Edit: so we're not really going to spend much time organizing games. Just hop on the hamachi server TLciv4 and see if there's a game going on.

It's pretty casual and we'll most likely have an AI you can take over for if you come in while we're in the middle of a game.

{CC}StealthBlue's blog about civ iv ( http://www.teamliquid.net/blogs/viewblog.php?topic_id=84939 ) gave me a sudden urge to start playing this game again, although after seeing there are a few people here who enjoy this game as well, I was wondering if anyone would be willing to start a multiplayer game of this?

I've never played this or any Civ game on multiplayer so I have no idea how long it'd take or what exactly is involved in it. So if there's enough people interested, maybe we can find a way to organize a game. Hopefully someone will come along who's actually played this on multiplayer and knows how it works.

Oh, and even if you're not very good at this game, feel free to join. I actually suck pretty bad, so you won't be the only one getting their ass kicked

and if you don't have Beyond the Sword, maybe we can organize on vanilla Civ IV.

Just noticed the posts in the Dota thread. haha, so if we get everyone who wanted to play there, zulu, fusion(if we choose to play vanilla), oneofthem (not sure if he agreed to play, but he obviously has the game), and myself, we should have enough for a decent sized game.

(bumping to keep this in the top 5 on the sidebar since I don't know how many people actually come to this forum).

I'll play, either BTS or vanilla. One thing we should decide is if we want a "quick" game with all the fastest settings than can be played in one 3-6 hour sitting, or a longer game that would require multiple sessions. The multiplayer games that I've played are mostly just pangaea, blazing, small world games, which are fun, but don't really require a lot of long-term strategy and it often comes down to luck.
Can't believe I'm still here playing this same game

I played a pretty entertaining BTS mod with my roommates this fall; it's called Fall from Heaven. The link is here: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=171398. It plays kind of like an RPG, since your builds and teching must go down focused paths in order to be effective. Geography and scouting is still hugely relevant, as is resource, territory, and overall domestic management. There are some elements that aren't very balanced, and the top tier races are significantly stronger than the others... but the non-top tier races were all relatively balanced.

Its main draw is that the variety of builds and options that operate differently but perform similarly make it more entertaining than BTS, which gets dry quickly. For instance, investing in religious techs is a viable strategy, and each religion performs differently both on the battlefield and at home. The demoniac religion allows you to halve the amount of food your citizens need to survive, while the nature oriented religion leads to a massive happiness bonus for forests near cities. Each religion's military units also are geared towards different tactics. The cthulhu worshiping religion's first grunt is amphibious: it travels land and coast. Conventional and magical trees have their own perks.

Ultimately it still falls prey to the systemic failings of BTS, and to some extent other 4x games: start location luck affects your performance in-game far too much... and in the time it takes to resolve a single match, I could've played 20 games on iCCup and analyzed them all.

Since then I got my roommates into Starcraft (thank God they weren't as close-minded as some gamers these days) ... but anyways my point is that if you wanna burn a couple dozen hours playing Civ you might as well try this mod out. I prefer history over high fantasy myself, but it was still loads of fun.

A long, long amount of time. It'd take like 3 hours with three players and a few comps, and usually we just quit whenever it became obvious one of us had won. It would drag out to 6-8 hours if we really wanted to play to the "end."

Also, I'm down. But not tonight.

Given how long a Civ4 game usually takes, I've found the best way to do multiplayer oftentimes is PBEM.

i used to play civ4 with the computer, but then i read some articles on civfanatics about specializing cities and it was all too complicated for me since i could never find the appropriate land, but if you want, i could play with you guys

It looks like we have enough to play a game on a huge map. Is that ok? Or would you guys prefer to split the group in half (or even smaller) and play 2 (or more) smaller games?
