Aside from the ACR / FAMAS, the guns are all pretty jumpy. It means you can mow down people in the open with a good burst, but you still need to tap tap tap to kill ranged targets consistently, and it means that snipers need to behave.

I think that it was a good choice to move shotguns to primaries. In MW2 you had the choice to go from the most powerful long range weapon (sniper) to the most powerful close range weapon (shotgun). In MW2 you could easily run around with just a shotgun and get excellent scores, you just have to stay close quarters, and play smart. I think they are going for niche roles for the sniper and shotguns, shotguns are primaries, only good at close range. Then the snipers, which were nerfed so quick scoping is almost impossible now, are only good at long range. I just hope that AR's and SMG's are balanced well enough that they can't easily take those roles.

Played for a bit. Started running around in the maps in a private match to familiarize myself. Got about a third done when a friend sent me an invite and we played for a few hours. The maps feel really good so far. A couple of the smaller ones feel a bit cramped, but overall they seem pretty good (no, they're not all small ass square maps, some of them are a pretty decent size). On the maps I walked around in, I saw spots on pretty much every level that you could snipe from. People need to quit bitching.

Claymores are retarded good, and since they go in the equipment slot (up on the d pad for PS3, kinda like the side button in COD4) you still get to keep your frag/semtex too. There's no click anymore. They just rape things. And you can pick it up if you want when you leave an area.

The SMGs (that I used.... all two of them) aren't horrible. The MP5K is nowhere near the recoil of MW2. It's actually useable. It does take quite a few hits to put someone down with the silencer on. Reminded me of the good ol' MP5 from COD4, though not quite as strong. No matter, though. Anyone that really got into COD4 knew that the MP5 had a twin. That twin is back for Black Ops, and it's amazing. Get the AK-74u and don't look back.

ARs are still crazy strong. The Famas does have low recoil, but there is recoil. It's not an ACR/Scar/M4A1. Pretty damn close, though. M16 is still beastly at medium to long ranges.

Only used the first LMG so far. It tears stuff up pretty good, doesn't bounce around too much, but only has 30 bullets a clip and a longish reload time.

The Dragunov didn't work out for me. Friggin' hit marker central. Could be I just need to adjust but it was not getting the job done at all (I did turn off aim assist, suppose I could turn it back on but I think it was my shitty aim + it needs to be chest up and I seem to have a tendency to hit the stomach a lot). I could put up decent scores in MW2 when I pulled out my Barrett class (not quickscoping just sniping, swapping to secondary as needed, etc.) so the first sniper not being too good was disappointing. Haven't tried the WA2000 yet, and haven't unlocked either of the other two though I'm looking forward to trying them out.

Knifing hitboxes are still generous as shit, but hey... at least they have to run at least two thirds of the way across the room before they swing now.

Frags are quite strong. Blew myself up a few times in private matches and I had trouble surviving if the grenade icon was still onscreen unless I was at the very edge. The fact that they're frags and have a longer timer/need to be cooked helps balanced it a little, at least. Been too long for me to try to compare them to COD4 frags. Semtex definitely throws/lobs a bit different. Not sure if the fuse is a tad longer or not. Nobody is really using them yet, so hard to say but they don't seem nearly as crazy as they were in MW2.

You will never see so many UAV/spy planes in a match for the rest of your Black Ops career as you will right now. Things are in the air like, 50% of the match. Ran into a few lobbies where the other team was smart and almost all of them used Ghost. Kinda like it's good or something. I would personally recommend that everyone use Ghost for the next few weeks anyway. At least until people start getting killwhoreish again and only use ones that inflate their kdr.

The Blackbird (8 killstreak) is amazing. Shows the enemy team in realtime including which way they're facing.

Also, noticed that the enemy flag carrier wasn't showing up in CTF a lot. Not sure if it's changed that way to be more 'tactical' or whatever, or if the carrier doesn't show up if they're using Ghost (as a few times it was showing the "kill" icon). If it's the latter, could be interesting if sabotage is the same way.

Also, there's a little ticker at the bottom of the screen on the multiplayer menus/lobbies. Has random shit like "No Excuses: 300,000 contracts have been failed" and other numbers, like total assists, or all black ops players have fallen for a combined distance of 28k times the height of Mt Everest. 2.3million players have been executed while in Second Chance. All sorts of random stuff like that. Kind of a neat touch.

Tried Wager Match once so far (Gungame) and got stuck on the second weapon. Piece of shit dual wield pistols with small clips and a huge reticule. Was next to impossible to hit people from anything further than 5 feet away, let alone get a kill, especially when over half the people had assault rifles to blow my head off with. Finally got past it and started sailing through the rest of the guns but by then it was far too late to catch up.

I will say, though, that sometimes the game lacks a certain spark in some areas. It's most noticeable during the Final Killcam. No music, it's just dead silent which feels a bit weird after how MW2 did it. It does give a final killcam in most game modes, though, even if it's not TDM/Search (so often it's simply the last kill that occurred, as opposed to it happening only when it's a game winning kill).

The spawning system has been a little suspect at times, though a good portion of the games I played with my friend were objective game types so it's kinda to be expected when you have a base to spawn at. The killstreaks I've seen (aka, that people got out of care packages) didn't seem anywhere near as ridonkulous as MW2. Think I saw two chopper gunners (9 killstreak) which is now basically a machine gun turret on the side of the helicopter. No infrared, map looks normal (in the killcam). So far the game looks to be not even a third as frustrating as MW2. And really, that's all I was asking for.

I could not agree less.

In MW2, the ARs and LMGs were ENORMOUSLY powerful at most ranges. Equally, snipers were also very capable at a variety of ranges thanks to forgiving quick scope mechanics. It was perfectly reasonable for someone with an AR or a thermal LMG to swiss cheese a sniper all the way across derail.

Is that good? Who knows. It was certainly balanced, at any rate. If Mr. Sniper brought his SPAS to the party, force feed him half a clip of AA-12 then loot another one off of his body.

Now it's fucked. Have you tried to use the Olympia? It will ROUTINELY not kill people at near point blank despite them being more or less entirely in your crosshair. The Mac-11 does everything the shotgun does better than the shotgun, and lots of stuff the shotgun can't do at all!

You have not only prevented people from using the shotguns as a secondary, but you have nerfed the shit out of them. Every single one of these guns has less range than the AA-12, less speed than the SPAS, and less damage than a single 1887.

They verge on unusuable. We're back to worthless CoD 4 shotguns. Worse, actually, from what I've seen so far. In my opinion, if someone goes 10-10 with a shotgun (instead of just using the handgun - which has also been nerfed), this is analogous to doing 2:1 with a real weapon.

Actually it has been proven. I remember a while ago there was this thing where PC players were put against Console gamers. PC players played on their PC, console kids on their Consoles. This was not just a stupid 4v4 thing, it was literally hundreds or I think thousands of people. Then when PC players were wrecking console kids, they put the PC players on the consoles too (which most of them never played a console before) and they still wrecked console kids.

Now to look at it more objectively, there is far more customization for a PC (in terms of available buttons and complexity of shooting).

I'm regretting getting this for Xbox. I got it for Xbox to play Zombies with my friends IRL, but Christ, people online are so bad. On my team and on the other, ti's horrific. I'm just going to have to stick it out for like a year and wait for the 66% off Steam sale that's inevitably going to happen.

I'm not being smug. People on consoles are seriously just horrible. I haven't seen more than 4 people in 3 hours of gameplay go positive in TDM, which is all I played for those 3 hours of gameplay. If it's justified for you to be passive aggressive and condescending towards anyone not part of your master console race, I see no reason why I can't act a little smug.

It's not like anyone's trying to say they're better than you: the PC gaming interface device is infinitely more flexible and precise than a control.

Microsoft originally planned much more PC vs Console gameplay via live, but found it was a bad experience for console gamers-- the best console gamers could just compete with mediocre PC gamers.

Exactly, that's what I'm trying to say. I'm not saying that PC gamers are better than Console gamers per se, but it's completely separate playstyles, communities, and interfaces and it's just absolutely unfair for Console gamers. PC gamers, especially on CoD outside of the stupid 50 person frag fests tend to be very cautious, accurate, and precise (even tactical, but I hate saying that word). They have a lot more control over their character in the grand scheme of things in comparison to a controller, and the community is far more scrutinizing to bad players on PC therefore weeding out all the bad players.

On console, the general player just runs in blindly, has shit aim, has no concept of teamwork or strategy, and just fails miserably and joysticks are horrible for controlling an FPS game in my opinion. It's not that PC gamers are inherently better players, they just have had more provided to them and it makes it unfair.

That guy thinks quickscoping took skill, on consoles all quick scoping did was abuse the auto aim. Quickscoping on PC took a lot of skill. If they want to nerf the auto-aim abuse, then just nerf the console.

Did they even nerf quickscope for PC? My PC is dead so I have been without a gaming rig for about a month, so I haven't really been keeping up on this type of stuff.

edit: I guess if they did take out quickscoping on PC, it will only be a matter of time before someone fixes it in a promod version.

A clip of a dude quickscoping in MW2 on the PC. You can not do this in black ops, however do note that most of the shots are sped up. Also I want to point out a thing, as the above poster said, this messes with the auto aim of the sniper, on PC there was no auto aim so sometimes when trying to QS in MW2 you would experience the exact same thing that people are going mad about in black ops.

forgot to mention one thing, this game is based on the WaW engine compared to the MW2 engine, you have to somewhat lead the shots because the hitbox is very different from MW2, people have yet to fully adjust to this change as well which messes with their aim.

As for the "omg this game is flawed!!" comments, give it time, they had no beta on the PC so they had no chance to stress-test.

Please remember how games like New vegas, oblivion and to some degree even sc1 were on release.


I know what quickscoping is. I was a scope for a pretty good CoD4 team in CAL and CEVO. I was just asking if they nerfed QS in Black Ops, which I guess they did.

Seems strange they would do that when there is no auto-aim/magnetism on PC, but I am sure it will be modded for competitive play.

Just got off the PC version, and i'm loving it to be honest. I'm glad they got rid of quick scoping. It feels a lot more like COD2, and a tiny tiny bit of CS in a way that positioning is really important, and splitting off in pairs of two yields much higher results than simply trying to be the wild gun of the team getting the highest ratio.

regarding technical difficulties, i haven't had any. Games runs super smooth with all settings maxed out, and i'm getting 49 ping on the official treyarch servers. notably less noob toobers btw :D

kind of. the splash is a bit smaller, and it takes longer between shots. and the arc is larger so its harder to aim. Fair changes i say :D

i don't get the hate for shotguns. MW2 shotguns were OP as secondaries and made the scav/claymore camp-for-killstreaks class so OP / gamebreaking / STUPID. These shotguns suck, hence they are super-fun to use.

I had an AWESOME killcam where there was some camper laying in a doorway. I had the double-barreled first shotty that you get, so i back around the doorway and come sprinting out and do the dive thing and land DIRECTLY in front of him, i'm talking face to face and proceed to shove both barrels of my shotty up his nose and blast his face off as time expires for the GW killcam

it was an epic moment.

If anyone wants to try a Promod esque ruleset server, no killcams/nofinal killcam/no killstreaks S&D with lots of rounds, try mrzioto.com server I just set up

Just terribly inconsistant lag. Not sure if its map based or what, but its like a stalker in the night ready to pounce at any time. Otherwise the game runs pretty fluidly. My last hour of play was perfectly lag free so im not sure if they hotfixed something or not.

Im not sure why people are avoiding nube tubes atm, but there are perks to help dampen the effects of them, along with all other explosives which is rpetty useful.
