So I left a runestone next to it saying they didn't really have anything to steal. Then I left some food in front of it and left.

I don't know, I hid a boat behind some rocks, but there is a tendency among some people to steal and use things that aren't nailed down. :p

By the way, if anyone is having trouble with food, fish just south east of the town. To fish, you need a string, which is most easily acquired from foraging an early root (forget the name), a bone hook, a lure, and a pole. A pole is easy to come by, two branches. A bone hook can be gotten from bones, which I found from killing a rabbit. The lure is a touch harder, I had a pattern for a wooden fish one. If you don't have that, there is a birch cork pattern that is easy.

In about 15 minutes, I caught 10 fish, each of which restores 3% food and gave me 3 intelligence points total and about 500 LP.
