Yeah there’s still a ‘starting MMR’ though. When I hit rank 7 again I hope to be above 2500 this time.

lol
I kinda doubted anything would be carried over.. currently at 1865..

Did they massively increase Giratina reward chance? Between me and missus, have gotten 6 straight Giratinas whenever we get to the pokemon reward.

Great League is a lot tougher than I remembered

I was initially pumped we get 5sets for free every single day! But wow I'm gonna be spending an inordinate amt of time just going thru 25 battles every day (plus today I battled for at least add'l 10 games for the missus).. its getting crazy but those rare candies and giratinas are very tempting

Yeah I went hard too, got 3 Giratinas and then I quit, my finger hurt.

At the end of last season I was 2850 MMR, when the reset happened it showed me as Rank 7 at 1633 MMR.
They did a quick fix, then it showed me as Rank 1 at 1633 MMR. Then they did another fix and hid the MMR, I was just Rank 1.
Just got to Rank 7 again and my MMR is now 2050, so should be Rank 8 after the next set (thresholds changed to 2000/2500/3000).
Pretty bummed, I was close to Rank 9 last season, I went 41-24 in the current season, and yet I am now wayyyy further from Rank 9
There's no way I'm climbing 450 points even with unlimited sets. Oh well.

In an update to the above post, wins/losses give +/- 9 points now instead of 5, so the setback isn't as bad as I initially thought.

Looking for input on my great league team. I've got the following mons that each have 2 attacks and are powered up as close to 1500 as possible:

Skarmory, Altaria, Meganium (no frenzy plant), Azumarill, Clefable, Medicham, Hitmontop, Lapras

I ran with Meganium/Skarmory/Altaria for a long time, but I found that lots of ppl were using Bastiodon or Registeel and that kinda wrecks me.
So I initially replaced Altaria with Medicham, then of course the steel types stopped coming.
Briefly ran Azumarill/Medicham/Altaria but that wasn't great either.
Thinking of trying Azumarill/Skarmory/Altaria for a while. I still have nothing vs Registeel but I don't think I can form a team that gives 'perfect' coverage.
I think Azumarill will do better than Meganium because not having Frenzy Plant means my Meganium never gets a special attack off...

I am much less into it. TBH its kinda boring. I just use Altaria and Registeel (no 2nd move for him) and then kinda use whatever 3rd I'm feeling between Mega and Lapras. I'm sure many things are more optimal, but its too much work to try and be good at this thing.

On the contrary, I find it amusing that such a supposedly simple/casual mobile game that was initially mostly about mindlessly tapping ur phone screen at pve was able to create a complex and mostly balanced pvp.
I guess its all perspective and reference

edit: I finally have a powered Azumarill for GL.. lets see how she does! And its scary to think how strong Medicham was before PuP was nerfed. Ive been using Venusaur a lot at GL. As with UL, this ugly dino keeps impressing!

I would go Azumarill/Medicham to start just because Azumarill>Skarmory/Altaria as a generalist and Medicham>Hitmontop to counter the steel types.
After that, you do have a hole for that 3rd spot. From that list I would just go either Skarmory or Meganium. Grass is nice but I've never used Meganium and I've never considered it a huge threat. Leaning towards Skarmory then for a solid 2nd generalist to backup Azumarill. Altaria does not mix well with Medicham due to fairy weakness.

I tried your suggestion and it worked well. My only weakness now is Alolan Raichu. I don't think it's possible to get a line-up that has 0 weaknesses so I'll work with this for now. Should be Ultra League soon anyway, I think?

lol yeah you can go crazy trying to find the flawless team.. especially in GL since there are so many viable pokemon..
well you still have medicham for raichu.. it should be fairly strong against it since raichu is frail and depends on shields while medicham deals most of its damage thru counter (awesome with buff from PuP).. ofc the problem is getting that matchup; and if they have a registeel type wall in the back you need your medicham to survive with at least some vitality left.. you can try switching clefable for skarmory.. might be a team with less weaknesses.. but skarmory has good synergy with azumarill since you can severely punish and completely farm grass types that are meant to counter the latter.. but yeah both are weak to electric (raichu and lanturn)

dunno when UL starts tbh..

I'm currently trying this line-up: Probopass(lead)/Whiscash/Toxicroak
Idea is whiscash and toxicroak are both anti-steel counters (sans Skarmory) who can also hold their own against Azumarill (i'm looking at you Medicham!). I've just found it very hard to win a matchup where they lead a steel type and I have to switch in my single counter who spends a majority of its time fighting other pokemon.

This seems to be the opposite of my perspective. When I started back in last season I picked comps I thought would be good based on what I thought would be. Mostly these choices were based on balanced teams around 1500. I had a very low winrate. About 40%.

This season I looked up 4 "OP" mons and got them as close as possible to 1500, and stuck with them from 1-7. I had a 70% winrate. With almost minimal investment. One was a Registeel that needed 1-2 powerups only. Now that I am at rank 7 where winrate and rank is what matters, I only encounter a few types of battles:

1. Noob/Intentional loser. I am facing a person with no chance. Most recently it was a Raiku, Raticate, Steelix team.
2. Team I hard counter.
3. Team that hard counters me.
4. Team that my lead beats (I win)
5. Team my lead loses to (I lose)
6. Team that is basically a mirror but has all Pokemon that are basically 1499.

That is it. Never have I encountered a matchup where I could replay things (given the massive game lag) where I thought, "well I made a bad choice in game." I suppose I could stop running teams that are weak to ice beam if I invested a lot of stardust, but that isn't "balance" that is just a move that is a bit OP. Power Up Punch was also nerfed recently for the same reason.

Its basically the worst of gameboy pokemon combined with a lack of hacks.

Even if you pick OP mons, they still need to work well together. Generally you'll want a lead and then 2 pokemon that do well vs the counters of your lead. With a team like that it actually does become quite interesting.

There aren't many matches where I think I couldn't have won no matter what, it usually does come down to mistakes with switching and shielding. Of course some mistakes are made because I didn't have full information on my opponent's remaining pokemon at the time of the decision, those cannot be helped

Yep, it's a game of incomplete information, so most likely you could have done something differently to snatch victory. I've seen youtube matches where two people happen to battle each other in succession, and when that happens, it is quite common for the loser to win the rematch because they now know what they are facing. It actually happened to me once and I battled thinking damn I got matched up again with this team that counters mine (and with the same unfavorable lead). But somehow I won.

And just by practice battling in pvpoke.com, I lose a lot against random teams, just because I assume the AI can count all the moves perfectly and things like that. Of course I don't know if its cheating when it comes to shield baiting and stuff like that.

The lag & no tiebreaker ruins a lot of it unfortunately though. Especially if you end up with anything like a mirror and one player gets their Pokemon to special first with the same fast/charge move.

I know they uh won't but I wish they would at least in lag have your pokemon continue to fast-attack so it wouldn't be such a handicap if you have a lag spike. I'd also like it if 2 mons could use their specials at the same time somehow.

there is a tiebreaker: mon with higher attack gets to go first (to offset the tendency to favor IVs with low attack).. but I do like to see how attacking simultaneously would work

the lag is pretty awful this season, it was almost nonexistent for me in pre-season.. but now it happens in almost every match

There are some matches where I certainly think my team would always have lost. I dont have a perfect team of course. I Haven't invested heavily enough. The team I run generally cant win if there are 2 ice users. That's just the result of Altaria + Mega being on the team. But there are teams I face I certainly think "oh this poor chap had no chance". My Altaria is massively outpressuring them and they switch in someone who Regi or Mega is gonna kill. When your in suboptimal land its like that all of the time. Also, I think the issue of having a 1489 Altaria opening against a 1499 one is unteneble in a competitive game.

But even optimal land kinda sucks. This is a game who's existence is mostly justified by nostalgia. How do you, as a developer, allow the best mons to be what they are. I suppose that there is the one dude with a 1499 mew and a 1499 Frenzy plant Venosaur who has pokemon he really likes that are strong picks. But who ever had Azumaril or Altaria in their teams that beat the Elite 4? TBH I would be much more interested in the meta if Snorlax, Kadabra or Alakazam was the best pokemon. Or really any other G1 mon that was super relevant to the actual games that got looked over by pokego. The only G1 mon ever treated fairly was Venusaur after CD and Machamp (who no G1 fan actually cares about because he always sucked in G1). Venu is still good (of course, normal humans dont have one from CD that they evolved for FP that are under level 1500, so, again, FU niantic), but why do you allow such a lame set of mons to be good.

Not only that, I know of no commitment that 1500 league will be the competitive league for a long period of time. I am to invest in trash mons that I hate only for them to be obsolete and then I have to invest in Giritania (another despicable detestable mon that ruins PVP being fun at its level)? No thanks.

If we are going to be having PVP with such large investments it needs to be balanced towards pokemon that are actually useful everywhere. Make Triple lvl 40 Machamp the best comp, or something like that.

With regards to the CP, it's perfectly possible that a 1489 CP Altaria crushes the 1499 CP one. Depends on their individual stats. Attack is measured more than Def/HP in the CP formula so you could have a 15/0/0 IV Altaria that has higher CP than a 0/15/15 one, and the latter would win.
So the best thing to do is to bring a team with low Attack IVs but high Def/HP into Great League/Ultra League. For Master League of course 15/15/15 is the dream.

I ran Meganium+Altaria for a long time myself (3rd being skarmory) and I didn't find Ice pokemon an issue. It seems like no one runs lapras so the only ice users I come across are water type (mainly Azumarill and Whiscash), which means Meganium shreds them. My problem was I had nothing vs Steel types though, so I'm running a different line-up now.

I agree with your next paragraph. I'd never pick Meganium in silver, and certainly not Azumarill/Skarmory/Medicham (which is my current line-up), I just don't see that as a problem I guess

Yes, the absurd desire to have a bad attack stat Mon is also a problem given that this feature wasn't announced at launch.
