I included Halo in the FAQ because I am misunderstood on that. I was wrong to joke around like I did but I was in fact joking.. HOW MAD people got only proves I was on to something I am just not the right guy to make those jokes.@Phil Phoenix: This is something I struggle with. I agree, people in my position SHOULD be accessible and open to the community. But it is that belief that wins me equal respect and hate. I don't know. I don't want to go full day9 where I literally pay people to buffer the community from me and I don't want to go Totalbiscuit where I respond to almost everything and it does me harm that way.. where is the middle ground? (as a note, I am not hating on either of them.. both have their methods/beliefs, just using it as an example) I want to be candid on SOTG, ITG, my stream etc.. but I mention Huk gets a new contract and BOOM it's top 5 reddit with people misconstruing my wording and assuming I told the public he got some shitty contract because of his recent results.. wtf? YES I accept this comes with the territory.. what I am openly discussing here is HOW do I handle that? Do I play it safe and do what day9 does? Never post, don't read and only talk positively? Or do I stay the way I am and be as honest as I can? Don't know.

On August 09 2012 00:41 Phil Phoenix wrote: How does becoming less accessible make you a better community figure? It's kind of the opposite of the word community. Also, the definition of "figurehead" is a leader or head without any real power, which is the opposite of what you are. ![]() There is a trend. The more of a community figure one is, the greater number of people they must deal with, and thus the more reclusive they must be. Being in a high ranking position in the community doesn't just happen; it requires more and more work. How else can one continue to work longer and harder if they are supposed to deal with an exponentially increasing group of people. Celebrities, for example, are community figures. But their communities consist of entire nations or continents. I don't think many people don't know the name "Brad Pitt". If I asked you to think of what he looks like, you probably could. The level of fan interaction must necessarily decrease over time as the fan base increases over time. The SC2 community as a whole is rather negative. When someone is doing really well, we all love them. The second they begin to decline we see everyone laughing at them. Just go read all the bans in the Jinro retires thread, it's truly saddening. As much as we love to talk about how much we hate the drama and the negativity, we eat that shit for breakfast. So as a figure grows in this community, he or she will indeed encounter exponentially higher levels of "go kill yourself" and "no one likes you", and exponentially lower levels of "you're doing a good job" and "keep it up". So for iNcontroL to ignore all the trolls, he's not ignoring all the trolls per se. He is following in the foot steps of every growing community figure, in SC2 and elsewhere. It just so happens that in SC2 "community" and "troll" are interchangeable. And I was ninja'ed by Geoff, who made great and personal points. But I think this is still a good point to make, so I will leave it up.

I get a lot of hate because I responded to a lot the negativity and have continued to do more of that responding than I should. Additionally, I have apologized for things publicly which means if a group of people say something enough times I will not only respond but sometimes apologize for whatever they are complaining about. That is a troll gold mine. The only reason a troll says stupid things on a throwaway account is to get a reaction from the target OR those around them. They do this because they want attention, the find it funny and they are usually pretty lonely. Yes I say controversial things. Yes I am really fortunate with the team I am on and the opportunities I am given.. but so are other people. The difference is they are not on shows, don't respond / read community comments and they most certainly don't apologize/react to trolling in any way. The answer is as I move forward I need to do a better job of not responding or acknowledging it at all. This is hard for me because part of what I have grown up doing is being a part of the community (27k posts here.. hello). As I remain and become more of a community figurehead one of the necessary parts of that is becoming more and more inaccessible to the people. Less posting, less responding and pretty much no references at all that I do in fact read/respond. Said that many a time.. and believe it or not I HAVE gotten better about it but I am still not where I need to be on that! Lets do a quick FAQ about this as well! Q: you lose a lot, maybe if you win you'd not have haters? A: False. Everyone loses a lot. Most people lose more, a lot more. If I won more the trolls would have LESS to go on but they would move on to something else. I want to win and have always worked at it but it was never motivated to "stop the trolls" as that is a non-sequitor. Q: Maybe if you were skinny? A: False. Skinny people are awesome but I will never be an awesome skinny dude. Striving to be an awesome gigantic dude atm. Wish me luck.. and protein. Q: People think you are passive aggressive and arrogant, what if you were more direct and humble? A: Yeah I could do that if I was really dumb and not so awesome. Q: Do you hate reddit? (or halo) A: No. Reddit is a part of the same community I love and talk about all the time but it has a cultural difference from TL or other spaces in that it's cool to attack and say the most brash thing in each thread in an attempt to get easy upvotes and draw attention. I get it.. just not what I prefer. I think TL is the better place to conversate and I go to reddit to get a quick pulse on what people think/do. Halo is ok btw.. but the people that play it bring out the troll in ME (irony). Q: Does the trolling bother you? A: Used to! Doesn't at all currently.. very comfortable with myself and where I am going and how I am getting there. The only reason I am addressing this is because it can serve as an educational piece for others soon to go down the same path I have. Think that covers it.. if peeps have q's post em here I will give it some more attention (as needed). Ty for responding (: Love your cast and playstyle. The reason why I asked is the guy whom you played yesterday on your stream. That zerg guy who killed your main and natural nexus and said "go out plz" and you came back :D I had to laugh a lot. :D Well, I wish you Protein!

A: Yeah I could do that if I was really dumb and not so awesome. My InControl experience has been that he is direct and humble. I dunno where this came from, and I , uh, intensely disliked the way 2GD teased him all through Asus ROG. I mostly watch Mr Robinson in his formal outfit at tournaments (I am an occasional stream viewer). I like his straight-forwardness and charisma, his presence and presentation naturally conveys to anyone tuning in "this is cool, and you should see more of this". I wonder about the word "humble". My best guess at defining it is that he plays his part, does it with style and dignity(most of the time, refraining from commenting too much on issues that require general education is advised) and rarely over-does himself. As in, he knows what his job is, he gets it done (and does it well!) and doesn't step on other people's toes. In regards to 2GD, he could be more direct, just "play it straight" and ask if the motherfucker wants his ass kicked (I would love to hear 2GD say that he is calling the cops or that he hired ThorZain as his bodyguard or something.. this is just how you handle arrogant english guys).

I don't think it has anything to do with that, It's not cause you lose alot. i hear from alot of people that they don't care for you because you don't have results, you get paid and you're a big part of the community. I don't see why they hate you so much but you know, they envy you're status in the community. GL Geoff! hope you get the results

I like what you do and god damn, if you were as good playing the fucking game as you are entertaining in front of a camera, you would be Mr. American Bonjwa in our faces. Wish you the best of success getting better and better and getting where you want to be! Just don't throw with stones inside a glass house :-) Reddit hasn't murdered someone in quite a while now.
