Yes, that's what really funny and ironic about such statements. Majority of anime that have finished airing were seasonals too at one point >.> As for most being mediocre or worse, well, it's not like every single currently airing anime will ever appeal to you etc... So long as you're able to find several decent ones to watch, I would say that's a pretty good season. I had 5+ airing anime that I thoroughly enjoyed last season. Well, I haven't watched a single show last season. There are a couple on my ptw but after watching first episodes I doubt any would be more than "just ok" for me. I have also noticed that the general quality of shows might have dropped. Often when they adapt an older show again it feels lacking compared to the old adaption. Kino no Tabi comes to my mind. It wasn't a bad adaption per se but it was so much worse than the original one. I have watched the new episode of LoGH and it was good but it also felt lacking compared to the original. Not really sure what's putting me off exactly yet but the way the MCs are designed and animated is definitely one of the reasons. And the CGI as well. And before that argument is used again, I don't think it's nostalgia. I have only started watching anime as a hobby a few years ago so I have watched a lot of those older shows fairly recent. Just out of curiosity, I went through MAL+ and looked at the time frame 2015-2017 (so last 3 years). I have rated a single show a straight 9/10 (Uchouten s2) which I would consider an absolute gem. That's pretty rough. There are a handful of 8/10s (4, not counting movies) which I would consider gems with reservations. Overall rating of the three seasons (movies included because I'm lazy): 2015=4,5/10; 2016=4,59/10, 2017=5.81.
I checked MAL+ as well and noticed a similar trend for me
+ Show Spoiler +
But I think that it's not a big coincidence that the year I started watching seasonals is also the year that the graph took a significant hit (2014). Before I started watching seasonally, I usually spent quite a bit of time reading reviews and the synopsis before even starting a show to see whether it's going to be worth my time. You cannot really do that with seasonal shows, so it's understandable that you'd end up with way more turds in your list from that point on. It's also interesting that we both had a much better 2017 than the years prior to it.
Whether or not the overall quality of shows has dropped over the last couple years is hard to say. I think it's safe to say that the quantity of truly great shows and movies certainly dropped sharply. My experience when it comes to 9+ shows is similar to yours: I have only rated 1 show with a 9/10 since 2014 and 9 shows with a 9+ before that point in time.
And I can reject that nostalgia accusation as well, because I have watched most of the 9+ shows well after 2014, so it's not like I started losing interest that year.

I will say this season looks a bit sparse.

This season is godlike.

The older an anime is, the more likely it will not survive the test of time, and will be forgotten. How many around here can say they watched 6 different anime from Fall 1982 or something? Typically, history is its own quality control, and old stuff that people do watch are just the cream of the crop of the era. The shitty things will be lost in history, either with no fans to keep the torch burning, or even no way to watch it. In the present, since most people can't see the future, they'll watch a lot of different things, and those things will turn out to be shit. Just how it goes

I was going to say it's mostly selection bias. You don't go out of your way to watch a bad older show or mediocre one but you may watch one that's currently airing due to convenience. If you say watched those old shows as they aired and tracked like that then the data would be more telling.
|
There's also a heavy bias for novelty. Depending on where and what you started watching, it's easy to give more points to things that feel "fresh" to you.

The new DxD designs just feel wrong.

pretty sure it is more similar to the LNs now. also a lot easier to animate.

I think the new DxD designs are all around a huge upgrade for like 95% of the characters.

Idk Rias just looked weird for me. Akeno was good.
And seeing the true way that arc ended was actually hard to watch. Much easier to read it I guess lol.

I finished Overlord S1. Jesus the last 4 episodes were so out of place. I hope S2 isn't anything like it...Actually it might be a while before I dig into S2, it left a very sour taste in my mouth.
