To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

On the one hand I'd like to learn Korean

On the other hand I would be able to tell what the (terrible) nonsensical lyrics the generic kpop songs actually contain. (Like, F(x) pinnochio)

I'd like to think I wouldn't be bothered cause I've never really been into it for the music anyway, and could always hit the mute button. Who knows though...I'm not at that level yet so.
^It's a little gray though. By your standards I wouldn't be classified as speaking Korean (and I agree with that) yet I've gotten to the point where I can recognize certain phrases in songs and in Korean speech and sometimes get the gist of a conversation, so it isn't totally the "I don't know what the fuck is going on here I like dem legzzzzzz" that the poster of the poll is referring to.

double edit- @Kipsate response- if anything the outfit's bagginess when it's clearly meant to be more skintight show how skinny she is, she's crypting hard, which I don't really care about cause she's never been close to my favorite in Rainbow anyway.

Think its the outfit.

Anyway, everything is cooler in korean.
Just like koreans think its cooler to add random eng(rish) to random kpop songs.
I'd say you know the language if you can indeed hold a full conversation with someone, if you can just recognize lyrics or certain phrases then you don't really know the language.

Lyric translations are probably not worth knowing for any song except ballads though anyway.

I don't always want to know the lyrics of what i'm listening, particularly when we talk about pop-music. I know a bit of korean (like the hangul alphabet, romanization, and some words here and there), but I haven't pushed too far yet. Understanding key-words like "saranghae", the occasional english words and the title is often enough to know what the song is talking about anyways. Plus, it might be just me, but I find it less disturbing to listen to a foreign songs when I am playing games like SC2 because I can't pay attention to the lyrics.

Yeah I'm practically on the same boat in regards to the language. I'm slowly learning but I can actually read hangul OK and now my reading speed isn't quite bad either given that I practice just by reading what my Korean friends are saying over chat. When I listen to them speak I'll generally pick up a few things of their conversation every now and then which is really cool and I get stupid excited.

It's sooo fun learning the language though we should practice together! <3

I don't fit in anywhere really, I'm not Korean and don't speak but am learning. I guess I could put don't speak but that's not completely true.

Pretty much this. Every day you pick-up more and more of the lyrics and it's actually pretty rewarding to figure out another "piece of the puzzle".

I did this a lot too, but for some reason if I play with just calm K-pop ballad songs I seem to be a lot more focused on the game. Every time I play ladder I have insane Adrenaline... the songs keep it lower making it a lot easier for me

I usually just have my Itunes in and at some point you are so into the game(SC2 or SCBW) that you won't care what is running right now. Except if its LoL, in which case I can switch very fast and not lose important game time(so to speak).

I play P, so alot of PvPs get intense and micro battles, I feel like the insane adrenaline and heart pumping helps me play faster, but that could just be in my head.

I've recently started listening to TVXQ5 and I'm just blown away. I got into Kpop when TVXQ2 cameback with Keep Your Head Down so I missed out on the glory days. But a friend shot me some links to some live performances and it's just incredible how amazing they were. I've spent the last 2 hours replaying them instead of working. I know they were the kings before the lawsuit, does anyone else really like them?

2nd teaser didn't amaze me, but I thought the 30 second sample from amazon sounded alright. Guess I will just have to wait till the full mv is out.

I searched and couldn't find that anyone posted this. Anywho, SlayersYugioh kept playing this Mighty Mouth song and it's catchy as hell. I know there were other people from his stream looking for it but whenever he showed his music player the title was always in only Korean so I had to do some digging (searching the english lyrics etc). Anyway, here it is:

I always thought they were on a way way different level, by comparison things like Suju or 2pm etc is just a marketing trick, TVXQ were pros. There's just no substitute for real vocal power.

Lee Soo Man's take on venturing into the U.S. Market:

“... Rather than venturing into the U.S., we are just holding a concert as a consolation for the people we consider a part of an imaginary country called SM TOWN. The markets of China and Asia will be bigger than the U.S. market. Thus, it isn’t really necessary to go into the U.S. In the near future, when a ‘Hollywood of Asia’ appears, the cultural center of the world will make a big shift to Asia. Asian songs are not well known in the U.S.? Totally irrelevant because Asia will soon become the center.”

Agree or Disagree?

Personally I agree but that's all beside the point, and also I don't wanna get banned for saying why exactly I believe the USA won't be the center of the world for much longer. Guess unless you're ten years old you should know why people think so anyway.

But back on topic of kpop discussion, I just hope it's not some allkpop mistranslation bullshit, and that he actually follows through on that too, ie that it's not just big talk. If he really thinks this way then that's a huge relief from a soshi fan perspective. Sunny/Hyo on IY2 and now this and things suddenly starting to look real cool again Assuming both are true of course

While I suppose this may hold some truth, the average Asian consumer does not buy as much as the average western consumer(or japanese fella) so it will take quite some while before that happens. and by then the current Idols will be irrelevant, as I don't expect them to last that long(as is the nature of pop music)

As for Boy band whatever, Super Junior's Superman is a pretty good song imo.

I don't play sc2 lol... i just played my placement matches and then now i just watch (pretty much every day) and listen to kpop. tis why even though i lurked here i never posted, but kpop has drawn me into posting :S:S:S

korean sounds nice when sung, but when spoken, sounds like horse shit. the same goes for cantonese. imho mandarin chinese is the one that sounds nice when spoken and sung. korean as a language is not that useful to learn as well, has very little utility compared to something like mandarin. while i am cantonese, i have been meaning to learn mandarin for ages..... just too lazy :D

As for the above post, i disagree. For some reason, most people find the situation as: If i dont understand it, I don't like it, unless its something like danza lucenzo. imho that is pretty much why the asian songs wont succeed, no matter how pretty yoona is.
