA could fake everything and has produced enough evidence to convince so many people that its real. Things from being able to measure the distance from earth to the moon by using light from a mirror on the moo, being able to see the satellites/ space stations with your own equipment. The kinds of special effects needed to fabricate the pictures and footage from these supposed fake trips and from the different telescopes we've got out there.

And to keep it a secret despite all the different nations and organizations that would benefit from exposing it as a fake.

You are not going to get a receptive audience to such a conspiracy theory if that is what you are wondering.

Would it really be that difficult to fake though? And measuring distance from earth to the moon via a mirror on the moon, sounds like a folk tale, is there any examples of any real person doing that?

My issue comes from watching these "nasa fail compilations" on instagram which shows what looks like green screen bugs, people going through the ceiling here's some examples but it seems like there are tons

https://imgbox.com/TEu4mDpu
https://imgbox.com/LQelbY7h
https://imgbox.com/cxqMpzKb
https://imgbox.com/aij7K5Bk
https://imgbox.com/NGgu9gQG
(examples of green screens, a fly on the mars rover)

I only recently started looking into it, but it's made me really skeptical we've ever actually been to the moon. Figured broodwar community is big brained and could let me know what they think. There's also videos of an astronaut called Don Pettit saying we destroyed the technology to go to the moon? ex.

As someone who works in government, no, there is absolutely no way the U.S. Government is capable of keeping this conspiracy covered up.

That would be assuming that everyone in the government knows that NASA is faking moon landings etc and is forced to "keep their mouth shut" Maybe most workers don't even know? I just don't know how to explain away NASA using green screens. Maybe they are on the moon but use it to get additional footage?

No, it's not assuming that. I don't care how small they try to keep the circle, this just isn't happening.
