The opening round has come and gone with an unexpectedly large amount of votes. Despite some people's suspicions, the top 5 was actually fairly competitive (not a single contestant had zero votes and the fourth and fifth place spots were decided by a single vote). Although the five contestants that will advance to the next round are as follows (in no particular order):
mikeymoo - Andy Lau Last.Midnight - Genie In A Bottle uNcontrollable - Bring Me To Life GTR - 7989 Holgerius - Yesterday

Team Liquid Idol comes alive for its much-anticipated opening season in October 2009. Hosted by me, Falcynn, this forum's soon to be No. 1 hit series empowers contestants and viewers to share their voices in deciding who will be Team Liquid's next singing superstar! This opening season promises to deliver amazing, undiscovered talent with plenty of surprises along the way.
The Rules (subject to change)
-You can sing to any song you prefer. However you must provide the backing track (or sing a capella if you prefer), and the track must not contain any vocals. All vocals included in the final product must come mostly from yourself. Limited back-up vocals are okay if you can't find anything better. If you find something you feel is questionable, submit it anyways (chances are I'll allow it).
-You will send the music file to ME. I'll be accepting e-mail submissions only. TLidolContest at gmail dot com. You may post your song in this thread or wherever you'd like if you want to share it with everyone prior to the voting, but to officially enter you need to email me. This is mostly to make it easier for me to keep everything organized. In the e-mail, make sure you include your username.
-If you can't sing, submit anyways! It'll make this contest a lot more interesting to hear all ranges of singing talents from all of the posters.
-All languages welcome! No rules as to what/how you can sing, as long as the vocals supplied in your music track is 100% yours, then you can do whatever you want. While I'd prefer it if you didn't go crazy dubbing a shitload of vocal tracks on top of each other, doing crazy chorus effects, and auto-tuning, I'm not going to disallow them at this time.
-At the end of your recording (or beginning if you prefer), you must make a quick blurb mentioning Team Liquid. This is probably the easiest way to make sure that all entries are legit. I doubt anyone would try to cheat this contest, but as it's a fairly simple step, there shouldn't be any harm in it.
-If you want to submit multiple submissions, then I'd suggest you to go ahead and do it, but in the email, tell me which one will be your primary submission. So if there's a huge wave of contestants entering and I have to drop the limit to one per person, I'll still know right away which ones to keep.
- The DEADLINE IS October 17 16:00 TL time. After this time has passed, I'll set up a voting thread ASAP with all songs in a .rar file along with youtube links where you can stream them all easily (I hope for this contest, people will excuse the poorer quality of youtube audio).
-Once the voting thread is up, you may submit your votes to the email provided above listing your top 3 singers (no voting for yourselves!) and I'll post the winners one week from the time of the voting thread being posted.
Happy singing and good luck!
You may all still choose and find your own song if you prefer, however if you don't feel like looking around, or you can't decide, here's a .rar file of a few instrumentals I found fairly quickly. + Show Spoiler [Track List] +
1. One Republic - Apologize 2. Disney - Beauty and the Beast 3. Paramore - Crushcrushcrush 4. Jay Sean - Down 5. Survivor - Eye of the Tiger 6. Outkast - Hey Ya 7. Linkin Park - In The End 8. Metallica - Master of Puppets 9. Pokemon - Pokemon Theme (full song, not just the 30 second intro) 10. Beyonce - Single Ladies

You can find them all over online if you look hard enough. Probably the main reason I put the deadline out for so long away, since I know it'll be a bitch for people to find a backing track to a song they want.
Or if people prefer, we can just have a batch of preselected songs (karaoke versions of pop songs are easy to find) and have people sing to those.

I would appreciate a list of preselected songs. I'm having trouble deciding what to sing at the moment =/

I hope this takes off - it'll be so fun and hilarious if it does. I am tempted to join in, but only if I can sing in Korean. I can do a duet with Hwanni from eSTRO - we did Epik High's Love, Love, Love in the noraebang before.

OP says Korean's fine, but duets may require a rule change.
I'm all in favor of any rule changes that make this more entertaining (including letting people post their entries in the thread. Fairness is overrated ).

Bonus points if you do the Korean version and imitate the bad Engrish lines they inserted.

eh that's true, since this'll probably end up being a lot sillier than BotB I guess keeping the vote as fair as possible probably shouldn't be a huge concern.
Don't know how to deal with duets. If it's two TLers doing a duet together, I think that should be perfectly fine. As for duets with non-TLers (just talking generally right now) I think that'll need some more discussion. I'm not officializing anything, but for now I'd be alright with it. Although we'll cross that bridge once we get to it.
Edit: okay, I edited the rules just now saying it's alright to share your song prior to the voting. I still require people to email me though, just to make it easier to keep track of all the songs/contestants.

So, I was thinking that we could still allow everyone to choose their own song, but have a preselected batch of songs for people to choose from in case they can't decide or are too lazy to find one. I started searching for songs to put into this preselected list, but noticed that generally every karaoke version of a song I could find had backing vocals on either the chorus or during the bridge like this one + Show Spoiler +
I'm pretty dead set on keeping this contest to utilizing only the contestants voices, however if I have a large enough demand to change, I may. For now though I'm still keeping the rule that all vocals have to be supplied by the contestant, just bringing up something that may or may not become an issue down the road.

Alright, at the end of the OP I included the .rar file of 10 instrumentals. You may still choose your own songs though, this is just for people who don't want to look around or can't decide on a song.

I don't think you understand what auto-tune can do. Used excessively, you get the T-Pain effect, but used minimally, you can make an average singer sound much better based solely on the basis that they are in tune. Auto-tune should be banned, but there really isn't any way to enforce it, since someone who actually knows auto-tune knows how to hide the fact that it's used.

Oh...hmmm...yeah, that could be a problem.
Not really sure what to do about that though, if they use autotune excessively enough that it's noticeable, they probably won't get many votes due to many of the users here not liking it. Although, if as you said, they due it subtly and well enough that it makes the person sound like a naturally talented singer, then it is an unfair advantage...but there's no real way to catch them if they do it that well.
I'm hoping people will stick to the spirit of this contest and just have fun with it, rather than taking it too seriously and trying to cheat.
If anyone can find a karaoke version of Beyond the Game I'm definitely doing that. Otherwise I have some other songs in mind.
EDIT: I support a move to allow karaoke tracks with limited vocals in bridges. Having to hunt down only tracks with absolutely no vocals needlessly limits options. For example I considered singing Jyongri's Lullaby for You, but the official instrumental track that came with the single has harmonizing vocals at some points. Simply searching on google and youtube offers no full-length alternatives.
Okay, now that I've given it some more thought, I guess limited backing vocals are fine. As long as your voice is easily heard over them and it doesn't last for more than say...half the song, I'll allow it.
If you have something you feel is questionable, then just post you singing to it and I'll decide if it's acceptable (chances are I'll probably say it's fine. Worst case scenario, people won't agree with my decision, in which case they probably won't vote for the submission in question, negating any perceivable advantage).
As you guys probably realized if you saw Husky's blog, I just made up this contest on a whim and am revising the rules as I go along.
if there's any english song instrumentals, both with and without backing vocals, it should be on this site. it costs 2 dollars per instrumental though.
I have quite a list of instrumentals myself, both english and korean songs, i'll post the list up here later when i have more time
When I saw the video picture I thought ehh interesting idea but doesn't seem tooo funny. I was actually lolling most of the time hahaha. Soo good this gets my vote.
I think you should have people shoutout teamliquid before or during the song for validity purposes. I also think that everyone should sing the same song and that song should be Beyond the Game.

Good idea. I'll add it in to the rules. As for the two people (Husky and Last.Midnight) who already emailed me, I'll allow them to keep their original entries official if they want since I already have confirmation that they're legit.
For all future entries however, just a quick blurb at the end (or beginning if you prefer) mentioning Team Liquid will be required.
Prolly depends on the number of entries. Too few and there's no point to having more than one round; too many and we'd pretty much need to have more rounds.
On September 29 2009 11:14 SonuvBob wrote: Prolly depends on the number of entries. Too few and there's no point to having more than one round; too many and we'd pretty much need to have more rounds.
This is what I'm thinking. I didn't mention how many rounds we'd do since I wanted to see how well the turn out would be before deciding.
Haha, I may get around to doing this sometime. Beyond The Game is a classic song. I'll maybe give that a go. I don't get to hear my singing voice back like, ever. Wonder what totrture I'm putting on others.
Also, I think in the spirit of fairness, any audio retouching should be against the rules, unless one person does it for everyone's...maybe in later rounds or something?
I think edits such as normalizing should be allowed because some people's mic's are so bad that often you'll hear an extreme screech when its not intended.
I predict ypang to do a starcraft rap again? :D He is the first person I thought of when i read this. I had a gut feeling he would try to get involved for sure.
Haha I would totally do this.. can anyone help me? I'm trying to find a good karaoke of Weezer - Pink Triangle, but since it wasn't a successful single (or really a popular song outside of their fans) I can't find anything. I'd rather not record over the original song but I might have to...

Just a note, my dad's switching internet services and I have no idea how long this is going to take (my neighbor's letting me use their wireless signal for now). There's still a week and a half before the deadline so I should be back up no problem, but just in case something happens between now and then, I just wanted to warn you guys of a possible (short) postponement.

Still undecided. Depends on how many submissions we get. If the submissions are low (I only have 5 so far emailed to me) then I'll allow it, however if we get a huge influx of people, then I'll keep it to one submission per person.
If you want to submit more than one, then I'd suggest you go ahead and do it, but in the email tell me which one will be your primary submission. So if I have to drop the limit to one per person, I'll still know right away which ones to keep.
Wow, can't believe I missed this. Doubt I'll have anything acceptable ready by the deadline, but if you host another ones of these, I'll definitely try to have an entry.

We'll see. I'm busy until next week unless I randomly record something at my friends house while I'm back at home for Thanksgiving. You may very well see an entry from me, phase...
Yep, somehow the rest of this week filled up, so I won't be able to grace all of you with my voice (hehe). I'm still really excited about seeing this thing through to the end!
On October 17 2009 17:08 LosingID8 wrote: the deadline already passed at 16:00...
I hope you're wrong, because I've gone through so much trouble to get this done lol.
I ended up just trying to get a tape of me doing karaoke. Things that went wrong:
-Had to come straight from long day at work with a tired voice from combo of having swine flu the previous week and having endless rehearsals for a choir performance this week, singing at a place where I couldn't even hear myself.
-KJ was too drunk to function plus thought my dad was trying to hit on the woman he liked so "lost my song" in the lineup, making me wait so long my friends were already wanting to leave
-once he finally did play my song, my roommate with the video camera wasn't ready, so cut off first few lines
-within first few seconds, people around start walking in front of camera and singing along
-camera can't really stay focused because of awesome corny lights and dying battery
-drunk old guy starts hitting on my roommate while she is filming, culminating in her saying audibly "can you leave me alone please"
-right after this, two older drunk women come up and dance so close they are like, touching me.
-then they try to set me up with their friend, even though I'm trying to point their attention to the huge, muscular guy behind then that would like to see any other guy try.
Anyway, I was trying to get another take, but the kj was having none of it and all my friends were too tired to go again that night or the next to film me. After watching it a few more times, I decided the vid was hilarious anyway, and you guys might get a kick out of it, even if it isn't my best display of talent.
Now, I'm trying to get the vid to capture, and it's not working. I will keep trying though, I won't have this all be for nothing, no matter how early I have to get up tomorrow!
EDIT: OK, well, in keeping with the trend and unfortunately for me, please accept my apology for the crappy quality. On top of everything, even after 5 time-consuming attempts, my computer refused to capture the video without being jumpy and adding skips. Hopefully people can still get enough of an idea of my voice to vote me to the next round! I promise if I get another chance, I'll do a better showing of my voice in a better quality vid, I'm' just already pushing the deadline at this point. lol, great idea for a really fun contest Falcynn!
well it's pretty evident by the first 20 seconds that you're a decent singer. pretty sure you haven't got a problem competing "seriously" on this playing field

I think during the voting, we should vote for the worst one instead of the one we thought best. Also i think we shouldn't put names on the songs because people sometimes vote without listening. So i suggest we just label each entry with A, B C, ...etc. And the loser will know if or not they got eliminated, and they can share if they want to.
Just letting you guys know that I did NOT forget about this. I'm still going to post up the voting thread soon, it's just that my internet at home is still down, and it's kind of hard for me to download these files at school. I will be trying to get the thread up ASAP though, and I guess as a bonus for me being late, anyone who still hasn't turned in a song can use the time I'm stalling with to turn theirs in.
Also to YPang, you can vote whoever you like I'll make it a point that you should vote for whoever you want to win, not who you think is the best, and don't worry I will omit names from the thread.
Well, I know technically we have an hour and a half left before the deadline, but I haven't received any votes in the last two days so I hope ending this round early will be alright. I updated the OP with the contestants who will be advancing into round 2, and reposted the schedule we'll be working with.
I decided to just post the names since by now everyone should know which song is who's.
Good luck everyone, and thanks to all the contestants that didn't advance. I'll try to do another season of this a while after these rounds have finished and I hope to see you guys there!
I guess this for now Like I said, not sure how the mods feel about me having these two threads open, but for now I'll try to keep the postings here.
Anyways, as for the three days not being enough. I do agree that I was probably pushing it a bit trying to see if I could finish this near the beginning of December, although I guess more time never hurt anyone As I mentioned somewhere (not sure where I said this) though, you can take as long as you need, and I'll change the schedule later to reflect this, I just wanted to throw a random schedule out there to give more of a feel of a timeline.

Yeah, I got it just fine. Yours and mikey's.
Also, my throat infection spread out into a full blown flu or whatever. I pretty much blacked out all day yesterday, don't remember anything except for some crazy ass fever dreams. Was not fun Still feel like crap, but just regular crap, not black out all day crap.
lol mikeymoo sent me a pm because he said page 11 of this thread was contagious and he was staying away. How is everyone? What submissions are in so far Falcynn? My voice is still over half gone, but if everyone is waiting on me, I'll pull something together.

I only have submissions from mikeymoo and Last.Midnight, so you're fine for now.
I'm so pissed. I couldn't figure out why, illness-wise, I seemed to be getting better, bu I was losing more and more of my vocal range every day. I go to the point at a choir rehearsal where I was mouthing almost all the words because my range consisted of only a few notes.
Finally, my section leader started talking to me, asked what medicine I was on, and then started FREAKING out. Apparently, even though my doctor said it wouldn't hurt my voice, the STEROID inhaler that he had me on was basically paralyzing my vocal chords. One of he ladies in choir with me said she lost most of her voice for about 3 months thanks to meds like these. (No to mention it totally made me break out like a juicer)
Needless to say, I'm off them now. And I found an awesome Karaoke place that is going to "sponsor" me by letting me use one of their private rooms as a recording studio! ...as soon as I can sing again. I'm so sorry, I hope soon! *prays*
