it took her 10 minutes to make a single cut, slicing the board into 2 pieces, at the 33.33% mark. it would then take another 10 minutes to make an exactly identical cut at the 66.67% mark. 1 | 2 | 3 where each "|" is a slice. 2 cuts, 10 min each

Didn't your school teach you have steroids?? ![]()

And for the obligatory pic ![]()

Referencing the image below, #1 - This is the information provided to the student. The board takes 10 min to cut in one direction, but doesn't give any details about the other dimension of the board #3 - This is how the student came up with 20 minutes. Two vertical slices to cut the board into even thirds #2 - This would take longer than 10 minutes #4 and #5 - I THINK this is what the teacher thinks the student is being asked. This is the simplest way I could get cutting 3 pieces to 15 minutes. If we cut the square board one way, then cut one of those halves in the other direction, the second cut will take half as long since the piece is half as thick as the original. (assuming cutting and distance are related like that). Note that in this case the three pieces are not the same size. Also i think the teacher's "pattern" is wrong. Looks like for every additional piece, the time goes up by 5 minutes. This is only correct for a certain number of pieces if she is cutting it like the images shown in #4/#5, but as you keep going, if you keep cutting stuff in half, the times will change with increasingly smaller pieces. (the cutting times wouldn't change if you kept cutting like in #3. In that case the teacher's 3 pieces in 15 minutes would be wrong) #6 - Also, the question doesn't state that the pieces have to be equal size. So really you could cut two small corners off and it would take way less than 10 minutes. ![]() Anyways, I think it's poorly worded and because of the lack of information we can't tell who's right. Also I think I way over analyzed this lol ![]()

Those were exactly my thoughts. Poor question, there is too many possible ways to "cut a slice" ? of who knows what dimension board
