Any advice for what type of character I should play? My connection isn't the best and plan to play solo SC...I want to play something strong that doesn't require a good connection

Does anyone know how Added Lightning Damage w/ Freeze pulse interacts with elemental equilibrium?

Depending on how good your system and how bad your connection is you might want to consider playing a summoner- it's not the most efficient way of playing (by far) but you chances of dying are slim and it should be able to carry you to merciless (where it admittedly falls off pretty bad). Not a bad choice for first character (and bad connection) I feel. Start with templar or witch and just work your way to the minion nodes. For additional damage you can chose damage spells (witch) or totems (templar). Can't provide skill tree right now (touchpad sux).

First of all, play HC, because even if you die, you just end up in SC, THE ONLY penalty you get is that your stash stays HC.
Next, I share your problem, so the 2 build I found that let you survive Lag are: 1. Tempest shield/Molten Shell Templer or Maraudor My favourite build atm. YOU NEVER HAVE TO DO ANYTHING, well almost, litterally. So this is how block works in that game: You block, you get 0 dmg. With Tempest shield: You block, you get 0dmg, enemy gets few 100 lightning dmg, you combine this later with elemtal prolifiation and start stacking crit chance(around lvl 65, when you have taken care of your surviveablility), this way you shock stack all mobs, making them take up to 220% dmg.
Molten Shell: When ever the amount of dmg you absorb by your armor (you get hit for 100, have 25% phys reduction, so 25 absorb is addded to the shell) combined with the amount of dmg you block (you block a hit for 100(read 0), so moldenshell adds another 100) reaches the moltenshell threshold 200 etc...it explodes. Now combine this with life leach. Your main dmg spell is now a spell that requires you to be recast ever 4-10seconds max, if you get a lot of dmg (and hence have absorbed a lot of dmg) you leach yourself back to full life, and even if your lag is for more than 10 seconds, Tempest shield still does dmg if your block is high enough.
With maraudor you get more life and are more safe in the beginning. With templer you get all the right runes you need in the beginning and with 40% manareg at start this build plays much more fluent and you do not have to go bloodmagic. I used a +1 coldgem shield and helped speeding my lvling process with freezingpulse, but my main dmg comes from moltenshell.
You wanna stack Life/Lifereg/Armor-ShieldBlock/ElementalDmg/Crit - In that order. Also I skipped all stun recover passives and went pretty straight towards unwavering stance(key passive in the south of the skilltree), since it lets you block even if you are frozen and makes all recover obsolete.
You do not need : Cast speed, Anysort of dmg but elemental dmg (not weapon elemental dmg, you do not attack, ever :D), Attack speed, accuracy etc...
There are 2 unique itemes that make that build more fun to play, an amulett lvl 5 that gives you 50% spell block, and an high es shield (lvl 69 unique i think) that give you another 49% spell block. If you do not like the shield you also can try to overcap the 75% cap on block, so with 80% block, you still block only 75% of attacks but 40% of spells if you have the amulett.
2. Summoner Which Pretty much straight forward. BUT DO NOT start as a summoner as they need good eq to be strong and get real save only after lvl 30+.
Last Edit: If you are okay with dying from time to time and wanna play SC afterall, Groundslam maraudor, hurr durr!

Summoner witch is actually really bad on a bad connection because your summons will desync you bad once you get like 8+ zombies, 12+ skeletons and spectres with some form of LMp or so.

But desync isn`t as bad, since your mobs keep fighting. However /oos command in chat lets you resync with the server, you can spam that all 10 second.
DOES summon skeletons work with LMPGMP????WHAT the fuck, that would be so usefull, but I doubt it, since it aint a projectile :d. Whats your main attack? I went for concentrated area of a effect firestorm, since my minions take care of most mobs by themselves.

He just means spectres with L/GMP. And just having lots of normal zombies/skellies.

Every attack you make with EE applies a debuff which increases/decreases the elemental resistance based on the types of damage you caused. If you attack them with Freezing Pulse with a supported Added Lightning Damage they would get -50 Fire Resistance and +25 Lightning and Cold resistance.
The idea of EE is to alternate elemental damages. If you're only using one skill then EE is useless except in some niche cases like dual wielding which alternates weapons for you (although this instance is mostly useless as well).

It's not bad up until merciless but if you have problems with connection after that up through Maps then you're going to be dead in many areas summons or no summons. If you play it super safe I'm sure it's fine but you never know.

is there a way to disable the new function where you have to apply/confirm all the skillpoints changes?

Hold control when you put the points in.

thanks, ended up dying to it when I was racing lol

Great, thanks. I did tweak it a bit, and got through act 1 last night. At least early on, the build is so dumb, especially when you get your first aura and Weapon Elemental Damage. My only problem right now is my resists are garbage. Time to start using some currency on resist rings before certain parts of act 2.
Also, what should the Bandit plan be? Help Oak in normal, kill them all in the other difficulties? Or triple kill? I assume help Oak, because health will probably be an issue for this build, and since it's dual wield, Koam's will never be a possibility.
|
Oak health is typically valued higher than a skillpoint. With the change to cruel attack speed; I'd value 6% attack speed over a skill point as well although if you actually want damage with that skillpoint is up for debate. If your build uses charges then it's worth picking up a charge from merciless. If you aren't using charges I don't know what you're doing.

downloading the game right, hopefully it's as good as you guys make it out to be ! quite excited tbh

Is quality on auras (+% area) worth much of anything at all?

It is a huge amount of fun. The first few games will be confusing as heck, then you'll start to see what everything is about. About 100 games in is where a lot of people really start to feel comfortable. Then without realizing you will have thousands of hours played and be in love
I suggest using as many newbie resources as possible. Knowledge is power and it really helps you get a strong fundamental base as soon as you start playing.
