He has some issues with some of his spells (especially his passive) bugging. But other then that he is pretty balanced, just you can't be an idiot and do well with him which is fine.

I haven't played karthus much lately but is his mana invisible while he's in his passive form? Or is it something else, since apart from that I can't recall having problems

Even Shen, whom everyone likes to put on a pedestal of OP-when-introduced heroes, wasn't that great, and I maintain he's still not that great. The problem was that one month where they reworked Feint to be absolutely retarded, but everyone more-or-less saw that coming, Riot just decided not to listen to the warnings. To no one's surprise they undid that change within the next two patches. As far as I can recall the only heroes that have been batshit crazy upon release have been Ezreal, Nidalee, and to an extent Xin Zhao, the last of whom I still believe is not that great, but in skilled hands in a solo lane is understandably difficult to deal with. By the way I'd stay put about judging a hero based on Phreak's spotlights. Garen was supposed to be the next OP hero and he turned out to be quite a dud. Solid, but not great. Likewise for many other heroes like Kog'Maw. Meanwhile a supposed underwhelming hero (via spotlight) named Xin Zhao turned out to be a terror for many people. Edit: Actually even despite all of the Heimer grumblings, at higher elos I've still not seen a Heimer team win. He's just banned because he's obnoxious to play against.

Eeh I don't agree with many things here. Kogmaw, malzahar and such all looked like crap in the spotlights Xin Zhao looked really OP in the spotlight. You have to understand that Phreak played Vladimir like crap and still he seems OP, it's not like with Malzahar where he goes like 5-18 and only uses the scenes where he got kills and acts like it's amazing. You really can see how OP something like a moving, slowing, damaging, lifestealing 2.5s zhonya active can be. Shen I still maintain was by far the strongest tank when he was released, Ezreal just was in the bullshit god tier and people knew Xin Zhao was going to be OP even before the champion came out and even before the spotlight, it wasn't surprising at all to anyone really. EDIT: added that his zhonya also slows

People that chase 1 person then act all surprised when Shen ports in and kills them are the people that think he's a great tank, and ban him. Or people ban him because they don't like his early-game presence when it comes to saving people and/or map presence, but as soon as teams gather up 5v5 boom, one of the bottom-half tanks. Except for when feint was like a spammable version of Olaf's ult, he's never been a tank, he's been a nice off-tank, though. None of the spotlights look great or usable at all, Xin Zhao's one for many of us looked like Phreak beating on bad players, which in the end was all there was to it. For god's sake the reason why Xin's considered ridiculous now is because of his ult, something that hardly shone through the spotlight. But you're not even really arguing against my main point, which is that the majority of "new release" heroes all kinda suck hard for the most part. It's been a long time since Ezreal, and even longer still since Nidalee, and now finally when Xin Zhao pops out people are like zomg every new hero is OP. What? Really?

He's vaaaaaaaastly overrated as a tank, because feint sucks, and has sucked except for that one month it was godly. He takes forever to farm, and he has no innate tanking ability. GG. Yeah Phreak was terrible with his Xin Zhao and used the wrong builds and everything, you just look at what the skills do instead of trying to find something awesome he does. But but I'll still say Vladimir is going to be really overpowered, if he turns out to not be OP I'll happily admit I was wrong.
