Valve has officially confirmed that arrests have been made in several countries related to the theft of the Half-Life 2 source code. In a press statement they praise the gaming community for their help in solving the case.
“Within a few days of the announcement of the break-in, the online gaming community had tracked down those involved,” said Gabe Newell, Valve’s CEO. “It was extraordinary to watch how quickly and how cleverly gamers were able to unravel what are traditionally unsolvable problems for law enforcement related to this kind of cyber-crime.”

Online Community Tracks Down Hackers
June, 10 2004 – Arrests have been made in several countries related to the break-in to Valve’s network, theft of the Half-Life 2 source code, and release of the source code on the Internet.
Thousands of tips were received related to the criminal activities, with a core group of people who were able to analyze and backtrack from these clues. Subsequent to these individuals being identified, Valve has been working with various national authorities to prepare cases against those involved, leading to these arrests.
“It was very uplifting to see how the community rallied and tracked these people down. Everyone here at Valve is once again reminded of how much we owe to the gaming community,” added Mr. Newell.

no it's not... this is very new

yea HL2 looks spectacular. Just the mere fact that in one of the videos, a matress was thrown haphazardly about and the way it conformed to its surroundings was drool inducing.

All I have to say is no matter how good HL2 comes out to be, most the retards will just want another CS mod for it....goddamn that is some boring shit.

HL2 comes with CS built right in... It "is" CS, with the new HL2 engine. This includes the physics engine so things will be destroyable. I've seen gameplay videos of it and it looks really sweet... map was de_aztec and CTs were shooting Ts in the water and the water was splashing everywhere and shit, coooooool...
HL2 also comes with HL1 built into it =/ (I think)

it sure is, but when you play ctf 5v5 with geforce 2, fps can go to like 40/50 , why picmip 8 helps keep above 100 =/

the HL single player was classic for its time, and the HL2 team has had more freedom, time, funding to make the best game possible. they probably are not overly focusing on graphics... everything else is probably just as good as the graphics, at least in the single player, the effort, the time, the quality, funding, etc.

Im not so sure i buy this whole "community" effort to track down the hackers. The reason the hackers did this was for the community. They exposed that valve had been lying all along about release dates, engine capabilities, and progress. Valve had been playing game politics with everyone trying to steer the course of what people would buy, and some got fed up with it. Suspicion was already there, but once the code was released, it was confirmed. Valve had been fulla shit for awhile and now called on it. Its not like it was 100% code disclosure anyway, from what i remember it was more around 30-40%. So its not like valve was crippled. The only potential harm done was just further delaying the game causing valve to recode parts for security reasons, which i doubt they even did. If by chance some nerdy piece(s) of shit turned em in for a reward, this is just another example of valve playing with words. This aint the fuckin whitehouse, why they gotta mislead people like this?
