I think it is the mostly due to the 1st point. There are people on bnet that recognise me from this forum and I ask them what name they post under. They will usually say they don't post here because there are so many good players that do... what could they possibly add... They are intimidated.

I don't think much can be done to get them posting. It will just take time for them to get comfortable.

Personally i found the 2nd reason the biggest problem, is it really neccesary to be a forum veteran to be heard? Some topics also get filled with garbage which hides the first posts of a new poster and makes him disappear in the dark again. What i noticed for a long time is that the top 10 topics(which makes them appear on the main topic list) get replies alot but when it reaches the 11th position 4 out of 5 are dead.

I think the "veterans" should take the time to make new comers more welcome. I see Klogan doing this often(gj) . In some of the longer discussions, the veterans have been going back and forth about the issue for a long time(political debates been going on for years at this point for example), so many times it is not a real debate, but more of an argument between a small group of people, which tends to not be rather inclusive. Once again, the vets should probably take more time to welcome newcomers, and also structure some discussions to be more open(for example, religous threads often hijacked by obsolete, political threads often hijacked by me and excal, etc.. ) .

Reasons i picked up so far are:
- Many visitors are way better in sc than me and i dont want to be bashed or dont have much to add.
- Topics are going off topic and when i try to add something to a discussion i'm just being ignored.
- I'm just too lazy.

well, all my posts are extremely lazy, obviously. well, almost all of them. whenever i put any effort into a post i usually end up getting banned by rekrul.

ive always had those other problems u mentioned too. topics go so off topic and ppl ignore posts a lot. and i'm also a horrible sc player. i really shouldnt post as much as i do, it's true. but then i see so much fucking spammers and i figure i can do better than that at least. ppl shouldnt be so afraid to ask dumb questions, and really most reactions can be phrased in the form of a question. if u think ensnare is the best thing in the world u could ask why more people dont use it, or why people think it's not worth using etc. if u think people should play a diff map, u can ask people why they dont, etc. of course, sometimes there's a slight quirk in the question and you get a buttload of off topic spam. actualy u get that no mater what. so fuck it. try to find people whose posts are respectable and PM them. now that we have PM that is really the best bet. threads are just fucking shit because infinite amount of ppl are allowd to contribute and the discussion always completely spins off in a dozen directions, which leads me to a thesis i did not forsee as i was typing this: a forum where threads can be created such that only a specific list of persons (modifyable by the creator of the thread) may contribute (but all can read) would create works of art. there would be challenges and obstacles with such a feature but once people learned to use it properly we would end up with a lot more nice threads to read.

Alot of new posters also like to post their opinions, and some may sound stupid about what they say just because they didn't word it properly, and one admin won't like it, and that person gets banned.

I read this site for a year and a half fearing I would get banned if I posted anything. -_-

well, it can go both ways. while ppl who are scared _can_ be careful to phrase their opinions in ways less likely to incite hatred, an obligation can also be put onto readers to be patient enough to interpret "moronic" comments into something more acceptable such as an innocent question. this is something i personally would like to learn to do. im too impatient with those who consistently provide unintelligent responses; i get frustrated because i feel as though there is nothing more i can post to them (adequate arguments are already provided and they are being ignored) and i do not want to try to .. spoon feed what has already been posted to them in a simple enough language (with visual aids) to help them understand. but it would be better for me to not respond at all than to get pissed and flame them
