but since we all appreciate the art of StarCraft, doesn't that imply that we don't give much of a damn about graphics and really look straight through the material's soul? Of course it's really hard to do that unless you watch the game over and over again. It's really hard to eat a cake without much icing since the material itself will force itself through your throat. Plus, it's a bit boring without the icing.
Maybe give it time and you'll come to realize that the cake you just ate was full of icing. Because everyone has the same standards for what's icing and what's cake... RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT... Come on, it's fine that you think the movie was just "full of icing" but get off your high-horse. -_- Hype and Stunning Visual Effects (CGI, 3D, IMAX) does not equal great cinema. I cringe every time I read an overly positive review of this movie. I've already lost hope in humanity for many other things but with 90% of the viewers giving this movie a 10/10, you'd naturally wonder what's wrong with the masses? Does Cameron really deserve all this praise? It makes me ashamed of being human. You guys deserve to watch real movies. It's pretty sad how one guy pointed out he was losing IQ while reading my reply. Maybe it was because he just came home from a stunning IMAX 3D visual orgasm experience and everyone who hates this masterpiece are idjits! The irony. WOwow, you are ashamed of being human because a majority of viewers don't share your opinion over a movie they were able to enjoy but you weren't? the fact that most people liked this movie and you didn't doesn't mean there is something wrong with everyone else but you and the minority that are trashing on this movie, and saying that is pretty insulting. plz explain what is so superior and polished about your taste in cinema over everyone elses? i would like to know what movies i am supposed to like. i don't think you or anyone else who didn't like it are "idjits", and i enjoy a good debate (especially about films). i agreee that insults (reference to someone saying their iq was lowered reading your post) are totally uncalled for here, but you are engaging in the same thing by saying there is something "wrong" with those who liked avatar. fans who react poorly to your criticisms do NOT speak for everyone. does someone liking a movie you don't make them a less worthy human than you? that seems to be your implication, and if the answer is yes, i think unfortunately that means you are truly biased in some way that makes debate about avatar a moot point.

It also wasn't the most stunning visual experience I've ever seen, that would have to go to Planet Earth.

meh, i judge a movie by the overall feeling i have after seeing it, not the inconsistencies and flaws i can come up with hours later. and no matter how "unoriginal" or "simple" the movie seemed to others, it doesn't really change the great experience i had while watching it.

Ya this pretty much sums up the majority of the people with negative responses to this film.
Don't get me wrong there's a few genuine criticisms I've read and it's completely fine if you don't like the same thing as me, but most of the people are just getting off making fun of a movie because so many people love it, so yea get off your high-horses. There's more civilized ways to convince yourself that you are "superior to the general population of idiots".

It was more because you felt the need to hypocritically stereotype american films as bad, then go and justify it by saying anyone who likes those films you describe as shallow and plotless are incapable of thinking for themselves.
But keep telling yourself w/e you want to keep that good ole dunning-kruger effect rolling on.

I take offense by movies such as these because they indirectly tell me to become stupid to appreciate it. You guys said the movie would have been worse if it raised questions instead of told you what to think. In what way? People compare this movie with Pocahontas, a family movie, yet even Pocahontas raised more question than this about the same morals and values. How am I supposed to see the other people enjoying the movie as? Simple humans enjoy simple culture (cheap entertainment). And don't give me that argument about sci-fi movies are supposed to dumb things down, that's definitely not the case there. Just because a movie is not about our daily reality doesn't mean it can't be thought-provoking or at least not portray the simple and horribly inaccurate good versus evil. Yes, I was bothered by this even while watching the movie, I also frowned at the dialogues and at the one-dimensional characters a lot. While I was sitting there I was also pondering over why they presented it like a game. You are the main character, you make the choices he does and you see everything from his perspective. You get to choose between the 'good' path and the 'evil' path, but naturally you choose the good one. I'd expect the same shallowness from a new gen FPS/Adventure game but a movie everyone loves? Seriously? The thing that worries me is that people are well-aware of its flaws ("it might not have the best dialogue or plot BUT") yet still rate it sky-high like it was the masterpiece of the decade. How are the visuals even close to enough to make this a genuinely good movie? I'm not telling you guys to become like me, but if it has these huge kind of flaws, why do you keep praising this shit? It is almost 3 hours yet it doesn't offer any character background or development, uses disgusting political messages to make a point ("we'll fight terror with terror!"), repetitive and predictable story, one dimensional characters, embarrassing dialogues and so on. And isn't it sad that the entire moral of the movie assume that you have a humanoid form to identify with - to be able to sympathize with the nature? What if the Na'vis didn't exist and the only thing they had to clear out was those four-legged beasts unable to 'communicate'?

Stop bitching and crying because everyone didn't hate the movie like you guys did.

And to sassme. What kind of research? You don't research movies, you watch them you know... I'm not saying you'll like any of my favorite movies more than Avatar, I'm definitely not saying that anyone should appreciate my movie taste. I'm just saying that Avatar is cheap entertainment for the masses and should not be used with the word 'masterpiece'.

That's your opinion which is entirely subjective.

I havent read a lot of replies that said they hated the movie, just a lot of replies that said they dont understand why people thought this was "the best fucking movie ever" when it seems almost everyone agrees that only the visual aspects were really amazing, and the rest was "not much of a downer" at best.

10/10 can only go to the visual realness of the alternate world. It's testimony to how much money was spend on this money consuming film. It's standard Hollywood formula really. Spend a lot of money on the visual effects, but don't be very risky or creative with the story People will still go watch it to waste time.
|
Not really, that's what the big argument is over: people complaining that the story sucks and is overrated vs people who didn't mind it saying they are being nit-picky and cynical.

@Shauni
Appreciating visuals instead of substance does not mean you're stupid and appreciating substance over visuals definitely doesn't mean you're smart, so quit being so pretentious. They are two totally separate measuring sticks.
Avatar is important because it is visually groundbreaking, and visuals, whether you like it or not, are very important in contemporary cinema.

seriously though shauni is right, avatar is pretty much the modern warfare 2 of cinema
|
seriously though, that's wrong, avatar is pretty much the starcraft of cinema

Comparing inter-active gameplay with cinema is hopeless to begin with. GGTemplar has it right I think, the main debate is between people who dislike the storyline and people who say that shouldnt matter to make the movie a great movie or not (and perhaps a select few who thought the storyline was good).
