If you miss it / want to rewatch the show will be on Artosis' youtube (ArtosisTV) immediately after the episode and uploaded to iTunes as a podcast (this is still being worked on). VODS also available to subs at any time on Twitch.
What: Starcraft talk show discussing both SC2 and SC:R. Topics will range from meta, results, predictions, streamers, builds, matchups etc etc.. nothing is off limits so long as it pertains to Starcraft!
Guests: Range from community personalities like casters, streamers to progamers or behind the scenes folk. We may even invite on folks who have moved on from Starcraft!
Artosis and I can talk about Starcraft forever and we wanted a place to do that.. so we made a show. We hope this will be long standing and great. Certainly with our travel episodes will be missed but we remain committed to bringing this scene and community something to be proud of.
This thread can be used for comments and questions. Lets try and keep it civil / constructive (that goes for me too!). Like something? Let me know.. don't like something? Just try and communicate it fairly!
Great news, and I'm glad to hear it will be available on Youtube afterwards, as I may not be free to watch the first episode. Question: will the show go on for a set amount of time or will it be more of a free form "talk until there's nothing left to talk about" kind of thing? (Meaning each episode, not the series as a whole).
Sounds like a good time and I'm looking forward to it, cheers

Not sure how to answer this:
1. is this a show that has a set time each day? A: yeah about 2 hours..
2. is this a show that will end when you've discussed everything SC/SC2 has to offer? A: That isn't possible.
Very very nice. Couple of questions: * How focused on a certain topic will the episodes be (or more freestyle rambling)? * Any topics planned yet? * Why this (for me) terrible time slot? * I just realized what the title is about, took me way too long. Nice choice. * I'm terrible at the game and have never done anything remotely important in sc, what do I need to do to be invited to the show?

1. Dunno, we will see. 2. Nope. 3. Dan is in korea and this day/time avoids most of our travel. 4. k 5. Paypal me $500 I will get you on.
A show that covers both StarCrafts? People try so hard to keep the two apart that I'm intrigued to see how a co-op initiative would work. Would it be discussions broken down as such: Week 1 - SC1 Week 2 - SC2, etc? To keep the respective fans separated? Or more a free flow between the two games however the wind blows as you guys chat/guests that are on the show?
I thought nowadays there is so much content and so little used in any similar form, great job to both of you for putting up with this and I think the show will be atleast as good as your casting (which in my opinion is by far the very best), can barely wait to see whats in store! Good luck!
Sweet, I am excited about this. I usually can't watch live because that's when I am eating dinner with my wife and kid, but I will definitely try to watch the video the following day! Thanks for doing this
Please, no predictions. GEOFF, PLEASE, NO PREDICTIONS!!! Let the curse sleep!!!!
Cannot wait for VODs(if I did the math correctly, it's 2 AM CEST, ma passion is not that strong )
Edit> I mean don't allow Artosis to predict something. remember what he did to soO. "I'm certain now he will advance"(or something similar) was said during the ro4, soO was in the lead 3:1 against Stats. How did that end we all know. Let the curse sleep!!!!
Is there any possible way that I can be on a list or something to be on this show? I only ask because the very idea of talking Starcraft with Geoff and Dan sounds like the ultimate way for me to geek out over Starcraft.

This is going to be awesome, thank you for arranging this iNc!!! I miss watching all of you guys on shows like SOTG
I follow BW a lot more than I do SC2 nowadays but I'm still interested in hearing about the state of both games. One of the most interesting topics I'd love for you guys to cover though is old stories from the earlier days of Brood War and stuff like that.
Needless to say I'll be tuning in for every show you guys put out ^^ I really respect and admire your ongoing dedication to Starcraft and willingness to support the scene. I think it makes a very big difference to have things like this going on in the community.

Oh my gawd you brought back such memories ! That was so fun !
Having listened to sotg, inside the game and stuff nice ! It's always a blast! looking forward to it < 3
I think the key to running long standing shows for esports would be to make it less a (big deal) needing extensive production on every episode (or even live streamed). If you were at the airport using a phone to talk about lastest and greatest happenings I think that could be very interesting. Like Maru's win at GSL, I wanted to know Tastosis', your views, other casters etc... but most are just comments in passing, but like a good analysis on it would be great.

Chael Sonnen did his MMA podcast while he was inside his car as his car was going through an automated car wash.
Are you guys interested in taking live questions from viewers (particularly skype calls)? That's always a cool thing to listen to, and I think it's the kind of interaction with the community that has been missing on these past several years.

At this time no skype calls. Possibility of doing something along those lines.. but no plan to. Questions from chat? Threads? Yeah for sure.
As someone who got into Starcraft near the middle of HotS (discovered it during Blizzcon in 2014), I missed out on SotG. As I got more into StarCraft, I went back and watched old vods and have always have hoped that something like that would happen again because while the vods were funny, I have a feeling that actually understanding the jokes about balance and such would make watching it live even more entertaining.
First of all thank you for this. I'll look forward to it. Will surely be awesome.
You say you want to upload it to iTunes as Podcast. I'm totally not into the apple universe. Since Spotify has a podcast functionality too could you try to upload it there too? That would be awesome.

iTunes just has a directory for podcasts that are hosted anywhere and have an RSS feed. You don't need any specific software to listen to podcasts, neither iTunes nor Spotify. Or in other words, if a podcast is on itunes you can listen to it with any device and media player of your choosing.
We will be doing guests of various different shapes and sizes. Asking specifically for who you guys would like won't get a "YES" but is definitely worth doing since maybe you will think of someone I haven't or I can gauge interest etc.
Show is set for this Wednesday, 5:30 PM PDT (artosis asked for 30 minutes because he's special)
I'd hope for WhiteRa talking in all seriousness, not his usual tomfoolery, about what his favourite maps and strats and why. Also how gaming is in a country that's in a dire place like Ukraine.
Also, not sure if anyone else pointed it out yet: The 'pun' in the show's name is intentional, isn't it? As in iNcontroL's and Artosis' The Pylon.
Will this have SC-BW icon and talk esclusively of SC2 or will it really be about what its said in OP (both SC2 and SC:R)? TL-BOT note > No need for warning please, it's ONLY a question ...
Suggested topic of discussion: ideal format and presentation/production of nation wars. Seems like the current iteration is very different from what BW nation wars were. How should teams be formed? What kind of tone should the hosts and casters and interviews go for?
Guessing you already have a full show planned but you could talk about it next episode since NW isn't done yet, it'll still be relevant.

Regarding podcasts going on iTunes/Spotify. There should really just be an RSS feed upload, that way listeners can use any of their chosen Podcast programs/apps to download and listen (for example, I use Podcast Addict on Android).

As I've written before: There already is an RSS feed because there is no such thing as uploading a podcast to iTunes. You just tell iTunes what the URL of your RSS feed is. You can subscribe to this show on Podcast Addict or whatever client you want.
Having seen the entirety of the series between THERIDDLER and avilo, and knowing THERIDDLER's reputation, I have to disagree with Artosis' assessment that Blizzard shouldn't have warned him for trolling and not trying to win the game. He quite clearly could have have won the second game in a much much more expedient fashion, and one of his teammate mentioned on Discord that THERIDDLER was intentionally drawing things out.
I really enjoy it, i can listen to both of you for hours, great talkshow!!
If i can add some feedback, I think you guys focused too much in the personalities around the game instead of the layers and the game itself, which is fine and understandable, but i would have love to hear your about your opions to the meta, playstyle of players etc..... It remind me a little bit about a common issue on periodism, that is periodism talk more about itslef rather than other topics.
To the Tournaments outside of Korea with/without Blizzard topic.
I think the biggest issue regarding that is Blizzards marketing itself. They done the Remaster etc, but all the events they sponsored were casual events. While this is not a negative aspect on its own, but it lets you question if Blizzard has any faith in SC:R as a eSport product on their own. When a company has no trust in its own product why should a third-party tourney organizer chip in? And its not like there are no opportunities. In Europe we have TakeTV and Dreamhack if you want to cooperate with established companies. We also don't need a huge prizepool with 6 digit figures.
Additionally there is Blizzard tournament fees and/or other conditions that are holding everyone back. Also I have a very mixed impression from Blizzard itself. It feels like some people are very passionate about Remaster and some people have nearly no connection to it and see it as another product in the portfolio.

Don't worry about that as long as you keep uploading on Youtube we're completely fine
Loved the show guys! Any chance Jaeyun could be a guest? I know they've been doing some team battles! I'm interested in how foreign brood war players are climbing without big tournaments.
I would like to see a discussion on the impact of things such as match-fixing and the prevalence of fake teams. Particularly on how this has affected the community by making us very jaded and distrusting of new teams popping up. I think this is one of the key problems limiting the growth of the game as we essentially expect new teams and ventures to turn out to be scams.

Also how this affects the players and if there's anything needed to be done for their protection. Because this can kill careers.

Oh, I understand. Of course I'll keep it up with the vod after work time. Keep up the awesomeness Geoff!!
Just learned about this show. Really enjoying ep 1 so far (halfway in).
If it's not in the second half of this episode, would love to hear about how SC:R could get more attention. I mean ASL 5 was even delayed, so that's concerning. But is there any hope for foreign SC:R, or anything else. The game is a tad frustrating to play but it's by a mile my favorite game [period] to watch. What can be done? Is it a player issue--in that there aren't enough people playing--or is it a Blizzard support issue?
edit: sweet, you addressed it.
If i had the money i would put my own 50k tournament on and invite all you guys.
edit 2: is there a world wherein we could get a crowdfunded SC:R tournament? I understand it'd be a band aid on a larger problem but maybe just to keep the steam going. I would put in $20 to watch the plott brothers, incontrol and artosis commentate a foreigner/Korean invitational over a weekend or something.
maybe including koreans would be hard unless they could fly themselves. i just want something to happen.
LOVED the show guys! Thank you so much for putting this on, you always have such great chemistry whenever you’re together.
Any chance you could talk about the past/current meta of Brood War? You’ve both been around so long (from when the game came out, through Boxer and through the bonjwas, etc.), I’d love to hear how the game has changed and evolved and what strategies people are trending towards these days.

I was wondering if you could talk a bit about a typical casters schedule (I.e. during a GSL or WCS season). To the lay-person, it might seem as though you cast for 3-5 hours 2-4 times a week, so what do you do with all the time left over? Perhaps you could talk about all the other things you guys are involved in as casters and analysts, what goes in to preparation, any other responsibilities you might find yourself involved in, etc.
I would be interested in your opinion on ghost + raven lategame in tvz. A lot of people think it might be too strong and if the terran gets enough of both units the zerg cannot really win anymore. Personally i think we still need to see more games being played by all kinds of different players to get a better idea (balance) but the gameplay itself isn't something i think sc2 should be about (lots of spellcasters trading energy for money). I would just be interested in your opinion on it, thanks!

Totally agree with Artosis, Nony and Incontrol about Nation Wars. I wish the format would go away from the popularity voting into all kill format, where it becomes "One-Player-from-this-Nation Wars" instead of "real" Nation Wars.
I may be a bit biased, because I think Germany would have easily beaten Finland for example if it wasn't for the all kill format with an additional revive. But in my opinion, a country's depth in players should be rewarded a bit more, instead of being fortunate enough to have the one star player of the last months in its' ranks.

Talk about whether or not the 4 month stretch from BlizzCon to IEM PyeongChang was a giant blip, and the foreigner-Korea gap has again corrected itself to normal levels :O

Great shows. Not a big fun of SC2 (I'm not drooping hate here), but hosting duo makes SC2 topics very interesting so I enjoy listening them.
Nony is an absolute star, could listen to him talk about anything just like Day9.
Perhaps sometime in the future you could have Jaeyun as a guest. As I remember during Zotac he had very good match analysis and comments regarding BW topics.
Are you considering getting some Korean pro with a good English on? MC, Parting, Solar? Maybe others(no clue) Edit - I know MC is not into SC2 anymore and Parting isn't that sucessfull beyond the ladder, but they're mostly examles(and I fucking love Parting).
BTW - if you would answer this question in the next show - who of the current Pros has the best body and who's the most handsome? (I dare you not say Zest or NaDa)
iNcontroL maybe you should update the OP with a link to your discord so people can put their questions in there, as the current OP still says, that this thread is also for questions, but somewhere in the thread you said that you wanted to get a system going which only takes questions from discord.
I'd like to ad something, a compromise basically, to the Nation Wars discussion you were having with Funka and Nony the show before. I got the impression that the problem with implementing Proleague format mainly is reluctance to raise the team size to 4 because that would make things more complicated (and more expensive). However, you can just have a player of each (3 player) team prepare for 2 of the total 4 maps played in a BO5. Then, if an ace match is needed, that player cannot be revived. In other words: A player isn't allowed to play more than 2 maps each match. This means a team with at least 2 players that can take maps have a bigger advantage over the "one man teams" than in the current all kill format that is used.
It's of course entirely possible this is not new information for the O'Gaming crew but I didn't notice any one mention this, hence this post.

To help with discussion. One thing I thought was very important about game 5, was where Snow took his third base. He mounted a solid ground defense so he could utilize a third base that he knew Flash would take eventually. This is important because Terrans expect the 5 o'clock base on Third World to be theirs. Snow was brilliant because his whole plan was to steal as many resources as he could from that location extending the life of his normal third base that he took later in the game, meanwhile Flash finally takes that base which is half mined out and his main and natural are nearly out of resources too.

Na he wanted to take the 3rd on the "island" but FlaSh engi blocked it , he didnt wanna bring his shuttle back to destroy the engi bay so he just took the bottom right expo. That's probably why he decided to go for arbs 1st instead of teching to carriers right away.

It doesn't take away the advantage he got by making the bold decision to take the 5' as his third. You bring up a great point though, and it dives even deeper into how well Snow responded and played against Flash that game.

Loving the show. I wonder if you guys would like to do a regular/somewhat regular segment like "game of the week". You could cover your favorite matchup or playstyle, and it would help draw attention to different players. Thanks again for the show.
Oh lol, I'd completely missed all the Hangzhou drama. The funny thing is that the replays were released the day of the event (in fact most of the replays were released even before the finals was over), and I had to point that out to Wardi on Reddit three days after the event was over. And judging by Twitter none of the foreign pros knew about the replays either until Wardi tweeted out that he was casting things.
So beating everyone else to the punch would've been pretty easy.

I agree.
You can understand what he's saying even if it cuts out, in 95% of the cases, but it's annoying because it happens constantly. I can't stand not hearing that amazing Dan laugh. :D

Yeah, but iirc that person only did VODs and didn't stream things.
True...although I don't think many people would have noticed even had they been streamed. I just found it funny that while the streaming replays issue was going on, someone had already cast the replays roughly two days before.
Just a headsup this next episode is Artosis solo host with guests. I am flying to London to compete in my first international Warhammer40k event the "London GT" where I will also go see Games Workshop and spend time in England. It's a week trip so I might miss the following episode as well.

Artosis will do amazing of course <3
Wowowo good luck! I have friends coming from Italy to compete at the GT enjoy and I hope you will have fun!
The Nottingham GW headquarter is *amazing*. I went there for the first time last year, after 15y of playing warhammer, and I spent the whole day with a friend glued to the displays, and wandering in the FW shop, excited like a 10 years old on Christmas day !

Gentlemen , I was high as fuck last evening and because I am on my daily fix of starcraft on teamliquid I saw the pylon show thread, I heard Artosis mentioning it on the gsl and asl channel so I thought I would give it a go.
What a smart idea was that. When I write this post, next day, I only saw episode one and right now I only know for sure a couple of things : - that was awesome. Pure gold from beginning to end.
- if the quality doesn't change I have found my weekly catch up with starcraft show .I have something for friday evenings
- I want to give you money so that you can keep saying "fuck" and "shit" and most important keep you as honest as you can be because I am not a pussy looking for comfort, I want the truth.
- and I want different voices to be heard. There are personalities I hate but if they have the supporters they deserve to be here . Because I remember Idra's stream and how nothing that guy did made me hate him. I don't know why, but at the same time I could easily understand how some people might hate him. I wasn't trying to go easy on him, I wanted him to do well all the time. I hated seeing him as his biggest obstacle in his way, but I tried to learn from that.
Anyway , I think you guys are smart. I realized for a while now that starcraft players of all levels are smart, determined and pasionate about the game they love. That's what brings us here in spite of any other differences we have. When I am in game I hate Terran with a passion and life is just not fair when the protos close me inside my base with canons and then destroy me with void rays or some other disgusting shit .
But when I prevail, aaa ... what a feeling . . I digress too much.
To touch on the subjects you guys had in ep one :
You have so many things right. It's crazy !
First : The truth will set us free . No matter the subject , no matter how painful if we don't make an honest effort to see the situation as it is, we can't improve it . And that takes balls. Well done !!
Second : I want more Starcraft Remastered too but if the companies are not endorsing it, it's on you guys. I can only support it with my money. I have a job I have to keep , a family to support , I can only do what I can.
Third :I've been racking my brains for months on how to support the korean sc scene . And by that I mean how to give korean sc content developers money. I still have no idea . I share all good games sc 1 or 2 with friends that can not keep watching the scene because life but watch a good game from time to time.
Forth : Foreigners willing to battle koreans on their own terms should be encouraged. I can only respect the commitment it takes to move where the best in the world are and try to learn from them, and try to take them down.
Fifth : Fans made brood war an esport. Fans cam make it a game of the future too. We have to sell the future, not the past. I think lower grafics make it a perfect game to share with children . If I ever have any I can't wait to destroy them and see their levels slowly grow, and have the replays to watch through when I am no longer here.
Sixth : It's in the same area with 5. Passion drives things forward, not money . If you really think about it everything that happens makes sense. You turned your passion into your career and as an emigrant , and a man I respect the hard life you endured to make this possible. Well it's clear that the same kind of people don't work for sc remastered right now. Sometimes it takes time to get the right people in the right place. In the end all that really matters is that the people who love it, do something about it. And this show is an amazing way to do that !
Really enjoyed the show, felt like something very different and interesting.
I think i will have a look at some brood war games, the part of not being able to play it but still enjoying to watch it was on point. I don't think I'll ever be able to play that game on an acceptable level but i always had a soft spot for it in my heart.
Nowadays there is SC2 so I won't even try to get into it anymore XD but yea still a great game, had lots of fun with it with friends on an abyssal level but still.
I watched the second episode and started the third and there is so much cool stuff i can't even get to everything.
I would need to watch the episodes again and make notes to get it all but i won't ':-).
I loved the talk about that pylon the should have been build. Getting your insights on that was quiet neat.
I also loved the talk about commentators and i gotta say I liked no regrets commentate GSL. He actually had some very insightful things to say especially in the zerg games.
I get that commentators need to get the excitement up but i think that informing the viewers of the intricate things of a certain strategy a pro is actually attempting and hinting at what the other might need to do to fight against that is really a great way to ramp up the excitement.
I hope i am not making Dan quit this show by saying a few of these upcoming things , but i have to criticise him and tasteless a bit. You guys are very good players and veterans i would love to have a bit more of the strategy talk of you guys, like mentioned from no regret. Sometimes you guys just completely goof off and that's cool to i enjoy you laugh your asses off but yea the show could be a bit more informative (GSL that is) and i could imagine that especially newer viewers would rather understand what they are watching and what really is exciting about it.
The other point of criticism is that often while goofing around you miss quiet important things your very great observer is actually pointing you at. Shout out to them great observers. Sometimes you even miss things you wondered about, like did he loose unit X or similar things, use your resource attention better XD sorry had to go there .
Okay i hope that wasn't too harsh cause I'd like to continue seeing this show even with you Dan XD.
The last point i wanna touch on for now is funka talking about the all kill format. I think he is spot on a lot of the excitement is really created through the possibility of the all kill. He is so right about the best player vs weak players would probably not too interesting. Also Dan gets excited about great players winning constantly, thats something they can do in the all kill format. They get to show just how good they are, serral defended a zealot all in with like a single hydra and his drones and queens. So yea i see the point for the pro league format but the all kill one has i would say at least similarly much excitement.
Okay I'll prolly come back later with more stuff that got me all excited
I loved a lot in the third episode but one thing that i really experienced myself as of late was the practicing with friends to get better.
I have two friends who's mmr is usually about 200-400 better than mine and practicing with them helps but it's not so super frustrating, we practiced ZvT cause i have tons of trouble against drop play and man they dicked me almost all the time at some point we had to stop playing cause i was just getting mad and i the. Ich calm down a bit before i could thank them for taking the time XD
Listened on soundcloud to the first 4 episodes. I really enjoyed them, thanks guys for doing this, you are awesome.
Also the invites were so good, Tyler with his direct telling on what is wrong, good analysis, Rotterdam was also awesome, he is I guess one of the best sc2 personalities out there, human wikipedia. Also really really enjoyed Artosis story about how we went to Korea and become a caster.
Overall this is a great show, hope you will never quit doing it.
Funny enough first Pylon Show without Incontrol, and it was the best episode. I'm not impyling that Incontrol ruins it, but just pointing the fun fact.
The best because it was free of those loooooong life stories, memories and shit. It was pure about Starcraft, balance talk, challenger results analysis, gsl predictions. Great episode. I hope for more things like that, rather than life story of Rifkin or someone like that.

I'm not saying this episode was bad, not at all, it would just be even better with some storytelling

I'm 100% with you on that, I really love the stories and stuff from earlier in the BW days. Straight up tournament talk, etc. isn't what made SotG so great for example, it was all the hilarious stories, drunken jokes, and stuff like that mixed in with top level Starcraft analysis.
So yeah, for me at least the long-winded stories/memories are among the primary reasons why I enjoy tuning in. I'm a bit biased at this point but my only real ask would be even more Brood War (SC:R) discussion!
Just unfortunate timing. We picked weds as the day of he show because it’s least likely to run into travel issues.. then I have a streak of travel that literally begins and ends on a weds lol.
Sad news is I’m missing next episode as well with a gig in LA but after that I’m good to go. June travel is insane for me. I’m casting WCS challenger as well coming up. Thankfully Artosis is too expensive to hire so he isn’t busy.

It may be healthy for the show to have an ongoing goal that we check in on every week, such as how to curate another special foreign brood war tournament or how to get more aspiring amateurs into competitive sc2, like the old mlg days. Some sort of story line to couple with the discussion topics we already have, as a bit of an interesting color-balance.

The next season of Game of Thrones had to get pushed back from the original release date because they were afraid ratings would be lower if they competed with this show.
No episode this week guys! Dan has KSL and I have HSC. We will return the following week! Sorry for the inconvenience but hope to see you all the following week <3
Just avoided spoilers on last nights GSL, finished it, and tuned in to episode 12. I feel like I have fallen into a portal back in time, and I'm loving it.
Same here, just want to say thank you Artosis and iNcontroL and everyone who's involved! I watched all the show, it's very fun to know the behind the scene stuff. And get to hear iNcontroL to be w/e he likes to be!

How is that "so damn big"?
Sounds like 256Kbps MP3 encoding. Decent quality audio. I mean sure you could half the file size or go down even more if you wanted to listen to a podcast that sounded like 2007 era YouTube but are you really that strapped for disk space?

Really enjoying this show so far. Love the BW discussion. I agree that Rain is going to win the KSL. He's been such a good player for a good period now.
Thank you for basically dedicating an episode to BW, I really enjoyed it! I know iNcontroL had some bad experiences with idiots on the BW forum who were complaining about literally everything when it came to the few events that did happen after launch, so I was happy to see this episode happen at all and there was some great discussion.
As one of the players who quit the game a little after release but would absolutely love to come back if there was something like a large tournament with everyone else coming back, I was happy to hear that your thoughts matched mine. The viewer numbers were great for the launch event and Christmas stream, not so much for the Italian Open but that wasn't advertised too much and it competed with Blizzcon anyways. Yet it didn't seem like Blizzard put much more of an effort into the foreign scene after that. Obviously they're doing a lot with KSL, so maybe we just have to accept that Remastered was made for the Korean scene.
I just feel like the game didn't have much of a chance out of the gate. I remember watching streams where people couldn't find ladder games cause the matchmaking was broken, or they'd get the laggiest games ever, or they'd just get discouraged by a ladder system that was pretty much meaningless. The lack of team matchmaking is also disheartening; so much of Remastered just feels incomplete. If they had waited to release until some of these basic features were in place, maybe more people would've stuck around.
Hi Geoff, Dan. I just finished listening to Episode 18, and I want to firstly thank you for giving my upcoming showmatch a mention. I Really appreciated it. Also was so stoked that you guys basically dedicated that episode to talking about the Broodwar scene. I have a few Ideas as someone who is trying to create content in the Foreign Broodwar scenes. We are lacking acutely both Sponsorships and networking in the Broodwar scene. What you said about there not being a common meeting place for new players is absolutely true. The CPL Imo is the most valuable foreign tournament because its bringing new people in and sending them on upward trajectories. I have had alot of friends come over from SC2 and I always point them to CPL, because it gives people a reason to practice hard, the tangible reward of playing opponents in your skill range, and winning and losing with a team. Queuing up on ladder for hours at a time gets boring pretty fast for most people and a green sc2 player will likely fizzle with out something like CPL. But even getting the word out is difficult.
A lack of sponsors goes hand in hand with the networking problem, because its hard to point to something as tangible evidence of a active and healthy community when it is dispersed across a wide range of platforms with each cluster not always aware of the other ones. Matcherino is a awesome one and I hope that in the future there will be more. I'm not sure if you were aware of the SKTL, but it had several larger sponsors and many of those got cold feet after that event went sour. Even something like that can really set things back. Usually its not hard to find players to populate a tourney, they are eager for events.
I like the parrallel you drew with Smash Mele, because I think that game is living proof that Broodwar could become much more popular again in the Foreign scene. There are alot of factors involved in how this could happen but I think Broodwar envagelism could become better. Less focus on how hard it is, and more on how rewarding the wins are. The raw mechanical skill required to play is not something that is a effective pitch, but It is so often used as one.
I am reallly hopeful for Broodwar and I will be doing everything I can to help it grow by giving showmatches and other events to some of the top foreigners where I can. Everytime you guys do things for Broodwar, Believe me we are super grateful and would love more!
Finally got around to listening to the show and just a few comments about the foreign broodwar segment since I know you said use the thread to voice your opinions. I know I spam you with my content every week and it was mentioned in passing a few times during the episode so I do thank you a lot for that, but as someone who's been trying to work out how to grow my tournament and followed the melee scene for years I have a few suggestions that I hope people would be open to.
I clipped this moment with Scar and Toph at EVO and it resonates with me a lot.
Scar mentions about how the entire community managed to band together and make it into EVO, now of course that's a little bit harder for Broodwar, but the idea is the same. If we want the scene to grow I feel like it's going to take a lot of help from the entire community. Without the community streamers have nobody to show their content to and I feel like we're ignoring a lot of the ways to increase the size of said community.
I know yourselves are very busy with your own projects and you're waiting for something big to come along to get everyone interested in, but if we are to take the grass roots approach of Melee seriously then I think we need to look at some of the other things that happened. The big names in the community were putting their names behind smaller community tournaments and helping them grow and I feel like that's one thing that could really be improved on in the community. I'm not really a big name so I don't have the kind of reach, but I try and retweet and tweet every single Broodwar event I can. I may have a small following but every little helps and I was wondering is there any way in which we can get people like you guys involved in this?
I feel if we really want the Broodwar scene to grow we need to make the community tournaments bigger. If the community tournaments get bigger then the viewership increases. The more viewers there are the more likely sponsors are to get involved and I personally think that's how we can grow the scene as a collective unit. Of course, I'm somewhat biased as someone who puts in a hell of a lot of hours to try and push STPL as far as I can, but I think it's community support that really helped people in a similar situation in frontier land SC2 like Rifkin.
We are super grateful for everything you do already, it would be nice if we could maybe get some additional support from yourselves and Blizzard to really start to try and kick things in an upward trajectory. I'll continue hosting the STPL for as long as humanly possible and I'm trying to push the production value up as high as I possibly can. Rapid casts with me and I always have amazing fun doing it and I'd like do it for 10 viewers if I had to, but I know that we can take tournaments like the community tournaments we already have from the 70-150 average viewers we normally have to 300, 500 and even 1,000. The people are there, I think we just need help from the bigger guys to really help advertise it on twitter and what not imo!
Thanks again for the show, it was a great listen and huge thanks for getting Schamtoo and Jaeyun involved! :D

Having the author of "The Greatest Article in the World" on the Pylon Show to discuss TL.net moderation and as well as casting criticism would make for tense conversation, but would be riveting to listen to. I'm all for it.

As fun as Olli would be, any of the admins would do. KadaverBB would be nice. I'm not sure if any of them would go on though, as I said it's just something I'd like to see.
I'd be cool to consider two different topics: starcraft journalism where I'd like to see someone like stuchiu or Soularion (The Good, Bad, and Ugly of WCS Austin is my favorite TL article), and Team Liquid itself featuring one of those guys who's been active here for years, maybe Olli or Wax.

Olli should've really been invited for the Greatest Article discussion in my opinion. Would've made for a less one-sided and more interesting debate. Especially now that Brownbear's article is always used as a shield ("empirical debunking") of Olli's points whenever that comes up, while actually not really doing that (Olli talking about ingame examples, Brownbear purely looking at out-of-game segments, where the problem actually really isn't much of a problem at all). I totally agree that for the last topic about moderation a moderator/admin would be the better person to invite.
Geoff thank you sir. I was a huge fan of state of the game, inside the game, meta, but especially state of the game. i had many great memories of it. I shall watch your new show religiously. although i remember you always clowning artosis for making new shows that didn't last. to his credit, meta did last for more than a few episodes
edit: holy crap the original post was in april. THERES BEEN FOUR MONTHS OF CONTENT THIS WHOLE TIME AND DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT
Thank you Geoff and Dan for the show! Love to watch it. Also in one of the first episodes (correct me if i am not right, might remember it wrong) you said to write here any kind of stuff related to StarCraft that might be showcased on your show. So to put it in a nutshell me and my brother, we've started an instagram account where we are posting different StarCraft highlights (both StarCraft one and two). Trying to make them at least one per day so the content is steadily growing. Making highlights in spare time just to share the love for the game, to rewatch some of the great moments later or to inspire people to watch some games entirely. You can find it here: https://www.instagram.com/starcraft.highlights/ So basically if you find that interesting, we will gladly appreciate if you'll spread the word. Because there are no such thing in instagram besides us, so thats why we've started it. Keep up an awesome show (even if you'll not mention us ). Love the discussions, the topics and the guests! Thank you!

I wanted to watch the part about GSL but then somebody said it takes balls to go proxy rax every game if it has proven to be a totally viable opener. That about equates to saying "holy shit he went in base rax first into CC every game what balls!"

What is cool about RTS games with a vibrant, competitive community is that you get complete revolutions regarding how to think about the game.
Thus, I don't attribute this "takes balls" comment up to the commentator being illogical. I attribute the comment up to... "isn't it really damn cool how many new radically different gameplay techniques have been proven viable in the last year". Should an analyst contradict themselves due to these radical game play innovations.... meh , its no biggie. In fact, its kinda cool.
I just wanted to pop in and say I have been enjoying this show quite a bit.
I think I have caught some of the livestreams before, but I didn't really get into it until recently when I discovered the podcast on Spotify. I work a warehouse job where being able to listen to podcasts and audiobooks are about the only way I can stay sane while working through the tedium.
So thank you inControl and Artosis for putting this together, for just saying "fuck it, lets just do it" and keeping it going. I will likely subscribe on Patreon once I get my finances in decent order to help ensure we make it to ep 100!
Congrats, this is very well deserved. My wife even knows the show knowing nothing about starcraft simply because she is always confused when she hears the animate food questions in the background. Keep up the good memes.
I know it's a dumb internet sappy thing to say but sometimes people (me) have really bad days and hearing people talk about the show in a positive light goes a long way into making that day a bit better.
but geoff you glossed over Maru's historic 3 consecutive wins in GSL this year. you were like: "i believe he's won 3 GSLs in a row now?" with no passion. WHERE IS THE PASSION???????? and then turned it into a discussion about proxying
Wow, this last pylon show had some real talk, holy.... I recommend everyone to watch the recording at least from 0:17 to 1:26 if you dont have the time to listen to start to finish.
I dont have twitter, the youtube video broke the news for me that Geoff and Anna are separating.
Man, I can only imagine how tough that has to be, Incontrol, know that we really appreciate that you re putting in hard work in providing content even in hard times.
Your sense of humor (and in general the way you talk) always was and still is one of my favorite thing about the SC community, dont ever lose it!
Yeah, it really had some real talk, great episode.
I knew about them separating (Twitter), but it was the first time I heard Geoff outright say how much he made on EG back then.
It was never a real secret and most people kinda knew what they made back then, but hearing the figures was still something (Geoff made 6k/month, others on EG 10-15k/month). When you think about what players make today, it really puts things into perspective.
Also Rotti and Neuro are just great guests and I hope we will see them back next week for a discussion about Bronze to GM series, since Neuro is doing one right now and Rotti doesn't think highly of them at all.
Anyway, thanks again to everybody involved in the show, I enjoy it every week!
Holy crap i'm spooked, I literally had thoughts within the last couple months that they were gonna divorce. I'm guessing it's due to insecurities or that Incontrol doesn't really have a stable-enough career to start a family(that's high on the priority list when choosing a partner) or maybe she met someone at twitch? Speculation aside...
@Incontrol-Best of luck, go slay lots of tang and grind lots of ladder. It will eventually just be a blip in the past. A group of really good friends + a therapist will help you through it. Don't be afraid to talk about your feelings with them.

Propably best not to throw speculations into the room, its somewhat of a private thing and think it should stay that way.
This weeks show felt amazing to me, a lot of discussion and jokes that connected.
I do kinda miss the slightly longer "this week of sc" but honestly, it propably shouldnt be something they keep doing every week for a whole freaking hour. So the 10-20 min segment like this week should be best. Maybe put special attention to some events/content that gets more than 1-2 sentences tho,so we got something that stands out. (just being bombarded by 20 tournaments makes my brain just turn off)
This week's episode was the most real and "adult" one I've ever heard...it's sometimes hard to realize personalities have lives and struggles. Bravo to all involved in a very tasteful and poignant ep.
Amazing last episode. Thanks for putting yourselves out there for us, guys. Although you've never met me, I do feel a connection to you all after following your stories so closely over the last 8 years. I'll continue to do so as long as you continue to create content.
Hey Dan/Geoff/Cobra, really great episode. I think it was the best one so far. Been following the scene since SC2 beta and I'm so glad you guys have brought back this type of content. You guys are seriously awesome.
There seems to be a paywall for the pylon show this time (Blizzcon show) - only virtual ticket holders can watch it live. Hope we are going to be able to see it on youtube afterwards Does anyone have a link (legal of course) where it can be seen?

Surprised how short this episode was, with all the downtime i was somehow expecting them to mix it in and hype us up a bit for the semi final show as well as BW. Guess they do have to get ready tho and cant just casually talk til like 10 min before the game starts ^^

Hi all, I have been away from SC2 for a long time (since the end of WoL), but watching WCS and listening to the Pylon Show made me feel like I never left. Thank you for doing this.
Keep it up Geoff, best of luck with the show lad. (I need some "I get what you are saying but you are wrong"-Nony in my life though, so if you can make that happen it'd be grand)

In my eyes, if Serral wins the next big global tournament (IEM Kato or WESG, whichever is first), he's bonjwa even without having won any "preparation style" tournaments. It would be completely unprecedented dominance.
Funnily enough, if Maru had won this blizzcon (which I think would have happened if he got past sOs), we would be having the same conversation but instead about him. Funny how things work out, and really shows how far above the two are above others.

The most improved caster this year is Rapid. There isn't another answer. He isn't an S ranked player, but he has gotten really good; I thoroughly enjoyed FlaSh vs EffOrt.
For me, I thought Incontrol has had a rapid transformation over the past two years as a caster. Incontrol went from an already really good caster to one who seemed to completely master a combination of hype, humor, and analysis and who I absolutely love to listen to now.
Thanks for giving us a great year iNcontroL, Artosis, and everyone else involved in the Pylon show. Been a real treat to have something like this again and I look forward to it every week.
Love what you guys are doing, but Nathanias is just meh for me, so think I'll be skipping this episode. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all of you, anyway.

Don't skip it, you'll miss great entertainment. Nathanias doesn't meme too hard, so it's fine imho.

I feel sc2 prize pool is going to be gutted
How does it feel scary? What you have (on purpose, I assume) left out from your summary, is all the statements like: "this is a big positive" "2019 is going to be amazing" "2019 is going to be better than 2018" "there is nothing to be concerned about at all" "2019 looks very promising and Blizzard is very happy with how Starcraft did this year" "we have a lot to look forward to" "2019 is going to be good, the question mark is HOW good it's going to be"
This is not what Rotti said at all, by the way: "I feel like right now you are almost scaring people and I don't think that's the right idea. We don't know details but we know a lot of good things. Just because we don't know the details doesn't mean that no good things are coming."
You made it sound like they had to hide some bad news, which is absolutely not the case. He didn't even warn Maynard about breaching his NDA. You also put almost everything out of context and misquote the folks on the show.
At this point I have to assume that this is deliberate in order to scare other people on the forum. Shame on you.

This last episode's discussion on the WCS Winter qualifiers regional slots really rubbed me the wrong way. Geoff was arguing there should be less slots for Australia because they aren't good enough compared to the European region, and that WCS should have a threshold for skill level. I don't disagree with the argument, but how can he say this with a straight face when WCS region locks ALL Koreans out? Top Europeans are pretty much at the level of Koreans, so how is this justifiable?

I'm sorry, can you give this context? Without listening to the show yet and just reading your comment it seems like Incontrol is complaining that there's 2 Australians in WCS Winter NA, which is too many because only 32 Europeans can play in WCS Winter EU. And that doesn't sound like it's a real thing that happened.

Yeah that's definitely not it, the whole section was pretty long and more complicated.
Basically it started with ZG and feardragon not liking how WCS NA is this mixed pot where everything gets thrown together and how NA players have even less spots now. They also felt bad for Australia for example because they are just part the Americas now and don't have their own regional competition. So they should get their own thing.
Incontrol thought they meant a smaller WCS just for Australia, but said they don't deserve that because nobody wants to watch the 8th best Australian player while the 8th best EU player is really good, so it makes sense that they have their own thing. They also don't deserve more spots in WCS Americas, 2 is about fine. He also said China is better than Australia and a way more exciting region, so them getting more spots is fair.
But then feardragon and ZG clarified that they also just meant a regional Australia qualifier, online without a huge production and not another WCS event and 2 spots seems fair. They just want the regional competition back, in any form. Right now Australia has no identity and is just part of WCS Americas. Incontrol agreed with that and they basically agreed on everything in the end. There was a lot of confusion during the whole discussion, and some stuff got mixed up with Katowice, but in the end it all got cleared up.
I hope I got this right, gotta watch it yourself maybe .
That definitely makes a lot more sense, thanks Musicus. Although I will say, NA players having "less spots" is not that bad. You know, in a similar manner to "nobody wants to watch the 8th best Australian player", I think having PsiArc or Probe or Gogojoey in WCS Winter NA improves it.

Both Goeff and Artosis several times proved that Murrica > the rest of the world for them. I don't think that's inherently bad(actually I think it's pretty normal all over the world), but when they talk about the global starcraft(and I don't mean GSL ) it's sometimes funny
And c'mon, people with names like Gogojoey should have a wildcard spot. Actually I believe there should be 1 free spot for a person with the most hilarious name! (no offense to Gogojoey, but this nickname always creates a big smile)
Very nice that they had the ESCHAMP guys on the show, they had great knowledge of how IA worked, really made me understand better how it learned, the fact that total autonomous learning may be actually impossible is very interesting. Really worth a watch for everyone interesting in Alphastar.
I think there should be a separate CheeseFest(tm) qualifier, where only cheese is allowed. All games longer than 10 minutes are considered a strike. Three strikes, you're out of the tournament. The CheeseFest(tm) winner gets a hamburger with unlimited toppings, and a wildcard for the next WCS event.

I liked your thoughts on the GSL residency topic. This "foreigners are stealing korean's jobs" supresses important parts of the big picture. Nonetheless there a true aspect to it. I think, what is felt as a problem is the fact that we have very little fluctuation in korean SC2. New blood barely (or not at all?) makes it to Code S Ro32 and never rises beyond. I feel this is due to a lack of incentives for amateur players. It's just so damn unrealistic to achieve anything substantial at all. Very good foreigners qualifying for GSL intensifies this problem. But of course, banning foreigners wouldn't solve it either.
This is why I still think some kind of Code A is needed for Korean SC2. It would have to be smaller than the Code A we had in earlier days because of the now smaller player base but it still could be a cool thing which nourishes the fluctuation and diversity in korean SC2.
Artosis seems like a great guy. It is brutal, however, I'm glad he is seeing these layoffs up close. This gives him time to diversify his income so it comes from sources other than SC2.
Incontrol was very smart to diversify away from SC2 and make himself a "Strategy Game" streamer. I hope Artosis does something similar.
@1 hour and 8 minutes : Incontrol provides ruthless honesty and brutal truth.
Does anyone know what happened to AFKtea? I ordered some and now when I try to go on the site its saying its offline. I ordered from them to support the show two weeks ago with no word since the initial email.
I enjoyed the fan interaction stories. Must be weird to have someone and grab your hair like that. Some people are different I guess. Can't wait for the next one.

Not sure about the site. Showing online now.
AFK Tea shipments had a few delays, One or two flavors sold out faster than they could restock it and then customs held it up for a while. They have refunded 10% additional across the board and shipping (even international shipping as of a few weeks ago). Those orders have gone out, apologies for the delays.
May I propose you guys invite soO with a translator (maybe Olimoley since she's her team manager I think) for the next show?

i think it would be better to just do a translated Q&A and they talk about it.. would probably waste less live time.. and get more content in.
omg please do justice to soos win - when maru did triple gsl win incontrol was so nonchalant about it - please talk about the emotional weight of his victory. this is the most beautiful storyline in sc2, and with blizzards recent layoffs and the future of sc2 in question - this couldn't have come at a better time
If there ever was an opportunity for me to get on the pylon show, this was it! I'll just keep writing soO articles/interviews in preparation for his next championship!
I've been downloading the podcast and listening to it while I drive in the evening (I commute 1h once or twice a week) and it is just great Thanks to all the hosts and the people behind it organizing it, it's great content and awesome personalities talking about the best game.. gg

I really enjoyed this Brood War episode, Artosis and the gang had good chemistry. Really made you appreciate all that these guys do for the foreign BW scene
A little late in posting this but thanks again as always guys. Really appreciate the podcast version so I can listen at work and on the go. I cast a defensive matrix on each of you!
Must be a mistake. Artosis is playing Brood war on stream right now. Sidebar says Pylon show right now but I don't see any Pyon show on Artosis stream. Incontrol isn't streaming at the moment either.

The latest episode was interesting despite all the technical issues. Freakling really gave everyone a glimpse into the madness of the brood war engine.
2nd time watching in 2 years, I've probably watched 1,000 times more SC than I have ever played. It hurts to even sit through a raid in WoW, I can't imagine ever being healthy enough to sit and compete in SC.
Vods should be available on Rotti's Twitch channel (his regular vods are locked behind a sub-wall, but he claimed that Pylon Show vods are publicly available) and will be available on Pylon Show's Youtube channel. Strongly recommended. 1A banter.
Liked the recent one with Rotti and the 3 german power house players Lambo, Heromarine and Showtime. Always nice to know some more of the players that have (almost) always been at the top in Germany!

It's no secret he isn't really involved in SCII much at all anymore beyond exclusively casting GSL. You'll be hard pressed to find any evidence of him paying any attention to Dreamhacks, TSL, KoB, ESL weeklies, or literally anything that's not excluslvely in Korea.
EDIT: This isn't so much a critism as much as it is just me being sad. I wish it wasn't that way and it's very sad that we have come to this recently
The pylon show website claims that there should be a show now, but Rotti is not live and there's no announcement on Twitter. Does anybody know where to find an up-to-date schedule?
