To ensure this thread won't be closed, you must adhere to several a number of simple rules;
  • Please use spoilers when quoting a post with pictures and/or videos.
  • When posting large quantities of media (pictures or videos), please begin spoilering after the first piece. Grouping related videos in the same spoilers & labeling is recommended.
  • No reposting of old material unless justified
  • Posting any material with little or no relevent discussion accompanying it
  • No passion-induced flaming of each other because 'x said y sucked' etc.
  • Keep the expression hate of music individuals/groups to a minimal level
  • No 'pagetopping' in any form whatsoever, as it constitutes spam equal to posts similar to 'first'.
  • No vulgar fan fics or wet dream stories. It is creepy, weird, and it dehumanizes the people who you are here to celebrate/discuss.
  • Normal posting standards that you find throughout the rest of the site still apply and will be enforced more strictly from here forward (2012/03/11)

Due to the poor nature of this thread in the past, temporary two-day bans will occur more than often if people slip up.

Girls' Generation and Wonder Girls gave birth to the massive influx of new girl groups, without them you probably wouldn't be watching T-ara, After School, 4Minute, etc. Just in 2011 alone we've seen 27 girl group debuts. I don't know too much about the music industry pre-dbsk but it seems to me like before the creation of SNSD, the market was predominantly male artistes. Some of that credit would have to go to S.E.S.. Fin K.L, baby V.O.X (and maybe BEG since they debuted before snsd/wg/kara) since they were pretty much the first wave.

Gee and Genie was just the icing on the cake =] Had they not had Gee, I'm sure some other song would've done as well in it's place.

and as for the poll... obviously the group w/ the larger fan base will have more annoying people in it T_T I appreciate KPOP for what it is and it's just a fact that there will probably be more sones here than other fan base reps.

... Just my personal experience, albeit biased but it has some first hand credibility

I completely agree with this, ITNW was already an explosive debut peaking at the #10 spot, then you have their next single released GG at #5, and then Kissing You hits #2. They had massive popularity before Gee hit, every single variety TV show tried to get them scheduled. Tiffany probably had a huge impact on their debut too, the instant she showed her smile in the ITNW MV. Every show she appeared on the MC's would ask her to eye smile, it was literally abused on SGB many times.

I get some kind of weird satisfaction when I see someone repost what I've already done. Happened so many times now, but it would be nice to not have to scroll past it. Plus it makes Craton sad, which is bad.

I never said they wouldn't be big, just that they wouldn't be as big. You point out itnw being a "huge success" at number 10, then what do you call miss a's no. 1 rank debut? Plenty of other groups also hit number 1 by their second or third song, and this is after the "girl group rush" so they had more competition as well. There's no denying they were big before gee, but I'd still think that they wouldn't be nearly as big without it.

It's way easier to debut when you don't have to compete with ~30 similar groups for attention.

when the kpop scene was predominately male groups and female fans. no. if not CJSH would have been a huge hit.
~30 groups just mean the market is already opened for them. The groups with the prettiest faces and biggest pockets gets to succeed.

Theres a market yeah, but not for 30 groups...there are many you've probably never heard of, and while there's a market for girl groups in general I'd say the market for new groups is fadin fast, the only successful ones this year are a pink and maybe dal shabet, so while there are more fans out there I'd say it's harder to generate a fandom of your own. A lot of people credit snsds success partially due to variety shows, but if they debuted now compared to then they'd probably have gotten on a lot less- why invite the new kids when getting an established group like snsd or T-ara will be more likely to generate ratings?

Well if they debut today under SM they would still rocket up fast just because groups under the big labels garner so much more attention

SM, JYP, and YG are really impressive to me. They're such well oiled idol machines. But I think being under them alone doesn't really make a group popular. It depends on how well produced and marketed the groups are. SM had a failure in TRAX. JYP failed with San E, but maybe his comeback will do it for him. And I think YG flopped with a girl group before 2ne1. Plus Cube and DSP have big successes without being one of the Big 3's. So it really is just how well produced and marketed a group is that leads them to success.

The song reminds me of Roly Poly in a lot of places, and the auto tune is pretty bad in others.

The reasons in my opinion why SNSD is so popular(not only in Korea) is because of a couple things.

The others paved a good way for them(as in Hallyu stars)
SM has deep pockets, there is a reason why they are part of the big 3.
Their marketing was done very well.
Yoona's acting in a daily drama made SNSD known among the elderly people and people of all ages basically.
They have got 9 members, so there is something for everyone basically, each can have a different image and still appeal to the audience in general. E.G people like the pure innocent type, you have Seohyun, people like the icy type you have Jessica etc. It also helps that they have 2 American-Koreans among them.
Ow yeah, nine members, you only need 1-2 on a variety show, 9 members means ALOT of fcking variety shows(like some guy said, you flip channels and you see them everywhere)
And the image they simply portrayed was popular at the time.

The reasons that A Pink is the only rookie group together with Dal shabet who does something is because.

1. A Pink is supported by A Cube(which is a subsidiary of Cube Entertainment, which has connections to JYP, I think they were part of JYP once) so they have a decent amount of money.
2. A Pink has a fairy image, resemblent of the old Finkl style which is different(if only slightly) from the rest of the groups.
3. CF deals and stuff, marketting which is courtesy of the former 2 aswell.

The only reason Dal shabet is popular imo is that they promote 24/7 and are basically shoving themselves down people's throats.Plus they were one of the ''earlier'' girl group debuts this year so they have alot more time.

Also, there is a disturbing lack of balance in this thread.
