There's been threads about this as well.

I'm a Steven King fan, I'd recommend 'The Shining'.

if youre into political science i suggest the future of freedom by fareed zakaria and world on fire by amy chua. their views about democratization and marketization are intriguing. like, zakaria says there is too much democracy and the us should be run more like the eu or the wto. chua's view on market-dominant ethnic minorities and the spawn of ethnic hatred is also interesting.

dont you mean animal farm?

i read that book when i was 9 years old, not understanding the deeper meaning. i thought it was just a silly book with animals talking and found it amusing.

of course i reread it after i was told what the book really meant.

The picture of Dorian Gray - Oh man I loved this one, not really a funny book but some parts are very amusing.
And most books from Kafka are weird but really nice.

EDIT: 1984 is indeed an amazing book

StarCraft Manual ^_^

Enders Game, nearly everything by Raymond E. Feist(?), Wars of Light and Shadow, Discworld(You will so be LYAO!), Lots of others :-)

Just because you can now store where everyone was and is, what they like, what they fear who they talk to and who they love. It does not mean we should so spy upon our fellow man in a dystopia far worse then 1984

A lot of the books I like have been mentioned (1984, Farenheit 451, The hitchikers guide to the galaxy, discworld, the Tolkien books) so my list will be short:

Speed of dark - by Elizabeth Moon. About someone with authism in the near future - a really awesome book.

Brave new world - Was kinda good - 1984 was better though.

MOMO - or the battle of time. Now I know this is a book meant for kids, and that it was a while ago since I read it.. but it was one of the most awesome books I had read when I did!

Number 9 dream - the best book I have ever read, no question about it!

Watership down - absolutely great

Cats cradle - Kurt Vonnegut
Breakfast of Champions - Kurt Vonnegut
Slaughterhouse 5 - Kurt Vonnegut
Differant Seasons - Stephan King (This book has 4 differant short stories, Apt Pupil is the best one)
Siddhartha - Hermann Hesse
To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee
Watership Down - Richard Adams

Just my personal favorites, though I really want to read the Dark Tower serias because everyone says they are really really good. All the books above are great but I really recommend Breakfast of Champions, Slaughterhouse 5, and Watership down - like FA says, this book is absolutely great!

Yea this is so good, don't miss it. I started reading like 2 months ago, and am now on book ten. You get so addicted, its crazy.

Also pick up the first dragonlance three book set if you like fantasy. I take for granted you already read lotr, and silmarillion is even better, if possible.

Other books you should read:
The Alkymist
Don Quijote
Interview with the Vampire

The Power of One- Bryan Courtenay, or something like that. Very good book, one of the best I've ever read.

If you're into the Civil Right's movement in America, then Once Upon a Time in Mississippi is a good book. Don't recall the author's name, sadly.

The Lovely Bones was an excellent book.

Lord of the Flies

Fahrenhite 451

Where the Red Fern Grows- Kind of a little kids book, but it's sooo good.
I'm never gonna know you now \ But I'm gonna love you anyhow.

Apparently MilkyZerg idolizes me, so I feel obligated to reccommend a couple books.

Starship Troopers - Robert Heinlen

Pure Genius

Animal Farm, 1984 - George Orwell

Mentioned before, great books. I recomend Animal Farm first because it gets you used to Orwell's style

One other book advice, don't read Lord of the Flies expecting it to be good, it's not.

Ones I didn't notice listed (and can't believe they're not!) :

I, Robot
Catspaw (the epitome of not judging a book by it's gay ass cover, unless it's been changed )
Neuromancer
Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?
Catcher in the Rye
The Fountainhead
To Kill A Mockingbird
Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal
The Left Hand of Darkness (be warned, there's very little "action" in the book if you like that sort of thing)
The Stars My Destination

There was an article in a magazine called "InQuest" named "100 Books Thou Shalt Read Before You Die"...was a very solid list for fiction/fantasy/sci-fi fans, if you can find it.

I just read "Life of Pi", by Yann Martel and very highly recommend it.

It was a gift given to me last year and I failed to get into it. Thankfully a few days ago I got bored. It was the best book for me in a long time, so I got lucky. If any of you get it and have trouble getting into it, give it 50 pages, but some people will not appreciate it until page 305 or so, but it is well worth it.

The Stranger by Albert Camus. It has some intellectual value which is what most of those listed above lack.

I have a whole page of books I've read lately that I've reviewed:

http://www.araxas.com/books.html

I'd recommend any of the ones I gave 4 or 5 stars

Ender's game, Ender's Shadow, Speaker for the Dead, Xenocide, Shadow of the Hegemond, Shadow Puppets. All good books. Oh and they are all the same series.

Oh! and believe it or not, but the bible is a good book! really!
