I haven't found any polls, at least within the last few months, that were on Facebook usage so I posted this.
I'm curious as to how many of you use Facebook, and, furthermore, applications on it.
Poll: Do you use it? (Vote): Often; A few times a day. (Vote): Sometimes; A few times a week. (Vote): Rarely; A few times a month. (Vote): No.
The reason behind my curiosity is because I'm looking into developing some small Facebook applications that are at least StarCraft related. I merely just want to attempt a simple enough application just to get my feet wet in the Facebook application development process. So if you have any ideas for a SC application, then please feel free to let your idea run wild in this topic.
Poll: Do you use applications on Facebook? (Vote): I have more than I can count. (Vote): Only the popular ones (ie. FarmVille, Mafia Wars). (Vote): A few of them. (Vote): No; they're annoying.

Almost everyone i know in the 15-25 age uses facebook. Some obviously more than others.
|
I check it daily, but "use" it a couple of times a week.
|
|
I'm using it, but im too lazy to write anything = =#
|
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Denmark has the highest amount of Facebook users per citizen... I use it? Somewhat, anyway.
|
|
no i dont, here in germany its much less spread in comparison to USA anyway i think
|
in Sweden Facebook's huge
|
Here in Spain the young people use another website, called tuenti.
|
i'm using fb, but the only app i use there are typing mania and texas hold 'em poker. but i'm curious to play an app that is sc-related. good luck on your plan, it seems that only few people here in TL are facebooking.
|
All I hear is "English, do you speak it?" Ya, I use facebook. Most ppl do these days.
|
I use it everyday multiple times :[ never bother with any apps, a lot of the quizzes and shit people somehow automatically or manually send me are really annoying, but I have to admit some of the games like bejeweled and typing mania look really good although I don't play any.
|
No. I absolutely despise this phenomenon. Everyone here, where I live has it. It is annoying. Instead of giving phone numbers, or names in instant messengers everyone just says "I'll add you in facebook". On top of that there's always some random people that add you, that you met while partying and drunk as fuck and other people that just "saw you a few times" or friends of friends of that girl's sister that you danced with. And if you don't add them they'll tell all people you both know and you'll be given awkward looks/ be considered as anti-social.
I always had a problem with these kind of "socialising" sites. It always seemed to me like it's violating privacy. People post about what they do, at what time(like twitter), who they date with, what they think/feel etc. To me it's just a drama queen and/or celebrity complex. Now I know there are people not looking for attention there, just chilling and getting in touch with friends, sharing some funny party pics etc. I respect that.
|
I use it mostly for Farmville.. it's gotten a bit boring.. or maybe I've gotten a bit boring.
|
took me a while but once i got on it its ok. i just avoid the mindless mini games and spam. re connected with lots of old friends.
|
10 years ago these sites were merely for angsty teenage girls.
|
I check it like 4000 times an hour...
|
I use it all the time, i never use applications though, the only thing i hate more than those applications are the people that despise Facebook because it's mainstream and because it makes you a rebel when you're against it. All the excuses i have heard from people that hate Facebook are rediculous.
If people you don't know add you, don't accept them if it's such a huge problem. It's not violating your privacy unless you choose to reveal stuff that you want to keep private. It's your own fault for having drama queens in your friendslist that update their status every 5min.
Facebook is a great way to stay in touch with friends when you don't have the time to talk to everyone on the phone/msn/skype/whatever all day.
|
It's actually much better than IMs and phone numbers. You can even find old friends from the past whose numbers you didn't bother asking for.
|
The only good thing about Facebook is the fact that you can connect with other people you have met/associated with in the past. I have met some friends I haven't talked to in a loooong time, which is great. Other than that, I don't really use it. I prefer texting or IM.
I really don't like the idea of applications/quizzes because...it's stupid? Waste of time and no one wants to know what personality you have or what you scored on a typing speed game.
What I don't understand is people who CONSTANTLY use Facebook. I mean, seriously? I walk into my school library and like one out of every three people are on that site.
|
I use it alot.
Finding old friends is always insane. When I get friend requests from people I was good friends with like 10 years ago it's always a blast from the past.
|
I plan on getting an account, but I'll check it once or twice a week/month. A lot of people I know spend several hours daily there. Its quite bizarre to still be doing that when you're 20+.
|
Zulu and I, as well as quite a few other people had a nice discussion on IRC about facebook. Despite that, I still use it. Often times I have friends, even ones I see all the time, that simply don't communicate through instant messaging. If I want to talk to them outside of school, facebook is the most convenient, next to physically meeting up with them.

My (now ex-) gf is obsessed with facebook (and the German equivalent StudiVZ), she sent me a FB invite way back. I registered and pretty much never logged in again. A few weeks ago my brother added me and then two cousins as well (probably because my brother had them as friends already), I don't think I would have ever noticed if it weren't for the automatic FB friend request emails.
So..., I have an account with a handful of people in it, but I don't use it.
|
I use it, but only because everyone else I know does.
|
I'm gonna find out who you are and add all of you!
|
I think Facebooks is a bit annoying as well. Sure it's a great way to keep in touch with people but I don't give a fuck about what everyone is doing all the time
|
i use it to connect to my friends and relatives.but i am a bit annoyed with all the applications there plus my facebook account kills my mail inbox.
|
I use it so I don't forget about people.
|
Duh, of course. Creating parties/events is the biggest relief with facebook. Don't know how I managed before that.
|
I use it, but the only application i really enjoy is that music game.
|
no , but im thinking of re-opening my account is it like myspace where you can link people to your music and such
|
i hate all the invites i get from everyone else joining stupid groups or playing apps
|
I must be the last person in Sweden that doesn't use Facebook. From the beginning I didn't get it because I thought it was overhyped and didn't bother. But I'm aware of the many benefits to connect with old friends and stay in touch etc etc.
So why don't I sign up now? Because in the EULA that nooooone reads it states that Facebook have the "rights" to all your uploaded photos and other stuff related to your account.
I think FB has some privacy concerns. And for the other sake do you want your future employer to collect data about you and find out some nasty things just becuase u wanted to be a "facebooker" back in the days. There are already opensource apps out who can after a namesearch pair you with various things and sites you have been member of.
Give me some pros about FB so I can sign up?
|
I use it when I have to message someone and I don't have their email or phone number.
So...rarely.
EDIT: However, to answer all the FB naysayers in this thread, when the above situation comes up, it is usually trivial to find them on FB so I can talk to them. I know it has saved me many times.
|
Didn't used for most of the time it was "the thing" to use.
then when I got my iPhone, everything changed. Damn Facebook app.
|
I do not use services such as Facebook and MySpace. Unlike modern society, I do not believe in self-promotion.
My sister is obsessed with it, though. She even plays this Facebook game called Restaurant Life and even calls me to put food in the oven when she is not at home. -.-

true true true, sooo true.
Also great for managing artist profiles and creating a cimmunity around them, as well as networking in general. If i want to get DJ feedback i just find them on facebook instead of looking for an email thats impossible to find.

|
I log on about 5 minutes a day. I cant understand how people can spent hours on it.
|
I had an account, but stopped using it a long time ago. Facebook is just a waste of time. Yes, its true that you find friends you have lost connection with, but if they were really that good friends you would have never lost contact in the first place
|
I'm in high school so...duh.
I probably have it open 100% of the time that I'm on the computer, but not because I actually care about any notifications or shit like that, but facebook chat is just very very useful. It's like aim was....except everyone you know is automatically online and they don't have retarded screen names.
If they released an app (not a facebook app, like a real one), that just was straight up facebook chat without any network issues or anything, it would basically obliterate aim/msn/any other protocol. I have easily 100+ people online on weeknights even on a bad day.
|
Sometimes. Facebook whoring is boring.
|
I've been forced to use it since some people cant be found anywhere else. Really clueless to why people opt to use facebook over some instant messenger.
|
I find facebook to be a misleading piece of shit program. People will be in contact with people they never even talk to in real life at all, but have full conversations over the internet with. If you wanna talk to me, fucking call me!
You could make the same argument for forums, but there is alot more to a forum than just dumb conversations about jack shit. Hi, whats up? how was your weekend? did you go to the mountains? cool? stfu and call me biatch.

I have logged onto my facebook account like 3 times in the last 2 years

Same here. I honestly don't know what people do on it for more than hours. Quizzes? Applications? Looking at photos? I really don't know. One of my friends stays up till 5am on facebook.

Facebook is a very useful social networking tool, and is kind of pointless to resist. It's useful, and it doesn't demand much time.
And farmville is the devil.

I have a facebook and a myspace. I only have them because for each a friend of mine begged me and bugged me to get an account on it. I have been using facebook like each day often just because of the friend quiz thing, though I'm slowing down on it. It use to find it useless but now its kinda something to do if I am bored.
|
The only thing I find it semi-useful for is to remember people's birthdays. Other than that, there's really nothing much to do on it.
Though what I do find annoying is that half of my school's biggest computer center is infested with Facebook users playing Farmville while I'm actually trying do to work.

I use facebook all the time, however I don't really use applications.

i use it to play scrabble, and thats about it.

Fuck the applications. Ignore all that shit. But I do feel like Facebook is a decent way to stay in touch with those you knew back in the days, see what's up with them these days.

I usually only check it when I have a facebook email. All those god damn apps are annoying as hell, I fucking hate them -_-

Farmville was interesting, but it lost its touch after I would spam raspberries on my entire farm constantly for around 20,000 gold a week. Very lucrative, but I had to individually click on each field and re-plow it after, and I plowed my entire field!

I use facebook rarely, i don't see much purpose in it as those social networking sites all die within a few years.

Applications can go die. If Facebook Purity didn't exist, I'd probably have left a long time ago.

Honestly, no, never used it once in my life. Everytime friends or people I might say, "Whats your facebook?" I reply that I dont have it or use it and always get a weird look. For whatever reason, I just never created an account, nor felt the need.

It's really distracting when im doing work on the computer. between tl and facebook, i basically have to pull out my ethernet cord if i want to get any work done.
And to the people that have issues with the privacy policies of fb, just be mindful of it, jesus. Don't put pictures of yourself smoking weed or anything else compromising. You're missing out on a great social opportunity by casting it aside.
|
I use facebook ONLY for the apps. Mafia wars (and such) is kinda like an MMORPG flash game, and if I have to register to facebook to get it... Sure, why not.
|
I use it. It's a good way to keep tabs on not-so-close friends you haven't seen/talked to in a while.
|
Everyone go try Bejeweled 2 Blitz mode, its fun and requires speed and focus.
|
Even my dad uses it and he's pretty clueless about computer trends.
I don't though, I don't see the point. I use MSN to stay in touch with my friends, what else could I possibly need.
|
i find it funny so many people don't use facebook here... it's ironic if anything...
|
Teamliquid is a better place for friends.
|
i don't use it, i'm one of the only people i know who dont have it. i guess if you're super introverted there's really no need for it ;D

It literally took somebody dying for me to log in to my Facebook.

I don't believe the poll. I guarantee that 50% of the people on this site not using Facebook is false.

I have a Facebook account, but I only made it to join our Campaign Creations usergroup. Other than that I don't use it. I don't really have a need to use it. I talk to everyone I know on AIM, anyway, so there's no point. :\

I hate facebook. I am on it because my friends convinced me to get it so they could contact me. I use it very rarely, pretty much only if I need to get a hold of someone and I feel the reason doesnt justify a phone call and I dont have them on MSN. I dont use it for anything else. I hate the stupid news feed and the dumb applications.
|
Its useful when organizing parties and things. Not that email can't be used for the same thing, but now you know everyone who's going and there's a place to put all the pics and things and discuss it afterwards
|
It's that same with all those social portals like facebook or myspace or some german pages, I register and for the first 2 weeks I actually do something but then i just stop using them. I see most people that I care about every week and have all of them in IM and the people I don't care about...well why bother reading their updates or writing them?
|
Its an incredibly useful utility for keeping in touch with old freinds, correct.
For everything from setting up events with people who live far away when your going to visit. Extremely useful.
For example , i'm going home for christmas and i've set up an event at a bar , with 40 of my old freinds. :D
Let the good times roll.
Saying that , there is a ridiculous amount of aplications which are completely useless and that keep people obsessed.
|
For those that think Facebook is a waste, I used to think the same, too, but recently FB has turned out to be a very good gaming platform for the broadest audience. It is much more than just the social networking. It's a great place to find some great/fun/addicting games to play for those that rather not pay for games and/or have to constantly upgrade their computers, AND at the same time want to play something other than StarCraft (should that sadly ever happen).
|
I personally think Facebook gets more useful the older you get. Once folks get employed, married, and move all over the place its hard to stay in touch like you did in college.

Does anyone else think that the old facebook's layout like 2-3 years ago was better than the new one? I certainly thought it was.
|
The new layout and the old layout doesn't really make a difference to me...I hated the spaz when they changed it. It's not that it's worse but it's just new and took awhile to get used to. That's all.
And yea. I use facebook just about everyday :3
|
I like staying in touch with friends but I don't like staying THAT in touch. No facebook for me.
|
I use FB and MS probably 1-3 times a week. I really hate all those annoying applications and people's spam posts about them needing people to help them water plants in farmland. Or people spamming messages to get me to join their mafia. Fuck you.

Well I recently decided to stop using Facebook frequently, meaning I would only check it a few times a month, other than that I stopped being active on it. I find it is a waste of time. I only use it to keep in touch with old friends or acquaintences so that I don't forget them. I recently wrote an entry on my Xanga about why I decided to not use Facebook much anymore. It's long and I'll put it it in spoiler tag.
+ Show Spoiler + First, I have grown tired of Facebook limitation of 420 characters per wall post. With 420 characters that roughly translates to about 5 to 6 typical length sentences to form a small paragraph. I am a person who likes to dilate his thoughts when writing an "update, blog, status(facebook)." Seriously, why doesn't Facebook just buy out Twitter and merge with it? I know that there seems to be a limitless on how much characters you can use in 1 reply to a wall post on Facebook, however it SUCKS not being able to express more than 420 characters when you starts your own status wall post. I struggled many freaken times to fit my words into a single status update to the point where my English sentence syntax becomes broken and it was hard to make things comprehensible.
Secondly, the reason is due to the cause-effect of reason 1. I want write an entry or status update to express my day and feelings, and I can't stand Facebook limitation. I want to dilate all the feelings into my entries or updates because I want to keep a timeline of my life--a personal biography if you will. I really don't care who reads it or not. All I care is it's my life story and if anyone want to read it, I'd be happy to share or they can just leave my page. The personal biography is so that I can have something to reflect on in the future and see how my life has progess and such and perhaps lessons to take heed as I have from reading 2004-2005 entries. I felt that Facebook does not offer me that.
Third, I do not like the fact that people has to update their status every few bloody hours as if they think Facebook is Twitter. I don't want to see my home page with multiple status updates from a single person every few hours; it just flood the screen. One or two updates a day on Facebook is enough, not a whole mess. I'm not that mean to delete people like that, but I just think it's freaken silly that Facebook is actually another form of Twitter. I joined Facebook a few months back and did not realize it was just another form of Twitter. I could ignore the home page and just pay attention to my profile page(where my personal wall posts and other people's posts on my wall), but then what would be the point of joining Facebook in the first place for? Not to mention it makes less of the fun to not read others' thoughts on their statuses if I just ignored the home page and I don't want to sit there clicking on each person's profile to go directly to their page to check their statuses on their walls. This is not a whining on this small issue, but it is just my experience with Facebook and my opinion.
I'll still continue to log in Facebook to keep in touch with some people, but I won't be really spending too much times on it anymore because of the limitation and issues that I have with it.
Anyways, due to those reasons I went back to Xanga. I'm sure some people will disagree with my reasons, but that's just my opinions. I guess I had the wrong ideas before using Facebook thinking that you can blog on it and stuffs, but it's not a blog site, it's a freaken Social Networking site. Oh, wells.

I was in facebook before it went boom, and it was nicer... nothing bad about the page, is just a personal thing. I use facebook from time to time when I have to, because there are some people that I can just communicate by sending pm's there. -.-

Haven't read the whole thread but seeing at the app question was in the OP here is a fun app by the ACLU
Unless you completely block applications in your privacy settings you are vulnerable to apps doing some data mining and here is the real kicker you don't even have to be the one to run it you're friends put you at risk.
You think you set your privacy right? But you didn't unless you have no 3rd party apps it's impossible to acutely set your privacy to completely block apps from accessing your data.
Don't think what you put on facebook can't hurt you just look up how many people have been denied a job or fired for posting their activity on facebook.

i use facebook like crazy... i enjoy it, seeing what other people are up to.. etc (dont lie, everyone stalks people on facebook ;D).
|
Facebook is really great it centralizes a lot of things that I would otherwise be doing anyways like sharing pictures/videos with family and friends and planning events. Communicating through notes, videos, picture albums, statuses, etc. is easy and fun.
Plus everyone has a facebook. I really only know a few people who don't have it and they're the type who don't have it just so they can say they don't have it so they can say they're not conforming.

Mafia Wars is actually pretty fun once you get into it. This one guy and I have been having an epic feud. Almost everyday he tries to get his mafia to attack me. I understand all those updates must be annoying for those who don't play though.
|
Barely use FB. only to work on projects, get in touch with some ppl. oh and my long running inbox message thats 4000+ msgs long
|
i started using it about half a year after it became super popular since i loathed these kind of websites like myspace etc. thought it was only for attention whores and such. But now im like "wtf would i do without this?" It has become a nessesary luxury for me, just like my mobile phone. I get shivers when i think about when i had to text like 30 people to get a party going :p

Facebook is good for stalking people, little else.

Not stalking, just market research.

That's what I love about this site. I've gotten into contact with so many people from elementary school and stuff. It's pretty amazing.

Gosh it's really interesting reading the replies of people who aren't American. It's pretty much universal at an American college.

Ugh...no. Is this some kind of hi5 shit? (no offense lol)

If you replace Facebook with "my/your dick" it makes this thread so much better.

Oh, wells. use the notes feature? also you can integrate xanga with facebook so that your xanga posts get automatically uploaded as notes on your facebook page.

I only use it a few times a month. I also played dumb farmville when I had no job just because it gave me shit to do when I couldn't really do anything because I was poor. But now I don't play it.

anyone who says facebook isnt useful is using it incorrectly or doesnt know how to use it to their advantage.
if you dont like the apps or notifications, you can fix them in the settings. show more of these notifications, fewer of these, etc. apps, you can just block em. it's annoying, but that cant be helped.
and i have no idea what this farmville is, but apparently people love it. i dont wanna play it because i might get hooked
|
i used facebook a lot last year, but it's gotten progressively more annoying with all the apps and games.
.. though I did play farmville religiously for a whole week lol.

If they release the same thing for free but only for sex encounter i'm one, or else i find it kind of pointless. Of course i have plenty of people that i didn't see for ages that i could find on it, but what for? They are past now. Facebook, it's like chewing the same shit everyday. Time goes on...

It's huge in New Zealand. I use it sometimes to just see if anything interesting has happened. I can't understand how people can spend so much time on apps like Mafia Wars and farmville.
