Hey, this is fighting game commentator UltraDavid. Along with my co-host and co-commentator James Chen, I do a weekly fighting game stream called UltraChenTV. We analyze fighting game matches and gameplay, teach basic and advanced gameplay ideas, talk about games and characters and matchups, discuss fighting game news, reminisce over fighting game community history, and so on.
Usually we do this Monday and Tuesday nights at 8pm Pacific time. But tonight, we're gonna have a special show introducing the fighting games at MLG Anaheim, which are King of Fighters 13, Mortal Kombat 9, and Soul Calibur 5. We'll run down the gameplay and characters in each game so you can get a handle on the action and then introduce some of the important players to watch and quickly go over some of their backstories to make things more interesting. We'd like to give people who don't have much experience in high level fighting games a little more investment if they decide to try watching the fighting game side of MLG this weekend.
Our stream will fire up at 9pm Pacific time tonight on http://twitch.tv/ultrachentv. If you can't make it,, the archives should be available on Twitch right after we're done and the replays will be up on YouTube tomorrow at http://youtube.com/ultrachentv. Hope you'll tune in!

Awesome. Definitely going to tune in. Thanks! :D
glad to see you guys reaching out to other communities and helping out
You guys do some great content so I expect nothing less out of this show.
I expect to see great things coming from you at Anaheim this weekend Ultradavid.
I love you guys.lol keep up the good work.
Holy shit UltraDavid posting on TL??? Love the show.
Oh, wow! I had no idea you were on TL.
Looking forward to the show, as usual! I really wish Capcom would open up to MLG.
Edit: Also, shoutout to EhSports!
EMPKerrigansbutthole fighting.
definitely recommending this to people, you guys do great stuff and love your commentary
I'll make sure to tune in. I enjoy watching FGs but I don't have the time to dedicate to learning as much as I would like about the matchups. If you really want to get this publicized to the SC community I would try to get Day9, Tasteless, Incontrol, or whomever to retweet something. I bet any of the MLG guys would be glad to retweet as well, @itmejp @mrmlgadm @mlgsundance are the people many SC fans would be following (also Halo fans).
UltraDavid and Gems Chen are the Tastosis of the FGC, looking forward to this.
Hoping for another pun-tastic show!
This is a good idea! I'll be sure to try to tune in.
I love you guys, thanks for making this post on TL and reaching out to other communities.
I'll definitely be watching this! Thanks for taking the time to reach out to other communities!
This is gonna be gdlk. Gotta love anything UltraDavid and JChenzors are behind.
Can't watch it live, but will definitely catch the VOD. Hope lots of the ESPORTS community will check out theFG stream at Anaheim.
Wow, pleasantly surprised to see ultradavid post on TL - huge fan here.
thanks a lot for doing this and please don't be a stranger in the future. i promise that TL has a lot of fighting game fans.

EMPKerrigansbutthole: The true Heart of the Swarm.
I'll likely be watching starcraft most of the weekend but I'll definitely be catching this primer.
oh yeah nice that it got spotlighted so quick

i love to watch the fighting game stream during the first day of MLGs. for SC2, the pool play and open bracket just doesnt get me excited enough, and no im not going to watch LoL....
i hope that the KoF XIII tournament will be a great show, but the low turnout really really disappoints me.
Oh awesome! Teamliquid has it on the right bar now! Love watching UltraChen!

I know a large number of people like to show up on the day for fighting games, but yeah, low turn out is always a bummer.
But also ACL Regionals are this weekend as well (an australian tournament qualifier) so i'll be watching that in the down time.
Thanks for doing this UltraChen!
This is pretty awesome. I know umvc isn't part of mlg, but could you play some of that?
I really tried getting into watching comp fighting matches, but I couldn't really get into it, hopefully this will change with this! ^.^
holy crap jchensor! please post some of your amazingly edited fighting game footage (EVO Trailers, 2-Hit Combo Video, etc) for the RTS community to experience what life is like on the other side of eSports!
It unlinked when they restarted the stream.
love ultrachen XD good stuff guys
This has been really good ^_^
Thanks for doing this guys, creating some hype among the non-FGC fans for this MLG. Much appreciated! I will try to atleast get me a dose of KOF this weekend.
YAY CHEN KORKOR + David hwaiting!!!
I have a question to the FGC in general. Something that I personally do not like is having to switch games very often. I played War 3 until SC2 Came out, and CS:1.6 until CoD4 came out, and am still playing cod4 until CS:GO comes out. Does it ever feel wearisome to have a new game, often under a different title but the same genre keep replacing your focus every time you blink?
I do hope you guys get more calendar time, love your show. I say it's accurate when you describe it as the Day[9] daily's for fighting games. Keep being awesome!
Sick stuff. Love you guys
Love what you do, for those SC2 fans not knowing, thats the Day[9] of the Fighting Game World
I really enjoyed the show, guys. Since MLG added Soul Calibur, I've found myself following the scene more and more. I'll be cheering for the US against France!
Great idea, sc2 and fighting games have more in common than most people think.
On June 07 2012 16:09 Dectilon wrote: Great idea, sc2 and fighting games have more in common than most people think.
I didn't realize what Day[9]'s old ID of "striderdoom" referred to until I started following fighting games more.
aw no blazblue? lol
Great stuff David! Met you outside Staples Center, looking forward to seeing you at MLG. Glad to see some outreach into the other audience and trying to explain what makes fighting games great to watch.
I think the biggest hurdle is having people understand how hard reliable execution is and how quick the mind games and reactions need to be. As in learning to respect another group of talented people playing another very 1v1 focused game.
Yo Ultradavid has a TL account? We in there. They are the Tastosis of the FGC. UltrachenTV is the best show for beginners who are new to the scene.
I like the initiative, but I would be sooo much happier with a game like SSFAE or something. Soul Calibur is cool though.
There is no AE or MVC at Anaheim? D:
no capcom games until they give MLG a license

I'ma defintely tune into this, I barely know anything about other fighting games outside of the Capcom games..

Goddamn it, Capcom. Goddamn you.
It's great that Fighting games rise in Popularity as well!
I'm not huge fanboy myself, but still I like to watch few fighting games just for pure 1 on 1 skill that goes on there :D
Huge thumbs up for this!
KING OF FIGHTERS 13?!?!
Wow, I have been out of this scene for a realllllllly long time....
Sponsored spotlight? Dat aint right!
EDIT: Seems to have happened before, just me being naive.
Sounds really cool, I'll be tuning in. I've been waiting for a show like this to come along
Love UltraDavid and Chennnnnzor!
so, is this over ? did i miss it ? can't tell when the OP doesn't use [ date ] or [ time ] tags
It'd be amazing if they could get some competitive Super Smash Bros there. But not likely =/
Man, never thought I would see UltraDavid on TL. I really wish both the communities I love and enjoy would hurry up and merge! I highly recommend this show for anyone who enjoys fighting games, FGC, or just want to learn more about fighting games as a whole.

The live show ended yesterday. However, the twitch.tv archives are available at http://twitch.tv/ultrachentv. I'm sure that they'll post the VODs to YouTube as well.
Didn't get a chance to catch much of it but what I saw was good as I expected. Been watching fighting games for a long while but never got involved in their communities. Welcome to TL.
HOLY SHIT ultra david has a TL account? hahaha <3
Too bad I'm too deep into the Japanese scene to enjoy the foreign one.
Actually kind of interested in watching this, never really delved into fighting games outside the stage of sitting around playing offline multiplayer with friends on the couch. I'll try and tune in, thanks for the heads up.
Nice, I'll be sure to tune in for one. Thanks for the initiative guys. Much appreciated.

There's still a Melee scene. I believe it's small but lively in Canada/USA.

I just watched the KoF, it was pretty helpful, thanks!
Isn't this a bit too esports for FGC? Anyway MLG needs to get capcom titles before I'll give half a shit about their fighting games :\
edit: Don't mean to come across as a douchebag as I personally love Ultradavid and I just currently got into the FGC he's one of if not the best caster and I'd recommend at least listening to him on his show even if SC:V and MK aren't as hype the capcom games (minus Xtekken).
UltraDavid is one of the best fighting game commentators. Especially for people around TL who haven't had a lot of exposure to fighting games. If you're even a little curious about these games check him out!
Great initiative guys. Too bad ECT4 is this coming weekend as well so probably not going to catch a lot of MLG fighting game action even though I'm always hype for some good KOF. There can be too much of a good thing it seems.
That was a very nice introduction to fighting games. They explained some quite difficult concepts reasonably well. I only wish that SSF4AE and UMVC3 were introduced, or in fact played at MLG, since they're much more popular. But there's nothing they can do about that.
awesome, good to have some fighting game love being covered, I'm just salty it's Soul Calibur, but that was MLG's decision.
45 more minutes until it starts?
On June 08 2012 12:17 Alabasern wrote: 45 more minutes until it starts?
no it was yesterday. check out the vods in their twitch archive ( http://www.twitch.tv/ultrachentv/videos )
however, be sure to check out The Runback on levelup's stream tonight if you want to see some KoF XIII and UMVC3 action. considering that MLG starts tomorrow, i think that a lot of great KoF players should be at the event to practice and warmup for the tournament.. it should start in about 30 minutes.

The Runback is good enough, thanks. Plus Thursday Night Throwdowns is on Twitch.tv atm, good ol' shoryuken.

Yooooo, shoutouts to UltraDavid. I didn't realize you had a TL account :> And since 2010 apparently!
Keep fighting the good fight for the FGC.

Seeing "Germany" as the country of a post that later reads "We in there" is funny to me. That was unexpected. UltraChen does own though, you are right.
I genuinely feel like I understand these games a lot better. Thanks so much for sharing this!
Awesome to see some of the fighting game community come over to TL to spread some love about the epic games that are apart of the MLG circuit! :D
thanks a lot, i just played streetfigther games with my friends when i was young, those new generation games looked really confusing to me, now i actually know what they are doing a lot of the time.
ANy chance you make one about marvel vs capcom? there are a lot of videos from matches and it looks interesting.
I used to follow the fighting games a bit after being mesmerized by Daigo n 2004. Hear he is still good but no longer the Godly Beast he once was.
UltraChen it's taken you guys too long to post here. Sending some man love your way.
Wish Capcom would let MLG have a license... haven't had much time to keep up with gaming in general, but UltraChen is always good.
Nice to see UltraDavid posting here on TL, hoping to see some DiveKick action sometime in MLG!
You can tell they don't have too much respect for MK9 lol. Cool idea though.

It's more like there are more murderous players like him than him no longer being godly.
Hey I remember watching your streaming a long time ago, I will have a look at your videos sometime

Who is Chris Hu?
Wonderful videos, I've always followed the fighting game scene (at least UMvC3 and SF4) and its nice to see ultrachen getting more people into the scene.
Also Chris Hu Karaoke on stream is amazing
This is perfect, I'm quitting diablo 3 this week after I cash out and I was looking to play a new game that wasn't a blizzard game I'd love to learn to play SCV at a high level =] time to do some research
Was SSF4 not part of the games at MLG?
On June 13 2012 08:09 tehemperorer wrote: Was SSF4 not part of the games at MLG?
No Capcom games at MLG. Something about an old deal made when MLG was much younger long ago that went very badly.
