Ive heard the times that the bible gives are not literal and just figurative, so the earth is not only 6k years old and the earth wasnt created in 7 days. But id have to ask the 2 pastors in my family (im lutheran btw) what they think of it.

how does logic dictate that God doesn't exist? you can use logic to prove that God obviously exists, the problem is just that logic isn't always meaningful
|
Simple human logic dictates that some form of God(s) do(es) exist. Think about it. If you were raised completely alone, without any contact with other humans to influence you, wouldn't you think the world was created by some powerful being(s)? Or would you come up with evolution as a way to explain everything?
This doesn't need to turn into an argument over Creation Vs. Evolution. I'm just stating the facts of human reasoning.

I'm curious what this research would lead to. "well since teamliquidians believe god doesn't exist i have scientifically determined god doesn't exist!"

The poll really is far to generic for any practical use.

OK LISTEN UP FOOS, here's how it works:
Before the big bang there was a very dense lump and time didn't exist. You can't ask stuff like how it got there or who made it, because time would have to exist for it to "get there" or for something to "make it". It's just either there or it's not. There is either a God or there isn't. As it happens it WAS there, all the matter and energy in today's universe in a handy lump. There is a God. God IS the lump before time. It went bang all of a sudden, rapidly expanding to create spacetime between the gaps and over time evolved from hot plasma with matter and antimatter annhialating each other and stuff to cooler, less chaotic, more matter dominated structures progressively towards stable atoms (the "7 days of creation", notice the subtle symmetries). And would you know it (skipping several stages) on a lonely rock, third in from a young star, conditions were just right for the right bunch of particles in the sea to eventually come together by coincidence to form something capable of assimilating and processing nearby nutrients and replicating itself, the single celled organism, the first spark of life. Skipping several stages ahead again leads us how we came about from the initial spark, and that's our creation story. I could spend hours appreciating how amazing it is we came to have consciousness, our body is the "temple of god" (consciousness makes us special, like a beautiful serene temple, as opposed to random crappy stuff around the temple like rocks and grass, which is all the matter in the universe which isn't part of a being of consciousness, ie us, and some intelligent animals, and maybe some aliens somewhere). Which is fantastic! But it all came from that single lump before time, "God" if you will. Therefore my vote is yes
holy shit no one will never read this

Your reasoning is flawed. Even if your speculation about what a person raised completely alone would or would not believe is entirely correct nothing about the actual state of the world follows logically from a belief.

to religious people god = a thought that acts like a guide to a better life to non religious people god = non-existant to brainwashed fundamentalists god = a big guy with a beard who hates gays and who sends you to hell if you dont believe in him or forget to confess your sins
by the way, i find it weird that almost 50% of the people here still believe in god, but that probably has to do with the high percentage of americans that visit this site. in europe, religion had a HUGE influence on public life (non-constitunial influence tho) because the largest party (60%+ of the votes) used to be the christian-democrats, and they build, what we call in europe a 'pylon' (yes, its also a sc term) that consisted of unions, lobby groups, bars, hospitals, social securities,... a large portion of the population was a member of one or more organisations of this 'pylon', but after a while (around the end of the seventies) it stopped working well, so a lot of people turned away from both the christian party and the pylon that it had 'build', another consequence of this was that people turned away from church too, so they stopped being religious. now, on a population of 10 million, there are 2 new priests every year. i think from the population from 0-55 years old, only like 10% is religious.

hey guys stop nitpicking
if you believe god exists, press yes if you don't believe he exists, press no. if you believe neither more than the other, don't answer.
it's a very, very simple poll.
|
Norway28673 Posts
pfff that totally depends on your opinion of religious..
FAR more than 10% of europeans between 0 and 55 years believe there is some kind of supernatural force or god or whatever that created the universe, if nothing else through starting the big bang. (believing this does not go against science, as science really has no explanation for what was before the big bang, and hell, big bang is just a theory too. )
in fact, if you had a poll all across europe going "are you religious?" where the possible answers were "yes, very." "yes, slightly" "no", well above 50% would answer one of the first two options.

Google: Onotological Argument
I do not need to google it, I am already aware of the ontological argument . Two points: First, he was not making the ontological argument in any proper sense. Secondly, basically no philosopher takes the ontological argument remotely seriously anymore. Imho, nothing follows logically from someone holding a belief in something.

Well scientists working to the big bang cosmological model dated the age of the universe to billions of years before the bible's stated creation date.
|
Scientists were only able to date back to the bible's interpretation of the date of the creation of humans, not the earth or the universe. (well that was an ugly sentence)

1-I have an idea of supremely perfect being, i.e. a being having all perfections. 2-Necessary existence is a perfection. 3-Therefore, a supremely perfect being exists.
I wasnt aware of this argument so I'll just post it here for others to read it.

Maybe it would be interesting to make another "research only thread" but without poll and asking everyone "their religion".
Not a discussion thread nor a blame thread, just to know what people believe (even thought we already know what a lot of people here think).
Interesting questions maybe :
a) Do you believe in God? a.1) If a) answered yes -> what kind of God do you believe in? Religion? Do you believe in miracles? a.2) If a) answered no, dunno -> Are you atheist? Agnostic?
b) Are you evolucionist? b.1) Do u think it could be posible an earth with less than 10k years old?
c) Did Jesus exist? c.1) If asked yes -> Who do you think He was?
d) Do your parents believe in God? d1) Are they religious?
e) Age?
Maybe other questions would be interesting, dunno, ideas?.
"Just for knowledge's sake" (quoting baal)

I have no idea wether God exists or not, I just can't believe God is what any religion says. Therefore I voted NO.
Wondering about the existence of a perfect being, the meaning of "good" is philosophy. Wondering if there's a God who created mankind a few years ago and will send gays and people who don't go to the church to hell is just stupidity. But since I can't answer the first questions, I answered the last one.

No, *sigh* I was asking you to clarify your own subsequent post, when you said: "Scientists were only able to date back to the bible's interpretation of the date of the creation of humans, not the earth or the universe."
Your post puzzled me because I was rather under the impression that God was supposed to have created the universe and man withing a few days of each other. I also thought that creationists put the creation of the Earth at just a few thousand years ago. Yet the big bang theory, which you claim does not conflict with creationism, suggests that the universe is several billion years old. How do you reconcile all these factors?
Are you trying to claim that scientists do not date the universe at several billions of years?
Still, I suppose if you are 'out' you won't be answering.

religion should be about people, not gods. people deserve more credit than to say that the only way to get people to listen is to tell them stories about gods. i think ppl deserve more credit than that

Hmm.. my bad, I meant to refer to the basic creationist model, putting the creation at just a few thousand years ago. My main point stands though.

how come the most fundamentalistic christians I've talked to always think the earth is less than 10000 years old if there's mention of it in the bible? =/
(note, I'm not saying that the bible states a number or anything. just that if you interpret what the bible is saying literally, then the earth could not be more than 10000 years old, unless people lived for hundreds or thousands of years.)
