Oh yeah the famous Guiness World Records has released their top 50 all time video games, chosed by no other than US the gamers. The list includes awesome titles such as "Star Wars: Battlefront", "Lego Batman" and of course "Halo" as #1. Where is starcraft you may ask? Look juust above Ratchet & Clank at pos #39.
Halo has topped the Guinness World Records’ list of the 50 greatest video game franchises of all time, followed closely by Activision's Call of Duty and Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda. The list was voted on by gamers, so if you have any problems with it (oh, and you will), take it up with yourselves.
"We decided to take a different approach with this list than we did in the previous edition," said in a statement. "Instead of asking developers, industry insiders and journalists to rank their favorite titles, we approached a different kind of expert: the players themselves! Yes I am biased and yes I believe that Starcraft, among other more mature games should be better rated, but this just goes to show the naivety of some people, who think that an online poll [that no one knows about] would be a better measure than people who somewhat know what they're talking about (in terms of the effect the games have had on the industry and their current following).
What the heck, Guinness. At least tell us who "gamers" refers to and how this poll was conducted. A list like "Top 50 Best Selling Games of All Time" which you can back up with concrete data would be reasonable - this list, on the other hand, is completely subjective.
Why is Pong even on this list? Sure it's one of the first video games ever made, but it's boring as hell...
Top 50 games of ALL TIME!? This is certainly high heresy here man. So many of the listed games are 2000ish which makes the list seem like pretty short-sighted considering the long long history of video games (good ol' stuff like Grim Fandango and Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri to name a few). I just think that kiddie gamers were their main sample which is why Halo is number 1 (unfortunately).

I don't understand why people care about this list. It is some random survey of Other People's opinions, and naturally they will differ from you. Unless people start to make decisions based off this list, then there is no reason as to why you should pay heed to it. this is games ranked by popularity, which is often very different from games ranked by quality. but one is quantitative, while the other is qualitative, so its obvious which will be chosen to rank.
That list sucks. I'm sorry but FF and SC should be so farther up on the list then they are. And Halo... Halo just sucks. It should be in the 30s if anything. SC2 should be on that list too even though only the beta has been out.

voted on isn't exactly a record doing it per sales or adjusted amount sold etc would be a record. It also said franchaise which why would zelda metroid mario ever be lower then the 3 game and a dlc that is the halo franchise.

Pretty much this. Lego Batman is probably there because of the absolutely massive recent Batman movies. I'm willing to bet SC wouldn't have even been mentioned were it not for the massive hype surrounding SC2.
The lack of Mega Man shows how far Capcom has run the franchise into the ground since the X series exploded on the SNES.

1. Everyone posts his top 50 2. Make top 50 out of these games (50 games that had the most appearances on the submitted lists) 3. Organize the list (no idea how this should be made, probably by calculating average spot certain game got and then resolving ties by the number of appearances)
Relatively easy to do but it's a lot of work nevertheless.

Can you think of a game that is better, gameplay-wise than SC? i can't, it has survived 12 years because its just so good. And even after all this time, its still developing, its the #1 game of all time without a doubt.
This list is absolutely terrible. Obviously Starcraft should be in the top 5, where's Warcraft 3 and the Soulcalibur series? both of those games imo beat Halo and CoD any and every day of the week.

If this is the case, then the list is absurdly US-centric for a list coming from an organization on "World" records. Halo and CoD are big in the United States, but I'm willing to bet that very few people in Asia (which should effectively dominate the polling population) give a damn about them. This is not even mentioning the fact that the ubiquity of awareness of Starcraft in Korea is not paralleled by any game in the west.
I find the lack of Baldurs Gate and/or Planescape disturbing.
People should actually read the OP tho... almost all of them (except a few) AREN'T REFERENCING SPECIFIC GAMES. THey are talking about franchises. So no it doesn't just mean Halo 1 or the original Metal Gear etc.
So I looked at "Top 50 Games All Time - Guiness World Records" and saw how terrible they were. Most of us agree although the list isn't utterly useless, there is indeed games that has no business in the list or obvious candidates that had somehow seemed to be left out.
The problem in that list seemed to have stemmed from mostly one factor: the pool of people who voted. Majority of them seem to be casual player and do not have enough knowledge about gaming history to know or give appreciation to some amazing old games, such as "X-com series". The fact that Guiness 'World' Records only polled US gamers was disappointing too: who knows there is a obscure foreign game out there that totally kicks ass? To my opinion Teamliquid seems to pass through above two hurdles mentioned: we are international community, and most of us understand gaming (or from the poll, I expect them to.)
Thus I had idea of making 50 Games All Time for ourselves, and made a post and got an enlightening reply:

(Rule 2)To prevent certain game series from cluttering most of the votes, the vote will not be made for individual game but entire series. So instead of voting for 'Starcraft' and 'Starcraft 2' separately you would vote 'Starcraft' which will include both.
(Rule 3)Please don't call out others for their choice of votes. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
(Rule 4)Other obvious no-no things, like voting multiple times. If you want to change your mind just edit your post.
When no one posts in thread for more than 2 days, I will make a post saying "---poll closed---" and use the votes made before my post to make a list- it would take lot of work, but I also have bunch of free time on some occasions. It would be interesting to have a TL poll, I'm not so sure that Starcraft would be #1 even though I and all of you really love the game. I have had loads of fun with games like FF7, D2 (!!!), WC3, Super Mario Bros 1 and 3 (nes!), Half-Life, Counter-Strike list goes on... it'd be really hard to choose. I'd probably go for D2 as #1 just because in every aspect it's an 100% awesome game bar the obvious cheating/duping etc

These are not games but game franchises. They surely dont mean Final Fantasy 1 with Final Fantasy do they? On the other hand there are Pong, Little Big Planet and Chrono Trigger. So actually this list is not only a mess because of the games in it but it just flat out doesnt make sense.

Can't really compare console shooters to PC or vice cersa. Halo CE for Xbox was/is the best fps for consoles.
Console shooters are a horrible idea anyway: imprecise/ slow aiming, little or no modding possibilities, no custom maps... And by no means was halo anything revolutionary in means of gameplay. It was a decent game for a console game, but it was basically the same as many older pc shooters like tribes 2.

There you have it. Online polls are just not a good way at all for a meaningfull poll. Too many possibilities to cheat. And who knew about this poll anyway? Serious polls need to be representative. So Guinness lost all its credability.

If it's by sales, the original Super Mario Bros. almost doubles the sales of the entire Halo franchise. WoW also has more active subscribers than Halo has boxed copies sold (and there are definitely way more boxed copies sold of WoW than active subscribers).
Plus, how do you even count the number of "sales" for Runescape, which is free-to-play?
This list is kind of pointless.. there is probably a top 10 that would be pretty significant games(of course Guinness got it entirely wrong) but then after that theres about a zillion really popular console FPS games that are all interchangeable in the list and pretty much crap (objectively. i do have a lot of fun playing some of them though) ex. gears of war, bioshock, halo, battlefront, etc..
Saw Halo at #1 and knew this list had ZERO credibility immediately...

The only revolutionary thing about Halo CE is the fact that they managed to make a somewhat good shooter for consoles, that didnt have shitty controls. That doesnt qualify anywhere near top 20(or perhaps even 50) in my book, but hey, just my opinion.
Well we'll just have to accept that the majority does not appreciate StarCraft like we do..
actually they also had a Guiness World Record for Gaming and StarCraft was there. There were pages about BoxeR and NaDa and it's history but it was pretty outdated when it wrote there that NaDa was the only person ever to win a golden mouse (which of course we now know that July and Jaedong have theirs..)

halos were all extemely successful, but still over 70% of the copies were sold in america.
You can chalk that up to the PC versus Console distribution, more people are likely to own PCs than Console, you're more likely to find a PC cafe than a Console cafe and so on.

This is just a poll done to an obviously north american late teen - early 20s group population with the claim best games of all time? Whats next? If they wanted to do it scientifically, theyd have to get the same people who voted back, and ask them again every year...

Yes I am biased and yes I believe that Starcraft, among other more mature games should be better rated, but this just goes to show the naivety of some people, who think that an online poll [that no one knows about] would be a better measure than people who somewhat know what they're talking about (in terms of the effect the games have had on the industry and their current following).

Asking this question to the general public (mostly 13-17 year old who haven't touched a console before the Xbox) can only give a horrible result, Halo being number 1 confirms this.
You would ask the public about the best movies of all time and The Dark Knight would probably be number 1. Although it's a great movie, it wouldn't belong even in top 100.

I never look at these lists as anything other than a popularity contest. Some of the best games most people have never heard of. Where is Deus Ex? Syberia? Longest Journey and Dreamfall? These are the games that make the medium Art.

After reading the list and some other comments it struck me that WoW, Halo, COD and other bad Xbox games are on the top 10. This list was obviously made up by 13 year old kids...

This is some joke list, there are no real games that created genres - ID Software Shooters (Wolf / Doom / Hexen / Heretic / Quake) etc... Gran Turismo is one of the biggest series and king of it's genre, yet 38?
Some console fail going on here, even though I own two of the last gen systems, this list is a huge fat joke. There isn't even Civilization or Age of Empires...
