Greetings.
Though I have lived 22 winters, I have never gotten a game console before (PC games ftw, I guess). Recently, however, I am considering getting something hand-held, like an NDS, to spend time while on a bus (most likely I will be riding a bus for ~3 hours, 4 days a week, starting September).
So my question is, is an NDS worth getting? If you own one, how do you think of it? Since I have never gotten any items like this before, I am not sure what my demands are, but some general comments will help greatly.
EDIT #2:
Thanks for everyone's valuable input so far and I've gained a lot of knowledge of this item. I understand now that I need to get a console plus a memory card of some sort which allows me to illegally download games for free to play on the console. I think I will definitely get the duo.
Some research from my part shows that there is a slightly newer console called NDSi. Should I get that one? Also, about R4 being "outdated", how exactly is it bad and what are my alternatives?
Hi everyone. I just bought NDSl with TT (like R4) today. Then I realized that I bought the wrong memory for TT (my reaction: TT___TT). After some rest I will go again and get it exchanged for the right one... I am sure BestBuy will forgive my stupidity... or I hope anyways. Idealy I can play it tonight! :D
Fixed~!!! playing yoshi's island right now ^_^
Again many thanks for everyone's input. I really apprepriate it.
|
Yup. Make sure you get a R4DS card so then you can download the games for free.
|
^ R4 is essential. And I recommend you buy it from here. It's where I bought mine and I did not have any problems. Fast delivery and cheap price.
Also, the DS hold something like 70% of hand held console sales. Lots of people like playing it, but everyone is different. If you don't want to think you'll be wasting a few hundred, borrow a friends DS, like me I had it for a week and wanted one. Some people might find that they don't like it.
Lastly, there are tons and tons of games to be played. No matter what genre you enjoy, the DS will have it.
|
Nintendo DS's are great. I would recommend looking into Picross (puzzle game), Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (sort of like a choose your adventure novel), and The World Ends With You (RPG). These are my personal favorites, but there are plenty of other games to satisfy your needs.
|
Yes R4/Cyclos is required though.
|
I got a DS for christmas a couple years back, and it's pretty cool. I've spent countless hours playing PuzzleQuest and the FF remakes, but overall, it seems hard to find good games since it's mostly targetted at a younger audience.
|
Imo, Nintendo DS is THE console with the best games since the SNES.
Of course, there's a ton of crappy games, but if you know where to look, there's a very good amount of gems. Amongst my favorites:
-Contra 4 -Phoenix Wright serie - Megaman XY - New Super Mario Bros - New Tetris - The World Ends WIth You - Advance Wars - GTA Chinatown Wars - Korg DS-10 - Zelda Phantom Hourglass - Mario Kart DS - Castlevania, Dawn of Sorrow - Chrono Trigger DS - Ninjatown - Elite Beat Agents
Those games are also fairly cheap too, ranging from 25 to 40$.
|
It makes a great ebook reader if you get DSReader.
|
CycloDS is sweet... I had an r4 but it breaks after a little while and its getting kind of outdated. The CycloDS is better because it has the option to upgrade the microsd card to larger memory.
|
yeah but don't get an R4..those are outdated and the original R4 company doesn't create anymore updates. All the other R4's that are coming out are pirated ones of the original R4. I suggest getting an AceKard since those are updated frequently and cheaper too .
|
^ what he said. R4 is outdated and horrible. research some other flashcards and pick your pick. just not R4

On my computer I currently have Prototype, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Crysis, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, The Witcher, GTA SA/VC/IV, etc. Guess what gets the most play time- my computer or my DS.
The R4 is totally out of date. CycloDS is ok, but more expensive. http://www.electrobee.com/real-perfect-bundle-rumble-p-29.html
That's probably the best package you can find now. M3 Real has good support and is as modern as anything else (with RT save, brightness adjustment, cheat codes, etc.) The UI isn't great, but I've never seen a card with a good UI. I definitely recommend the GBA pack though. There are still a lot of great GBA games to play.
|
Put a poll up next time. I would say no unless you don't like books. Then yeah of course.
|
O wow I didn't know you can read books off it (is the screen too small for that????). That's simply amazing and I would find it extremely useful.
|
Yeah R4 is antiquated.
Acekard from dealextreme is the best deal.
|
I heard from a friend that I should get a "cracked" NDS that would allow me to download (illegally, alas, but pirating rocks so meh!). Does that have to do with R4?
Should have read more carefully I guess. So does that mean I should buy a console + R4? O_o
|
There are no "cracked" NDS. There are "cracked" PSP though.
|
damn thats a long bus ride.
but get the acekard, frmo dealextreme if you can wait for 7days+ because it ships from Hong Kong. DS Lite are lesser than $120. which is so good. with near ~100 good games to try out.

Some of my books are electronic so having some sort of reader is also in my consideration. I once saw a girl on the bus using one made by Sony with a display screen of roughly 4-5 inch diagonally and I was very intrigued. Regrettably I did not ask her about it.
|
DS Screen is considerably smaller, and there are 2 of them. I think its about 3-3.5 inches without looking it up.

Yea, well... if I do get NDS I probably wont read on the bus. I don't think it helps me too much anyways, since I am in mathematics and when I read my books I require absolute concentration and the bus/subway is very noisy for me to concentrate (plus my constant fear of missing my stop makes things worse).
|
I got one as a present with R4. you can get a program to turn it into an MP3 player as well if you like. I used it while i commuted to and from univ. (approx. 1.5hours one way, so 3 hours round trip) eventually I got bored of it quick despite having the ability to play songs, practice french, and play various games i downloaded. I ended up playing tetris the most, maybe it's just my taste in games. I ended up just sleeping on the bus instead, something you might consider if you are gonna be tired waking up early or going back home from a long day at school.
|
true... try games like brain age if you decide to get it. there are a bunch of fun puzzle math games like that for ds
|
also... does anyone have any good sites for nds games? if we are not allowed to disclose them on the site, can someone pm me?
|
Probably on torrents. O_o
|
I am actually thinking about playing Yoshi's Island and.... Pokemon.... XD
|
well i have one that I use but after you dl one the timer goes wayyy up on this free share site... I dont want to post it if we arent allowed because I always get banned for stupid shit like that
|
no it really isnt~.... i kind of regret on getting ds instead of psp... i get bored of ds games so quickly~ although i do have to say ds given me a decent experience of some challenging games like knight of nightmares, disagea, tetris(lol shit gets so addicting to the point where i see tetris figures falling~)... ds is kind of late to get now~ i suggest just saving that money for something new to come~ at worst buy a used or replenished one to save money~...

yep I would definitely get a DS. I think its worth the money (although I can't say since I won mine for free in a photo contest :D)
If you do get a DS you should definitely play Mario kart ds pokemon platinum Elite Beat Agents, Ouendan,Ouendan 2 (if you enjoy music games) super mario ds (its like the mario on the N64 but not just a direct port, they added alot of stuff) the world ends with you (alot of ppl like it..i don't really like it so far)

Doesn't work...?

latest update says the servers are down and the data center gave them the boot... gg lol
|
Disgaea is a ton of fun on DS. Love my DS. Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy IV, V among other games is a major plus as well. Pokemon Platinum is amazing if you havent played one since red/blue.
I don't regret the purchase one bit even though I own a ps3 and not a wii.
I still play ps2/snes games though, so I may be a bad judge of what will stay enjoyable enough to be worth the money for you.
If you do get one, Disgaea is the game to get if you like RPGs or tactics games at all. Reminds me of Conker's Bad Fur Day in its ability to make people burst out laughing.

Get it for the:
Pokemon series Phoenix Wright series Final Fantasy III and IV Final Fantasy Tactics A2 Grimoire of the Rift Final Fantasy Xii Revenant Wings The World Ends With You
so many good games for NDS... and Pokemon Gold/Silver are being remade for it as well.

I love the DS. I've had one for almost two and a half years and I always play it. One time my DS got stolen and I felt so empty without playing it, so I just had to buy a new one. It's a great console with a huge variety of games. Many people argue about how sucky its graphics are, but it seriously isn't that big a deal. You don't play games for graphics afterall. Look at Starcraft. Get one.

Demonoid has torrents for every DS game ever made. There's even a massive 90+ gig torrent. Thepiratebay seems to have a big handheld section as well.
|
if you do get one make sure you sheck out chrono trigger!
also dont get an r4 because they stopped updating the firmware, not sure why but i hear the owners are jailed :o

the DS disappoints me
the new voices in diddy kong racing DS pisses me off. and no silver coin challenge? they replaced it with a dumb popping balloon game? fuck that. can't they just not force touch screen features into the game and make it closer to the original instead?
and then there's yoshi's island DS which is okay but it is a lot more frustrating than the SNES version. for example, in the SNES version if you're at the very end of the level and you have like 29 stars, you can just use the +10 stars item that you won from the minigames. but in the DS version if you want 30 stars and you're at the end with 29 stars, you'd have to start all over. plus the music really sucks which depresses me. instead of these:+ Show Spoiler +you get+ Show Spoiler +
But neither of those are RPGs so if you do like RPGs, get it.

NDS + R4 = near infinite games (just delete ones to make more space). costs about $200 USD total, right?

I found a friend who has one. She said it costed her $200 (Canadian Dollar) for DNS + R4, and she bought it last summer. So I suspect it will cost less than $200 US for you.

Before I got Virtual On for XBLA, I played my DS more than both the 360, xbox1 and Wii combined. The numbers of quality DS games is just sooooooo many! The touchscreen isn't gimmicky like the wiimote.
Nintendo DS is an easy buy. It's the only current generation system with any decent strategy game.

The DS is actually a lot better for reading than the average book. Why? Narrower columns let you read much faster - means reading on a DS is faster and easier than on a Kindle. If this is true, why aren't books super narrow? Well books have a spine, so narrow books are annoying as hell. Also, some people don't realize that short columns mean you only have to look at the left end and right end of the column to read the whole thing (a lot of people don't realize how they read, they move their eyes along a path when you only have to look in a few spots unless the book is wider than it should be. Also, pictures are better on wider books / can't fit in short columns / our eyes are widescreen, etc. The DS is honestly about perfect for reading a book that you can get into a .txt format.
