I just started act 2 and with a little twink gear from my brother I'm pretty much face-rolling the early stages of the game (I know it will get harder).
My question is if anyone knows how effective the shield mastery/shield block passives really are in this game. D3 style logic says the numbers they are posting are pretty dang good, but it is a different game so it may not be true. Has anyone actually used these or knows any solid information regarding whether these are effective points spent on mitigation? I imagine at least shield mastery gets good when you start using shields with resists, but again, I don't really know.
Any help would be appreciated.
Yes. The shield passives are good.
Shield passives in the duelist area are actually kinda bad. Duelists generally won't have the Int to equip a shield with resists, and they don't have the juicy 2x15% elemental resist with a shield. The 4% node next to Water Dancing is obviously good, but I wouldn't grab any other node in that area. Shield Block has increasing return, and you won't be stacking more of it, so 2% block is pretty bad, considering you have no spell block and no resist. Simply grab more life while you head for the marauder/templar area or the ranger/shadow side.
I'm not saying that shields are bad, however. I'm simply saying that shield passives in this area are not really what you're looking for when you already have decent armor/evasion but absolutely nothing vs spells, chaos or elemental.
Been doing some maps, thought it would be more fun. Maybe I need to do it in groups as the grind is finally getting repetitive to me since I have nothing to move forward after beating all acts.

Hey guys, got a quick question. How much should I expect to pay for a quality Freezing Pulse? How important is it for a cold caster? That faster projectile seems really nice, especially coupled with the support gem.

Edit: Forgot to tell that I was playing HC.
Freezing Pulse with quality important if its your main skill. The faster the projectile, the farther it goes and hits more!
Yeah, I know. And yeah, I thought it'd be important. So how much should I expect to spend for a quality one? I'm kinda low on currency, having started the game only recently.

What level are you? I wouldn't worry about finding a good quality one until 70+.

I dont know about the price, but i'm sure its really inflated because of kirpp's last build

Sorry if those questions seems noob-ish/repetitive.
You don't want it early because you're wasting a lot of money if you die. Especially if this is one of your first play throughs. Leveling gems is ezpz. Especially if you get a level 1 and you're level 70ish. Every mob kill it'll level.
Freezing Pulse has possibly the best quality bonus of all gems. It's also one of the strongest skill in the game, being the only effective area of effect skill that can shotgun, has high crit chance, low cost and fast cast speed. Basically, a quality Freezing Pulse would be worth more than your entire gear, and probably your entire stash.
It's a likely candidate for some sort of nerf, but since it's not really broken, I'd expect them to buff most skills instead.
First playthrough and haven't had any wearable gear drop since a3 normal...on a3 cruel now. Is there somewhere I can farm this stuff or would I have to buy it if I want anything better?

I've been playing default league so far but i wanna start playing hardcore, anyone wanna reroll with me? Probably going to make a groundslam marauder similar to rhox's build.

Having tried a ton of different builds (not summoners though) I have to say FP builds are ultra resilient and have insane damage while not being gear too gear dependent. Melees become a non issue, just focus on resists and have a granite ready for special snowflakes. And as a bonus you can use it from level 1.
1-40 is quick. this is a guide that pretty much shows you what's the lowest level you can be to get 100% XP in the zone - so don't go by it 100% as you may be undergeared for some portions.
I think the best guide is to fool around and play through normal once. Then you will know how Skills, Supports and Passives work. Also, if you lack gear in the beginning, use some orbs on whites/blues. (Just don't waste Chaos orbs, Gemcutter prisms and exalted orbs, in case you find some ^^) If you play in Party is up to you. It has the advantage, that you can see, how other ppl do stuff and probably progress much faster, but on the other hand, you will miss out, how certain things work. It is actually quite a good experience to "feel" (often in a painful way) how certain monsters act and what skills they have. In a party you may miss that, because you never see it happen, because they die too fast or target your companions.
