A lich is an undead being whose "life"-span is infinite, as long as its phylactery (an object of some kind that contains the lich's soul) isn't destroyed. Futo achieves immortality in a similar manner, though it's not quite the same as being a lich. The quote in question from the Symposium: There are many ways to become a shikaisen, it seems she used the "completely abandoning the body, transferring the soul onto some object. When the time comes, that object will change into her, and her corpse will change into that object." method. So, while a lich permanently houses its soul in its phylactery to sustain its immortality, a shikaisen like Futo temporarily houses its soul into a "phylactery" until it dies; when death occurs, the temporary phylactery destroys itself to resurrect the shikaisen, and transmogrifies the shikaisen's corpse into the object used as the phylactery. It's a self-sustaining system. You're right that Futo jewed Tojiko out of becoming a shikaisen, though. What a bitch. | ||

Although in the end Tojiko's side won, it seems she responded to Futo's appeal to work together in secret. The details of the plan were along the lines of "We'll let Buddhism rule for now, but after Miko revives and becomes a powerful leader we can both revive as her chiefs of staff." The temporary body that she's using is a jar(*1). She wanted to move to a new body that would never decay, but Futo switched it with an unbaked jar. If Tojiko attached her soul to it, it would easily melt away. To prevent that, she gave up on having a physical body and remained a bourei. As for why Futo did such a thing, it's surely because of a grudge from the conflict between their two families that led to the downfall of the Mononobe. Although she realized the deception immediately after becoming a bourei, it turned out that not having a physical body was surprisingly pleasant so she doesn't seem to mind too much. | ||

i just don't think it makes a lot of sense bitch is almost as incompetent (but not quite) as reisen, she doesn't have the intrigue/coordination to pull it off | ||
