As for Vettel and what he achieved. Look closer, he was up to 12th just from people retiring or having issues and the back three teams. Take away Ricciardo, Jev and Webber (because they all let him through). So to get 4th he passed two Williams, a Ferrari, a Sauber, a Force India and a Mercedes and most of those guys had incidents. The last SC just gave him fresh tyres which maybe he could have achieved more with. He did well (after his mistakes before and during the first SC) but it was not brilliant like Kimi and Alonso at Suzuka 05.

Look at Masa prime example. Was getting on the podeiums and being in contention in most races before the tyre issue and downforce rule, when the car was glued to the road. It took him about 3/4 of a season to get used to the back end kicking out on corners if your tyres are on their limit of needing change. The likes of Hamilton and Alonso (and maybe Vettel) are clear world class drivers, phenomonal imo. You can take numerous grand prix's they are involved with and point out world class driving from overtaking to being in the right place at the right time. They adapted to that within a race or two, not after 3/4 of a season. The cars are much more lively than they have been for years, and i will admit i have only been watching every race since 2005ish onwards, so i can't comment that far back on certain issues. But what i can say is, over the last 5 or so years, there has been a clear rise in the skill cap of the drivers.

Physically it is more demanding now. The cars are so good though that true talent shines bright only in technical slow corners, the kind of which Webber complains about. Long high speed stuff such as turn 8 in Turkey have virtually no scope to make up time. The FIA constantly try to slow down the teams but they progress faster than regulations slow them. This year is perhaps different due to the diffuser laws being successful but they will be faster than 2011 spec very soon. Relevant:

Curious to see who will take WDC this year, though honestly, I'm not really an Alonso or a Vettel fan. :\ Still respect their driving through -- it's pretty incredible to watch Alonso in the rain. Zomg its the cooking lady in F1 thread xD Who are you a fan off might i ask? I think Hamilton will be on pole this weekend, other than that, i have NO IDEA how the race is going to pan out. Will be an amazing race though

There seems to be a nice balance of raw speed sections and technical sections. I think driver/crew ability will play a better factor than car ability in this race due to the track supporting both raw speed and technical.
