That actually makes perfect sense. The left side of that series can be described by

F(N) = (F(N-1)- (N-1)) * 10 + 8N + N

You take the previous number and remove the addition at the end of it, N-1. Multiply That number by 10. Then you add add 8*N making the left part go from 12, to 123, 1234, etc. Finally you add N again. Simplify that equation and you get

F(N) = (F(N-1)- (N-1)) * 10 + 8N + N
F(N) = 10 * F(N-1) – 10N + 10 + 8N
F(N) = 10 * F(N-1) + 10 – N

Essentially you're just taking the number above it, moving it 1 space to the left, and adding the next digit in the series.

so

90 + 10 - 2 = 98
980 + 10 - 3 = 987
