As far as TL being worth hundreds of thousands of dollars: I'm a bit skeptical as to the legitimacy of this claim. Who would buy teamliquid for $200k +? Nothing is worth anything without a buyer. Anybody remember the south park episode where all the big internet memes were arguing about how much theoretical money they were worth? Furthermore, that value has to come from somewhere, and I have trouble believing it's generated entirely by the adds for the ASL and "Gratuitous Space Battles" up at the top of the page.

Top 15 viewed sites in USA are mostly porn/weird. As funny as it may be to believe this.. there is no way all these sites trump the likes of yahoo and google (surely google, with its porn searching abilities would be higher on this list). As i'm disinclined to accept there is any truth in their top15 list, i'm also very skeptical of their figures regarding how much a given site is worth. Sounds like they have a vague idea of a sites hits, multiply it by some bullshit coefficient and viola. Teamliquid is worth well over 200k.

I've used them in the past and it said some website I was running with a couple friends was worth like 300$. There's no way anyone would have ever paid 300$ for the site I had. Its more of matching them up by popularity I guess, but even then I prefer google trends (yes I know trends is based off search queries and not visits to the site, but still)

Because the posters are transferable and the archive is copyable. If the contributors are regarded as assets belonging to teamliquid that'd be one thing but if they're just customers who enjoy the teamliquid brand then you could sell the brand while moving them to a new one. It'd be a lot of hassle to promote a new name but 200k spent on community events out to get the name out there and make everything alright.

If you estimate that TL earns $10 per day now and an amount per day that scales with the interest rate for the next 20 years (a lifetime for websites), then you would get the more modest $73,000 as the present value for TL.

TL doesn't have any tangible value (code, employees, products, etc), TL is a meeting place for many people everyday. Anytime you have an established place with a reputation there is the potential to make money. Any TL buyer would be buying the TL brand and meeting place. Potential buyers I talked to in the past did not understand that and simply looked at the tangible assets. That being said, I think people who volunteer time here value the place and work far more highly than what someone would be willing to pay for it. Also, so many people have spent so much time on it, how do you split up the money? Naz and Meat could take it all, but they aren't those kind of people. Where is the cut off for "you deserve something", and "you don't deserve something". There isn't really. That is some of the same thinking that prevents us from paying people to contribute. Where do you draw these lines? These are just some of my thoughts on the issue of "value" and TL, something I have given a lot of thought to.

With that being said, anyone willing to sell TL.net for only 233k must be out of their minds.

Also wonder how much goes into running this site. I wouldn't be the one to ask, but I believe that $319.21 of daily ads revenue is estimated from the number of pageviews daily and is not TL's actual earnings per day. If you estimate that TL earns $10 per day now and an amount per day that scales with the interest rate for the next 20 years (a lifetime for websites), then you would get the more modest $73,000 as the present value for TL. That site, WebSiteOutlook, is a joke. I co-founded an website and founded another one and so am somewhat familiar with these kinds of things (not to be cocky but I also have degrees and work experience in economics and finance so picked some stuffs about business valuation). The site basically multiplies the pageviews of an website with a fixed CPM (cost per mille, which is how much advertisers pay to an website for a thousand impressions...I think the site uses $3 CPM) to determine the valuation. And such valuation is wrong for many reasons. First, websites might not serve ads on every page. Second, obviously different websites sell ads based on different CPM or CPC (cost-per-click, which derives from CPM and click-through-rate). Third, business valuation should take account future profits, which the site doesn't do at all. Etc. Basically one of the sites that serve interesting, eye-catching info with no substance....unlike TL!!!
